Grandaddy
To my favorite band, the best band ever. When I speak of Grandaddy, I do with a strong overwhelming bias. You end up strangling my throat to make sure I don't speak another word. I do not care what people say to change my opinion. "Grandaddy ripped off O.K. Computer" or "Grandaddy sounds just the Flaming Lips." Some only like a specific albums and dislike the rest, because their style and sound is so variant. I love them all. Each song they play, is filled with harmonious melodies that puts on in a trance, calm as a wind, filling your ear drum with beauty in sound. Pure ecstacy.
It's sad I discovered them later in life. I still remember the first day I listened to Grandaddy, I picked up the album that came out "Sumday." Later that night, I was tripping on 2c-i and I put on the album. For that time, I never heard such beauty, never heard truer words spoken. My entire trip started to wrap around the ecstacy of the sound. That night changed my entire life. Through the whirlwinds of colors, and neon polymeric shapes, I never felt so overwhelmed and touched by any piece of music. It was the day I fell in love with the world and Grandaddy. I still remember the last lyrics in that album, the song "The Final Push To The Sum." Jason Lytle in an operatic voice sings "What have I become....." Those words changed my life.
4 years later, while my lust has cooled down, my passion for Grandaddy lives on. It sounds just as beautiful as the first day I heard it.
And I recommend you all to hear the best band ever!!thcbongman Reviewed by thcbongman on . Grandaddy To my favorite band, the best band ever. Kim You Bore Me To Death, hell yea it's a great song. You'll definitely get into Grandaddy if you like their "B-sides." It's their best works in my opinion. A Pretty Mess By One Band is a damn good album.
There are 3 notable phases of Grandaddy, they started lo-fi, then they started experimenting mixing electronic sound to their music, and then they perfected it into a style they call their own. The best thing about Grandaddy, is they never made a single album in a studio. It was always homemade and their style reflects it. Sound unhampered by pressure of the studio. Unfortunately it was partly why they broke up. Without major label support, they couldn't make enough money.
Arm Of Roger isn't really Grandaddy, it's another band Jason Lytle assisted on some tracks, but no members from Grandaddy actually played in that band.
Since you have A Pretty Mess, I suggest moving on to their "first LP" album Under The Western Freeway. In reality it's actually their 2nd LP, their first LP is called the "Complex Party Come Along Theories" when they were only 3-piece, and much different, pure lo-fi. Anyway, you'll see how much they progressed in just a year. This is when they start heavily experimenting with a more electronic, mixed with folk sound. They walked out with a masterpiece.
To bridge the gap between their next two LPs, get Machines Are Not She EP.
Next you should get The Sophtware Slump. It's simply a great concept album, and won them critical success. However, like all their LPs it's quite a drastic change from one and another. But that's the beauty of Grandaddy, because they retain their style the whole time, but the tone, and themes change from album to album and often get casual fans stuck to liking only a certain album.
Last is my personal favorite which the album cover is my avatar. Through A Frosty Glass EP. It's simply gorgeous.
Also get Sumday if you soaked into their sound and figure this is fucking amazing. And their last LP, Just Like The Fambly Cat is amazing as well. But not as incredible as their era from 1996-2001.
If you like all those above, then I suggest collecting them all! I have 223 recordings of Grandaddy, so there is definitely have a lot of material out there. The sad thing is I haven't been able to find their first EP, Prepare to Bawl. Once I get that, I'll have pretty much everything recorded by Grandaddy with the exception of live shows.
