Why is there a 5 minute time limit to begin with?

I've been to a lot of forums and I've never seen such a thing, so I'm just wondering why impose such a limit?

(I'm not arguing for, or against it, I'm just curious why)

I know the 5 minute edit time has been discussed a million times before... but is there any easy way to change the 5 minute window to where if you go back and click the edit button at 4.5 minutes, you can still sit and edit your post for as long as you keep the window open? Wow that was a windy sentence... Anyway, I understand the point of the 5 minute window, but it is a pain when you are trying to play beat the clock.
