Advice needed from someone who is computer literate.

I have cable internet and am using a wireless router. When I plug the internet directly into my comp it is fast as lightning, but when I use the router, which is only about 15 feet away with a wall between it and my comp, the internet runs slower than dial up sometimes.

It rarely effects download times though and only seems to give me problems when trying to load a page that isn't in my cookies, or after I clean up my cookies a cache folders. I'm having trouble understanding why it rarely seems to effect downloads, but god forbid I try and visit a new site or a link from this site.

I usually have to refresh the browser a few times and the entire process takes about a minute for one page...

I really don't have many other options for where to place the router, it is currently on our coffee table. Is it as simple as moving it. If so I have no idea where to. It is currently right in the middle of either of the two places I use my comp.

Does anyone know what the hell is the matter with it and what I might be able to do in order for it to work as it should?

your router might have a built-in firewall, which could be slowing down the web pages. you would have to find a way to disable it, i would recomend looking through the booklet that came with the router

Wireless sucks man. You're not going to get really good and reliable wireless without expensive pro stuff. Run a wire, they're cheap.

That said, it could be the drivers for your wireless card, it could be the wireless card itself, it could be the router. Try un-installing and then re-installing your wireless driver. Get the latest ones from the manufacturers website.

If that doesn't do it, see if there is a newer firmware for your router from that manufacturers website. If not, find someone else with wireless and get them to come to your place and see if it is slow for them. If it is, it's the router, replace it. If not, it's your wireless card or driver still.

Try a fresh install of windows to make sure wireless drivers are not corrupt if you dare, or try another wireless card. I say re-install first because you may not have access to another card and want to make sure it's not the drivers before you go dump a bunch of money into a new card you may not need.

find the properties of your wireless card, it may be simple as changing it to a different channel much like a cordless phone.

Best thing to do is run a patch from the router to your puter... wireless bites... Sorry I can't help more,,,I have a wireless up to date router but,,, I have run cat5 and outlets to all the rooms I use the computers in all are zippy even with a 40' run...

What is the brand and model # of the router??? are both your puters using the wireless??? if not try it...

i run nothing but wireless routers and have never had problems with them, they DL just as fast as a lan line does, chances are he needs to put his card on a diffrent channel.

I should have specified, I'm using a Mac with the wireless. I have a piece of shit windows laptop plugged directly into the cable modem. I'm not even sure how to change the channle on a Mac. If I still had windows I prob would have been able to fumble around and either completely destroyed it or inadvertantly fixed it. With this damn thing I can't seem to do either...

Thanks for the advice guys. I will try some of that out in a little bit, it is very random though. Right now everything is loading perfectly fine. Other times I can be standing right next to and it wont work...

Now it sounds more like a lagging internet than a router problem... and wired is far superior to wireless,,,sometimes a stupid phone could interfer with a wireless connection...

I don't know mac but if you open a command prompt in the windows wired machine and type ---vvvv---

    ping 72.32.246.221 -l 1460 -t >cdot-ping.txt

You will get a text file in the folder your command prompt is open in C:/Document and Setting/ named cdot-ping.txt that when opened in wordpad looke like this ---vvv---

Notice the consistent pings 50 to 60 MS "Milliseconds" if yours is not consistent and like spikes to hundreds or thousands or shows "Timed Out" on some,,,then you got a problem with your ISP and need to straighten things with them...
