I think there's two reasons it can get you higher...
more smoke at once, and also it gets deeper into your lungs, as the air is pushing it into your lungs. That way the THC gets absorbed quicker and more efficiently.

Those things are freaking awesome, a friend bought it.
I don't like the size though, or the instability.
I prefer my own plastic one, carmelized popcorn tube, and the biggest waterbottle I could fit in it. It works like a charm. And when you buy round bowl peices, the bowl peice will just sit on top of the waterbottle becuase of the spherical suction. No shitty metal/plastic top required.
