You can get in a lot of trouble in NYC for making statements like that ("I'm a racist") in a jury-selection room. I've seen it happen.

I was half-joking. I've served several times, and hate it. I feel that it is an infringement on my freedom. They should have professional jurors, who know the law.

Sometimes the judge will say, "Anybody that does not understand English please stand up.". Naturally, those that do stand are not dismissed.
People have to serve Jury Duty. Thats why its a trial by your peers and not other people who know nothing about your situation. If you were on trial commiting a hate crime against a certaing group of people, would you like that group of people to be in the jury? Probably not.
