    My first time!

    Hi everybody. I'm new here!

I've never grown before. The extent of my green thumb has been watering a few plants, basically... but I'm very much ready to start growing! Unfortunately my wallet isn't, so this is going to be a pretty ghetto setup.

I just planted some bagseed last night in a little cup of soil and mutilated a laundry detergent lid so it could sit on top of it and drain. I've put it in total darkness, but as soon as it sprouts I'm going to move it to something like a 2-litre bottle of soil and give it pretty constant light with two CFLs for two weeks.

I figure on getting a big tupperware tub for a growbox, six CFLs in total, and a fan to make it wobble just a bit, toughen it up!

Here are some very un-exciting photos from day one!

Did you germinate the seed at all before putting it in there? Remember to keep the soil damp but not wet until the thing sprouts.

No, I didn't really do anything. I have an excess of 30+ seeds though, and assuming this sprouts I'll try another...

What is a good technique for germination?

Take a paper towel and fold it into a square and run it under water. Put the seed(s) on the damp paper towel and fold it over again to cover the seed. I put it on a flat dinner plate, with another plate to cover it.
Then put that in a dark place for 3-4 days. Check up on it, make sure the paper towel is still damp (but dont drown the seed), and when the sprouts are 1/2cm, put them into soil.

for a very 1st timer i just place the seed right in the dirt, make it 2 in the same spot for a better chance one comes up, but before that lets fix some things up right quick.

that cup thing there you have dirt in, chuck it out and use a plasic throw away cup instead, make about 6-8 good size holes in the bottom, fill with dirt, place seed 1" into the soil, do not pack soil let it be loose when filling the cup but you can tap the cup to make sure its full.

now water it and wait 3-7 days, water every 3rd day or so making sure the soil is dry, when they sprout place the light about 3-4 inches for the 1st few days then move it to about 2" from the top.

Thanks. I'll give that a whirl.

That's pretty much exactly what I did It's just the bottom of a plastic cheapo cup, about the bottom 2 inches. The soil did get rather compressed when I watered it, though.

For germination, I usually just put mine into a cup of water and it works alright.
