what exactly is hot knifing?

I have some resin here and I want to smoke it because I'm not sure when I, or IF, can get some this weekend. Might be later tonight, might be tomorrow. Might be Monday.... So, I have a bowl I can use it to smoke, or I can use hotknifing. I heard that hotknifing gets you pretty screwed up, but...ya know. Any help appreciated. Rating: 5
