No matter how many times I hear them the nuclear sirens they have here catch me off guard when they test them. I guess thats part of living near a nuke power plant though and there kinda trippy when high so there not all bad I guess they just tend to wake me up sometimes. Anyone else live near a place with these sirens or similar?
I look forward to a day when Nuclear power is not looked at as the only thing we can do for energy needs... Why should we have warning sirens to prvide a service??? that just sounds counter productive...Quote:

They do it on Thursdays here anywhere from 10am-12pm for about 20 minutes. They have to test them in case of emergency by law I guess? They have boxes every couple miles and they can be quite loud.

Ours are tested on the first Wednesday of every month at noon in clear weather. But here they're not just nuke sirens, they're warning sirens that are used pretty frequently in the springtime because I live in the Dallas area, which is part of Tornado Alley. That's why they only test them when it's not cloudy or overcast. We have so many storms in the springtime here that when I hear the siren-testing, I immediately think of tornados instead of nuclear danger.

You really do get used to it. It happens every spring, and there are usually at least one or two serious warnings. It's kind of exciting, really. It's one of the times of year I most miss working for the fire department.
The first time I was in the States I almost shit my pants when they went off. The guys I was with thought that it would be really "funny" to go ape-shit like it was a real 3-minute warning ;)
Plus later that night I saw the emergency broadcast channel (I think that's what you call it) which was being tested or something so that made me jump again.
Nearest we had in Britain was this: Domestic Nuclear Shelters

The sirens on that video sound a lot like ours, but ours are a tad bit more drawn out and they have some women every 10 minutes or so repeating "This is a test, blah blah blah...." I wonder how you get chosen to be the voice on the nuke system?

Yea first Sat. of every month. (Tornado sirens) always gets me.
So if it happens once a week, and you get used to it. How do you know if its real or fake?
They only do it once a month and I imagine they wouldnt have that chick saying "This is just a test".

Yes, we have the Shabbos siren. It sounds like an old "Air Raid" device. The religous Jews sound it off on Fridays twice at sundown, to let their community know that the Sabbath is approaching. It's very loud, and I'm glad that I don't live close to one.

Damn, nuke sirens? That would be scary. We just have tornado sirens here in KCMO. They test them like the first thursday of every month and my dogs go crazy and howl at them.
yeah actually i do... we have sirens for when exxon does their weekly 'release' i don'tw ork there, so i don't quite know what is released... but they're loud as fuck (i live miles upon miles upon miles from them and can still hear them if i don't have the tv on....) and sound about like a nuke siren...
i never understood the purpose of those sirens tho... if you keep testing htem, eventually people are going to get used to them and not pay any attention to them.. so wouldn't that kinda defeat the purpose... i mean imagine a nuclear melt down is happening and for once they blare them in an emergency... what is nearly everyone going to think? lol... "just another test" no one's really going to pay much attention to it...
so i don't get the point in having those sirens if you're going to continually test them and subject the public to hearing them... eventually everyone's gonna get used to them and pay them no mind...
I remember, as a kid (long time ago), they blew those sirens off when they had air-raid drills - and everybody had get off the street. We'd go in stores, or wherever was closest. People with an underground air raid shelter had the best hideouts. Some buildings still say where the shelter is - usually in the basement. There were air-raid civil defense volunteers also, checking the areas out.
They also made us hide under the desks at school - in case the Russians dropped an atomic bomb on us.

Down here around the refinarys and chemical plants in the Deer Park/ Pasadena area of Texas we have a siren test every first thursday of the month, the siren is for chemical leaks
