Sad day. Diagnosed with aneurysm. Think I have to give up weed.
Hello everyone. I am so sad and scared today.
I got an MRI for weird tingling symptoms (I'm kind of a hypochondriac and figured that was what they would tell me) well, lo and behold it showed I have a small 2mm aneurysm in the left middle cerebral artery.
Since the diagnosis, I have been a total wreck. The doc sent me home and I don't even get to consult with a neurosurgeon until March 16th. Apparently no one but me is concerned this thing is going to rupture anytime soon.
This is like a horrible nightmare. I have learned that I should not smoke...so I guess that means I have to give up weed. Hell, I also learned I shouldn't strain too much when taking a crap because that can bust it. So now I am scared to take a crap. Just when I need the weed the most I have to give it up...I'm taking Ativan but I hate pills and it's just not the same :(
I'm tempted to ask the neurosurgeon when I go what he thinks but I won't be able to if my grandmother is there with me cuz she doesn't know I smoke. (I'm 29 but I still pretend to be the perfect little girl.) If she found out I'm a huge pothead, or was :( it would break her heart on top of this aneurysm stuff.

I'm sorry about your situation. What about vaporizing? Same or better effects, but no smoke. Take care and good luck.

First off, that aneurysm hasn't popped yet and it has been there for a while. Chances are you will be OK. Eat brownies (no coughing) and take up some form of meditation. Play quiet music ( music affects how you feel more than most folks realize). I know that the days until you see the doctor will be hard, but you are in no worse straights than you were a week ago. You just know something you didn't know before. Keep calm and try not to bite your nails too much. Hang in there! - Granny:hippy:

So sorry about your news, Tokin. I think Granny gives good advice. She's exactly right that that aneurysm hasn't appeared overnight. It's been there a while, probably all your life. And if it were likely to be life-threatening, they'd have you in the hospital now, sedated.
I've had neurosurgery to fix a venous malformation. It's a lot easier than you might think, actually. Once it's over, you can join the club by saying, "I swear, I'd rather have brain surgery than do ________," and you'll know exactly what you're talking about!

Yeah I think you can still eat cannabis, which is my preferred method. It is much cleaner and more pottent and it last longer. It is just hard to get you valuable herb and make butter out of it. But if done right its hard to even smoke after you know how great eatting cannabis can be. In Amsterdam they were trying to ban space cake(cannabis hand cake) because the tourist would eat one feel nuthin then eat several more and 2 to 3 hours latter they would be so blazed they start to freak out. Somethin to keep in mind when eating cannabis; how much have you ate is your stomach empty? effects take any where from 15min. to 4hrs to kick in. It all depends on how full you are and how much cannabis is consumed. Personaly when my pain hits I like to take small bong tokes(to keep from coughing) then eat a health dose of cannabis. This helps the pain imediatly and the cannabis I eat usualy last about 8-12 hrs. :pimp: :pimp: :S5:

Could you think about humoring of us more traditional medical types and maybe not eat any cannabis either until you've checked with your doctor? Seem like you'd feelbetter being safe than sorry where your neurovascular health is concerned. That's your brain. That's where you live. Why even chance it?

Smoking weed, especially at first, raises pulse rate and blood pressure. When you have a weakness in a vessel--a little balloon like an aneurysm--that's not at all a good thing. Smoking raises the risk of rupture, particularly during the initial, vasocontrictive post-smoking period.
Eating weed is likely safer, which is why the others were recommending that. But Dave, who is a man who deals with blood vessels for a living, wondered if it might not still be minimally risky if, say, the eaten weed were a heavy sativa and caused even some slight risk of some vasoconstriction/raised BP at it was first being digested. The problem with street-bought weed is that no one really knows with real accuracy what strain it is, so unless she's grown it herself and knows it to be a wholly relaxing, vaso-dilating indica, he was simply questioning taking that risk at all. It's a legitimate question to raise.

Wow...you know one of my docs (I haven't seen the neurosurgeon yet) seems to think I might have had this thing for many years. I have been a huge pothead for 15 years. So far, they're telling me it is small. I guess I'm pretty lucky nothing has happened up until now. I am going to the neurosurgeon in a week and I am going to ask him. I'll let you guys know what he says. The funny thing is, I had no aneurysm symptoms and got the MRI because of some weird tingling that is probably unrelated. I heard lots of people have them and don't even know it...I guess I'm lucky, although right now I don't feel like it :( Hopefully he will give me the go ahead to at least eat some weed.
But...is it safe to even ask a US (University of Virginia) doc if weed is OK? Will I get in trouble?

Definitely it's safe to ask. They're not cops, and although many docs aren't up to speed on the fact that weed is not only mostly harmless (except from a heart-vascular standpoint, sadly) but that it's even beneficial, the ones who often tend to know more about it than others are the ones who deal with neurology and psychiatry, interestingly. I guess that's because they've had more in-depth study in the effects of both substances and diseases on the brain. I'm guessing a doctor at an academic/teaching hospital, if that's what yours is, is going to be even more likely to have some knowledge because he'll be more likely to have immediate access to research.
Definitely check it out. And yes, if you read about aneurysms, you'll see that they're not new developments. They form over long periods of time and they're often vascular weaknesses people are born with. Seriously, if you were in any significant danger, they'd have you in the hospital now. The no-straining/no-excitement/no raised BP precautions you're under are just standard procedure. Good luck!
