Just found a hermaphrodite

I was looking at one of my two plants today and it appears that it is a hermaphrodite. It is into its 5th week of flowering and i just found 20-30 male anthers at the bottom of the plant. Many of them have already busted open. I spent the last hour trying to pull off each anther, and now i have quarantined the hermie plant. What should my course of action be now? There is a very good chance that the pollen spread onto the other plant since i keep a fan blowing every day. Are both of my plants completely screwed now? I am thinking about cutting down the hermie tonight and salvaging what buds i can from the plant. Another question i have is concerning pollination. The hermie plant is most likely fertilized, does this mean the entire plant will start producing seeds? Is there a possibilty that only the ovaries that were fertilized will start producing seeds? Please help me, i am in quite the situation right now and i would hate to see it all end like this. Thanks for any help

i believe that if a hermie pollinates itself the seeds produced will al be females so grow it out to maturity and then harvest

Go through and mist everyone well with plain water to make the remaining pollen non-viable.

You'll know in like 2 weeks how bad it is.
But from the first post... and how long it took to get the male flowers off of there... you're gonna be a daddy... BIG time.
But in response to the original Q, yeah only fertilized ovaries will produce seeds.

Next time, spray the flowers down with water before you snip them.

You're talking like this is a big disaster! It's a minor inconvenience at the worst and an opportunity at the best. So you get some seeds. Just take that big mesh strainer and rub the dried bud through that. All the seeds will stay in the strainer and the nicely clean pot will fall through. Yes, you may get a fair number of hermies from the seeds, but you will also get a big bunch of females. Hermie-ism is a great survival trait for the cannabis species. You can use the seeds to take on a "picnic" off in the boonies somewhere, if you are worrying about the dreaded hermies. We old hippies were raised on seeded pot. Sinsemilla was rare! Frankly, I think that at least in part, the seedless pot is favored by dealers because you can NOT renew your supply by just growing out the seeds. Plant your seeds, even if you are never going back to that spot. You may make some kid's day! - Granny:hippy:

I would say it is close to a disaster, or a major disappointment at the least, if you are trying to grow some sinsemilla, so I feel for ya, f'real.

Storm Crow, I have thought the same thing. I never throw away ANY seeds from ANY bud anymore. I will gather them up, and since they are unlabeled, and possibly unreliable...my plan is to disperse them amongst the wild foliage when Spring comes. :D

I would most likely not return to check on them, unless it was from afar (driving by)...but it would be cool for some teen to stumble upon (just thinking if I was the teen, not condoning anything).

lol I have long suspected as much myself.
I have posted this before, but dank bagseeds are truly a gift from the Ganja Gods.
Although I DO hope that anyone who emulates Johnny Appleseed at least goes back and kills males... I'm not gonna get all bent out of shape about the occasional seed.. but if my whole planting got pollinated by an unknown strain, I'd be a bit upset, as I DO make crosses, and it would ruin the season's breeding work if any neghboring plantings interfered.

You mean you DID do crosses, right? :)


I never really thought about dealers growing sinse for that reason, but I guess it'd be one benefit. Alterior motives suck sometimes. Heh.

Banana is the classic trademark of males. Spray down the flowers (open male flowers look like bananas) with water and remove the plant very carefully and kill.
If its a banana growing out of female buds you've got a hermie. They can be saved if you catch them early and search for male flowers and remove them every day.

I would rather find 3-4 seeds in a good sized bag of top-quality medicine than not find any at all or even 1.

That's just me, i guess :)

I know i can take those few seeds and get some sinsemilla later down the road.

Makes me wish every quad or half came with 10 free seeds of the shit.

yeah probably harvest those particular colas would be fine and let the others mature the whole way.
If they're looking like bananas, they've already opened and spilled out their pollen.
If yóu havent got much airflow at that level, they'll really only pollinate the buds beneath them, where they've spilled out and stuck to the sticky resin.
They take a couple of weeks to mature into seed.

i checked the trichomes and they have almost no amber. I already harvested a couple colas last week... you know, so i could have a nice mix of highs. one plant hias anthers almost all the way up the cola. but the seeds seem to be little developed. I'm going to harvest them all tonight and only leave a couple lower buds so i can also harvest some seeds. one plant even smells like cat piss it's so pungent!

I must of been blessed last year when I got some dank weed and found 2 seeds,
1 female and 1 male. I pollinated the female and got some more seeds. then when I harvest my female a couple of weeks ago it was nearly 3 ounces of the most dankiest weed I've ever smelled I almost gagged just smelling some bud!: :smokin:

After trying to remove all of the anthers i realized it was going to be a long process. I ended up removing the bottom 4 branches since all the male flowers seemed to be concentrated on the bottom of the plant. Was that a bad idea? Plant seems to be doing fine and i have not found any more anthers (i removed the branches 4 days ago.)

You'll have to continue looking every day until you harvest. You'll probably find one or two every other day on one plant. Make sure you get them before they open and become bananas. If they're half open, spray with water and snip and remove slowly and gently.
