my mom says the reason why i cough is because i smoke. and she says i cant smoke because i got asthma. but i get the same cough every year, i think shes just looking for an excuse for me not to smoke. the cough and drainage is all in my head its not the chest at all. i live in memphis and the weather here changes pretty much everyday and i think that has a lot to do with it because it always makes my sinuses act up.
does anybody have this same problem??
is she right or is she wrong?

I had really bad asthma as a child. I eventually grew out of it and haven't had an attack in about 7 years. I smoke a pack of ciggs a day and a few bowls of weed a day... You know your body better than she does. I also know from experience, you can feel an attack coming on ahead of time.
My point is, I've been smoking in one form or another for 4 years now and have never had any real problems. It has the potential to be dangerous, but hasn't affected me.
I don't have smokers cough, but I do wake up with a shit load of phlem in morning. I think that is mostly the ciggs though. If your chest isn't hurting and you aren't having trouble breathing, I think you are fine.

Cheefa, just because there are good strains for asthma doesn't mean they work beneficially for everyone. The sad thing about asthma is that THC and the other cannabinoids are great bronchodilators and have some marvelous anti-inflammatory effect, but all the other crap that's in weed smoke can still be very irritating to many people's lungs. You'll often get the "Nah, it's just fine" answer here. But I have fairly bad ashtma, and weed made mine worse. If I'd kept up using it, I'd have had to switch to eating or vaping it.
If you begin pointing your mom to, say, Erowid or NORML or other places where she can find solid information about cannabis health benefits, she's also going to find an equal amount of warnings that inhaled cannabis smoke is an irritant and can aggravate pulmonary conditions like asthma, also increasing your risk for bronchitis and/or pneumonia. So just be aware that for every reason supporting its use, there's an equal amount of reasons against it out there.
I cough and wheeze this time of year because of allergies, which do a far worse number on me than weed ever did. If you've got a runny nose and drainage in your head, that certainly does sound a lot more like allergies than asthma to me. This time of year, those are classic allergy symptoms, especially in the South (I live in Texas).

I take daily asthma medication. I have 2 inhalers, 1 for control, the other for attacks. I smoke 1/4 a week. My asthma was so bad as a child I spent nearly every holiday in the hsopital at least one time.
I will go on the record and say marijuana does not affect my asthma one bit. Cigarrette smoke on the other hand will mess with my lungs for a week. I starting running every day around the same time that I started smoking heavily, and my asthma problems pretty much disappeared.
My asthmas only kicks in when I used to smoke cigs. But marijuana on the other hand doesn't even affect my asthma or breathing at all. Good thing my doctor got me on medical marijuana or else I'll still be smoking and wheezing myself to death on those shitty ass cigs. I'm not trying to offend any tobacco lovers but thats just the fact.
You also said that marijuana doesn't affect you and that the weather over there might be the cause of it. The only way to surely find out is to come to sunny California (where the weather is more stable and nice) roll up a joint and spark that baby up. Then give us answer when you are finish.

But honestly I think it's different for everyone, you know how you feel after smoking better than anyone.
I had asthma as a kid but I outgrow it, never smoked until about 2 or more years after I outgrow it. I smoke cigs (about 5 cigs a day) and about a joint a day and I've had no sign of my asthma coming back.
I have a light cough, but it's a cough I've had forever.

I have asthma... Asthma flare-ups have gotten more frequent since I've started smoking pot, like, wheezing after walking up a great big hill, but it's not a big deal. A cup of tea or something with caffine with calm it down right away.
And if I wheeze when I'm smoking, I just chill for a minute, then take smaller hits. Or vape with a lightbulb. It's totally managable, and the little bit of wheezing that it causes nowhere near outweighs the joys of smoking pot. I still weight-train, row, canoe, play DDR...all those good things. You'll be okay. :D
