The Shed-Log!

Hello all! Welcome to the shed-log! Going to take you through how we made our shed then continue this thread and use it as the Grow Log.

After just moving house needed somewhere new to grow. The only space available was a shed! Grr. I hate sheds. But its all we had so weâ??ve had to make the best of it. This is what we did!

As you can see in pic one it was full of stuff that took a good few days to remove. Once clean we decided to insulate the shed as best we could.

We fixed mdf on to the inside frame to make a 2inch gap going around the hole shed we then tightly filled the cavities with straw as shown below and sealed all joins with gaffer tape! We then fixed alloy sheeting to all of the walls and ceiling and sealed with gaffer tape. Then 1cm thick anti detection film was placed on the ceiling and stapled around the joints. Then we coated the ceiling with white reflective material and yet again gaffer taped around everything! We then placed a ground sheet on the floor and carpeted the hole shed. Now The gear we installed!

We decided to install a hydro garden grow tent with in the shed for many reasons these being a more manageable area to control and monitor and it also creates another layer of space between the tent and the roof of the shed making it less easy to detect.

We installed a parabolic reflector which for this environment is ideal. The reflector maybe broad and the lamp may be vertical but in a grow tent the light is so concentrated due to the size of the tent itâ??s the most efficient and effective reflector to use as it concentrates all light down! None escapes.

The ballast used is a 600w duel light combo meaning a metal halide bulb can be used in veg and a hps can be used in bloom in the same ballast!

We used a ruc fan as you can see. The main aim was to keep the air flowing as straight as possible so the fan pulls air efficiently. We did this by using a washing bowl on the out let so we didnâ??t have to bend the outlet pipe to a right angle and there for loose a lot of pressure!

We hooked up a environmental control unit that monitors temperature and independently controls the fan and heater! Meaning the tents always at the right temp 24/7.

We bought a cheep container from B&Q which is used for storing water. We installed a air pump with-in the container and attached a length of rubber pipe with small holes in to keep the water aerated! We then add nuts and ph up down ect.. This saves time and theres less chance of the solution being the wrong ph, ec etc..

Air intake is from a vent made from a large 2 peaces of mdf. One on the out side of the shed with the vent at the top, the other on the inside of the shed with the vent at the bottom. This stops light escaping and it stops people seeing in!

We also installed a in expensive dehumidifier to the room on a humidistat.

Just under 1 week in! Currently under 2 125w envirolights attached horizontally to the parabolic reflector via some zip-ties - the 600w will go on in a week or 2! :)

SWEET SPOT!!! I love the space. I can see a jungle in there!

arrr there is! well there’s a few ways.. ones very expensive and involves buying a thermo camera, which im not doing! however the others very easy.. its winter so there’s been loads of frosts, the room is a nice 25 inside. The forst doesn’t melt - or to be more precise it does but at the same rate as other sheds and houses around it. This proves it works.

im sure the anti detection film does work but i think its the combination of the straw cavity, wooden walls, anti detection film and alloy sheeting that contribute to the hole effect.

would a chopper with thermal imaging be able to pick up the heat coming from the extraction fan exit point being 25 inside and freezing out side?

yeap! iv been tying to think of away to cool the heat down with out buying a air cooler.. i was thinking of some kind of water immersed pipe? any1 got any ideas? :)

Is the shed on a slab or have raised wooden floor? if wooden floor you might be able to run it under the shed.

that is obe hell of a grow room, if it was me i would 100% seal it off and add CO2 to get the most out of that shed.

its raised but then surely the heat would just bellow out the sides?

Wouldnt be as affective as a air cooler but would disperse the heat a lot lot more evenly than shooting out the side i would think, but maybe there is some better solution i dunno man, maybe some water or gel filled pipe like you said on the market that will reduce the temps. i have same problem here but have a concrete slab floor, and havent come up with anything as yet, i get a lot of choppers around so kinda freaks me out a bit.

what is your roofing material? Why I ask is that infrared imaging equipment reads the emitted temperature of surfaces. Some materials emit close to 100% of their IR radiation, other materials emit almost none! A shed with a aluminized roof would show cold even if it's actual temp was warm as it reflects the radiation of the sky (really cold, even in the summer, a clear sky reads below zero F.)

What about running an exhaust hose underground or on the ground somehow and running it away from the shed, to exhaust somewhere else. Hell, have a heat source coming out of a hole in the middle of the back yard, or whatever. Or maybe run it up to next to your outside A/C unit or something.

Just an idea. Obviously, you would have to increase the size of your fan (strength) to compensate for the added distance, but it would remove the heat away from the shed, and also allow for it to cool down while [underground].

I began to read the posts about the infrared detection and I jumped in with both feet in my mouth. (I was tokin' up, getting ready to go swimming in the pool)

I am a professional thermographer, so I can answer your questions and come up with reasonable solutions for you, If I use my fuckin' head. <G>

I'm headed out the door again so I don't have much time right now. But I'll get back to this discussion later. Meanwhile, keep in mind:

1) Thermographic cameras and detectors can be "fooled". As I said, emmisivity is the key. (a stainless or aluminaumstack and chinaman hat will show much cooler than actual temp.)
2) Hot air has no emissivity, it can not be detected with infrared sensors. Just the plastic damper/louver will appear hot.

The same treatment that was applied to the walls was applied to the sealing. so that straw, chipbord, alloy sheeting then a 1cm think anti detection film followed by white reflective material. Then.. not forgetting the layer of air and space between the shed and the grow tent within the shed. its the out let air thats the problem.. its like i need some kind of cooling element to go with in the outlet pipe.. :)

yea fog! iv been thinking alone the same lines but your right the fan would have to work harder. if the worst comes to the worst it might have to be done.

Right iv started looking into designing some sort of attachment that slots on to on outlet fan that cools used air from the grow room.. just going to start by Scouring the net for ideas! :)

I dont know why ur so suprised, here where i live 90% of people are cought from infared/choppers,The cops did a big operation raided 17 houses all with hydro under lights some small as a closet set up in side a house and some up to 2 bedrooms full. So if you are doing a serius grow room, like tom here, why not make it as undectectable as possible.

But its illegal to scan a house or property in the US with out a warrant - invasion of privacy. The Cops would of had other leads.. This all ties in with my thread about saving electricity.. Donâ??t give any1 any evidence your growing. peace of mind.

Tom, i'm giving you the straight shit, man. Just vent the warm air through stainless or aluminized duct with a "Chinese hat" (the a funnel shaped cap for a vent stack. The metalic duct (stack) will not show the heat as they are are not good emitters of IR radiation. The warm as is also invisible to the IR cameras as long as it isn't vented right against the side of your shed (like a dryer vent).
