SACRIFICE Troop cradled grenade to save others
Union Leader ^ | 12/07/04 | TONY PERRY and RICHARD MORRIS, LA Times
SAN DIEGO ?? Sgt. Rafael Peralta is dead, but the story of his sacrifice to save fellow Marines will live long in Marine Corps lore.
In the fierce battle for the Iraqi town of Fallujah, Peralta, with gunshot wounds to his head and body, reached out and grabbed a grenade hurled by an insurgent, cradling it to his body to save others from the blast.
The explosion in the back room of a house injured one Marine, but four others managed to scramble to safety.
Peralta, 25, an immigrant from Mexico who enlisted the day he got his green-card work permit, was declared dead en route to a field hospital.

??He saved the life of my son and every Marine in that room,? Morrison said in a phone call from Seattle. ??I just know one thing: God has a special place in heaven for Sgt. Peralta.?
Similar gratitude was expressed by family members of other Marines in Peralta??s unit who were close to the blast. The unit was Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
[snip]
Rafael Peralta had not been assigned to the Nov. 15 attack on Fallujah. Still, he volunteered.
[snip]
In the hours after the battle, Marines spoke quietly of Peralta??s heroism.
??You??re still here, don??t forget that,? Lance Cpl. Richard A. Mason told Kaemmerer. ??Tell your kids, your grandkids, what Sgt. Peralta did for you and other Marines today.?

Invading iraq doesnt protect your freedom

Very good point crack baby. That points out the naivety of crusaders like Torog quite well.

Yeah invading Iraq doesn't protect our freedom really, but that Sgt is still a hero. That is an ultimate sacrifice for your friends!

You finally made a post that didn't cause me to start vomiting after the first few sentences. Go marine.

i feel sorrow for him and his family, even though i disagree with the war in iraq it in no way diminishes the respect i give to the military men and women who sacrafice their lives for their fellow soilders and the country that sent them into war.

Dying in a foriegn country that you have no right to be in is not in my opinion a noble death , in fact I believe there are only two types of heroes Dumb and Dead.
I would feel more sympathy for the devil simply because America reeps what it sows and then tries to justify it like they are on a crusade to wipe out the evil of the world , the US gov is the evil in this world.
America has been the most aggresive nation for the last 60 years , undermining foriegn goverments even when they were elected and helping dictators as long as it served US interests (Pinochet , Chile) .
The waste of US soldiers to protect corporate and goverment ideals is ridiculous and insane , take a good look at who stands to gain the most from the war in Iraq , US companies securing contracts for the rebuilding of Iraq , a puppet goverment sympathetic to the US and open to the idea of consumerism.
If I was a glazier and I instructed someone to break some windows to drum up trade would that be right?????
