So much anger in this music forum...can't we just get along?
hey all,
I have recently discovered this Music forum here, and I can't help but notice in every thread, you get someone who doesn't like a certain band, puts them down, then it starts a tidal wave of shit. How about instead of bickering like children, you either don't reply to a thread of music you don't like, or at least give a reason why you don't like them.
Saying, "oh they're nu-metal and complete crap" fair enough, but at least back that up by saying why you think so. All it does is it makes people mad. If you don't like it, then don't respond.
It's so simple, so can we grow up. :)

i wont put a band down w/o explaining my reasons for doing so, but thats just me.

Anyone that refuses to appreciate all forms of music doesn't deserve to pass judgement on it.

Appreciating all forms of music doesn't mean that you think everything is good. There is crap music in every genre. What makes good music? First of all passion/soul. An artist with passion is the kind of person who would be continously working on making their music better or atleast, expanding their horizons. If you take a look at some one like Miles Davis who was always trying new ideas, playing with different musicians, and actually trying to create something new and exciting, then look at an artist like Weezer who was stale from the beginning, and basically recorded the same record five times, it's obvious that Weezer just didn't have what Miles had.
Now those are just examples, but the idea applies to all music. When I say something is crap, it's because it is. I never will say that with out giving the artist a chance first, but when you listen to music, you have to ask why? What was the point of this? Where is the substance?

LOL.
You seem to think that what you say goes huh?
I'm reminded of the phrase "one man's trash is another man's treasure."
I know a few people like you though, that seem to think whatever music they like is the best...lol they can be hard to tolerate sometimes...

My first job was at a local music store called Music Madness in Watsonville, Ca.
I worked there 3 years and found myself pretty eclectic (Spelled right) anyway I was amazed people would be buying a cd and knowing that there was similar style in other bands thinking the person might like it they'd pfft me and say that band sucked etc, I really feel bad for people who can't listen to ANY music and find the good in it. Love it all, and usually people say "except country" but ya know. I grew up on West Coast rap, too short eazy e dre e-40 djquik etc. So breaking my shell into rock, classical, love it, country.. Damn Hank where ya at when I neeed ya! All music has its uses and its when you're in the mood,
another example. composing music myself pretty much full time, I'll get an artist who is in my studio sampling some of my styles. They'll hear a style that I think they like but totally dont, then I'll get a sense of what they like, its so wierd alot of artists do the same thing, they separate themselves from all other music but what they're into. In closing keep an open mind guys. Doesn't mean you gotta go buy that music but getting some stuff you don't normally soak yourself in is a very good thing for personal growth.

Lets do it this way. Remove every single label, every single term, every single genre, every single category, every single social group, whether or not the band is 'successful', whether or not the band is innovative, and leave it all down to: do you enjoy listening to them or not?
For me who gives a damn if the Beatles are 'great' and 'innovative' i don't dig them, and so therefor fuck em. I mean, they definitely have good songs, it's just an example that being successfully has nothing to do with if you actually dig the band.
Some people dig slipknot, more power too em if they don't get annoyed by assholes like me who think slipknot is utter garbage.
Appreciate all forms of music? fuck that. Rap is utter garbage, I'm down for some old school hip-hop, but fuck that new shit, its terrible.

This isn't hate, i don't hate people for what they listen too, you can find me ballin' to ludicrous if I'm in good company. I don't hate people over the internet that listen to mudvane or w/e, but that band is still el terrible, Spanish for terrible.

The way I see it, as long as music has a fan base, no matter how big, it's deserved of a little respect. It's obviously impossible to like everything you hear, but to say that a style or genre is music is 'crap' is just arrogance and ignorance. If it's so crap, get your ass in gear and make something spectacular that EVERYONE will like.
Oh wait, you can't, so shut up.
PS: I hate RnB with a passion.

fuck yeah I'm arrogant and thats the beauty of it. When i say rap is crap, it means i don't enjoy listening to it, and so why give it respect? who the fuck says i have to give it respect? See this is what i am trying to get across. Theres people who go with the mainstream of society, that don't do things that are frowned upon. Fuck those people. I am going to do what I please regardless of what other people think. Its all about perception. In America we see people that are fat as being a problem, who the fuck says it has to be? There are people that think people from Iraq are terrible people for what they do to there country, we have no say in what they think, we aren't the makers of all law. Good and Evil is not real, it is only made up by society. Fuck that.
With that said I'm not going to go around killing people, cause thats not what i want. In my eyes thats a terrible thing, in others its not.
With all this said, fuck rap. You cant spell crap without rap!

As far as making music, i do. I've been playing music for the past 10 years. I have my own home studio. The thing thats different is, i make music that i like, and dont give a damn if its a success. I make music that i feel like making. Some days ill throw down some folk, others ill go all synth and throw down some flaming lips type shit, its just whatever im feelin.
I am moving to nashville for a recording engineering school. You might think how are you going to handle recording songs for people in genres you dont like. Easy, its not like shitty music is so intallerable. Also with my part in it, i might even be able to help improve the artist. who knows.

Something has a fan base so it deserves respect? So what has Britney Spears ever done to deserve my respect? She has never written a song, or sung in tune. She's a burden to humanity, and I see no reason to respect her.
Bands like Panic at the Disco and the Killers, why should I have any respect for them? They were put together by the same people who brought you such insulting acts like the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync. They've never done anything new or interesting, they just feed off the ignorance of the middle class. They're lying to you, the entire business, feeding you the same garbage they always have, and you're paying them to do it. Why can they do this? Because most people don't care about music as an art, it's just entertainment to them. Most people couldn't hear the difference between a terrible guitarist and complete brilliance. They just like what's familiar, and that's fine for some.

im diggin those tunes you got on your myspace sonicbloom. The horns and drum beat are kick'n on Oh savier rough. Kind of reminds me of Calexico. Nice influences too. Keep making music.

yea, it does sound a bit like Calexico.
It sounds like a lot of things, Modest Mouse, Bright Eyes, Jail, Grandaddy, Built To Spill to name a few. At the same time it sounds polar opposite of them. That's a hard feat for most bands, to balance your own creation without sounding too much like a singular influence. I gave it a 2nd listen, and it sounds more pleasureable than my first listen, hearing subtle sounds I didn't hear before. This is really good stuff.
If you don't mind me asking, when you finish with an EP, demo, something like that, is there anyway I can get a copy?

Some good points sonic bloom. We share that same stance on manufactured popular music. The way I see it is music is music. For every shitty Britney or backstreet boys track there was at least a creative musical mind that wrote it in the first place. It's easy to stick the semi-decent voice of a retard over any old track, dress them in as little as possible and stick them on MTV to mooch off the narrow minded culture that crave superiority. Justin Timberlake may be an irritating, pretty boy cheese muffin but i'd be happy to listen to the majority of his instrumentals had he not already ruined them for me with his incessant voice. Nahsayin? :p
I'm stoned and tend to drift in and out of the 'hopeless commercialisation' theory  .
EDIT: Agreed. Good tracks man.

This is in fact why alot of home studio producers do their thing. Fed up with the corporate garbage we're fed as if thats what we're into. So lemme make a point..
I've also been in the industry for a number of years. I'm not huge and people I produce for aren't either, I really don't care about that. On a major label.. The mainstream is the target. On an indi label. One can have just as much success "getting music out" as a major label. I myself have grown to despise the rap thats being put out, but that doesn't mean "rap" is crap. Just the rap that you're listennig to.. Remember when it was the shit?? Well we were probably about teen age when we were most brainwashable. The music coming out now is tailored to todays teens.
I support the non main music movement, but really in every industry, there are people like us, home power users but really. Our music doesn't spread like wildfire from overplaying on the radio, multiple hudreds of thousands of downloads, hits, leads etc. That generates interest. So you gotta at least turn your eye and don't say anything at all, or give em a golf clap for going through the bullshit you know we go through if you work with artists and distribution companies, marketing, shows, merchandise etc etc.. Sure you can hate but usually those that do, aren't doing something EVERYDAY to achieve a goal and ultimately are pretty worthless to themselves. We all dance to the beat of our own drum, trick is to say everything sounds good, cause then it gets better, if you don't like whats out in the waves, change the station, or burn a cd of your original hits and bump em down the street for all to hear. Thats always fun. So rep Pro.G man. Promote self empowerment and being different cause thats what we're really not wanting, the same ol garbage. Industry's changing, help it to.. Otherwise, we waste our breath. OPEN MIND please... It can't hurt..

I'm glad that my posts were taken the right way, I thought it sounded a bit harsh, but I can't help but get passionate over music.
Thanks for all the nice words about the music too. There will be a new song up hopefully tonight. It's a trumpet and piano piece, I wanted to write something in the vain of jazz impressionism like later Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. It's a really rough recording, even the playing is sketchy, but I think that adds more to the vein of the style really. Plus, the pianist and trumpeter (I know that's weird, but that's the correct word) were sight reading it.

It will be for sale or download when it's finished. Probably through Myspace, CDbaby.com, shows and whoever else I can get to sell it. There are a few songs I'll be recording for charity too. Add me on myspace, it's updated fairly often.
