american history x

ok... before i say this just let me say, i'm not racist or anything... so it doesn't pertain to that exact aspect....

you know after watching this movie again, now that i'm older... (i first saw it when i was all of 15 or so..) i realize just how much it pertains to my life....

i look at derek.. and i see me.... then i look at danny, and i see my brother (the one who's alive, and who wanted to join the army and is now, i don't even know where, last i heard he was moving to TN.. but i don't even know if he made it)

derek 'grew up' and changed.. but there he is... looking at his younger brother.. makign the same mistakes he did.... and somewhere, he knows there's not a whole lot he can do about it... he can talk to him, and try to show him the mistakes... but ultimately danny's path is already paved.. because derek wasn't there to intervene early enough...

that's how i feel... that's like a mirror image.. i'm sitting here.. and i'm seeing the same mistakes (well not the exact same ones, but ones of the equal magnitude) and wanting him to change it, before he ends up like danny does in the movie... at the same time i see a great person, but i also see the pain that's about to come... i see i'm becoming a 'great' person.. (morally wise anyways... but i can also see i have alot mor epain instore for my life...)

can anyone else relate to this movie in that way? or does everyone else just see some great movie without any real meaning towards their life?

i've fucked up alot, but now i'm working hard to correct my mistakes.. and change who i am... i'm just curious i guess.. if i'm the only one out there (i know i'm not, but it'd probably help to know i'm not the only one going through it.... as in personally... you can look at the stars and know someone else is bound to be doing it, but it's diffrent when you actually know they are..)

I feel like it has to do with my life because it deals with hate. Who doesn't have hate in their life?

That movie dosen't affect me in that way. It affects in another....

When I lived in Boston, I got severly beat up by 5 skins....I ended up getting on the T with one pant leg tore completely off, a broken collarbone, a broken nose and those blood spots in both eyes. I ended up at my friends house in Roxbury and sat on their couch for the next 6 hours motionless. The worse ass beating of my life.

I never got to repay them.....I wanted to get the one that spearheaded it, but he went to jail soon there after for beating up a 56 year old black man...Fuckin misguided pussies

like i said, in that aspect, it has nothing to do with me....

just watching your younger sibling making the same mistakes you've made, and you knowing you're older and changing, wanting ot offer guidance... but that guidance is never taken seriously... except for the last fleeting moments of said life....

i hate racists... black brown white... a skin color is the worst thing to hate someone over (religion coming in a close second) those people can't control their color... they can however control their actions...

as an example, skinheads seem to think every black person (and imigrant, if you're not white they hav ea problem with you) follows the same path... but they never seem to realize (for some odd reason) that just because someone's white, doesn't mean they're all racists and biggots...

most of them (sadly) are raised that way... parents, older siblings, other strong influences in their life.. they grow up only knowing the hate...

anyways, i never ment this to take on the racial thing which is why that first statment was there in the first place....

again, i just mean:

Oo and i don't really see the movie relating to me in anyway. And plus i'm the younger of 2 so never had to be a "Big Brother" and set a good example or nothin.

my little brother is like my twin only with a worse path, he started the same shit i did when i was his age (mostly weed) but then quickly and I mean QUICKLY moved onto hard shit within 6 months. I literally watched him become a drug addict while I was working on improving my life but could do nothing but talk to him. Luckily tho hes in a rehab program and wants to turn his life around.

i can definitly see how that movie pretains to that situation. i feel ya.

atleast someone does.. it feels better knowing i'm not the only one (although, that's kidna shitty thing to feel good about "ahah! my life's not the only one that sucks" :p)

I hate anything racist. Im from germany...which im proud of. but when i tell someone that they make some kinda nazi/hitler joke. Shit like that pisses me off. I hate when ppl use racial (sp?) slurs..even if its not in a negaive way. Like "man..my eyes are hella chinky" (i hear that ALL the time) and im like "you shouldnt say shit like that...do you even know what chink means?" "no" "its a racial (sp?) slur that refers to chinese slaves"

American History X is a great movie though. I'm not racist either, but that movie doesn't deal with people who are into that sort of thing. In the end, Derek leaves the lifestyle and potrays how distructive hatred and racism can be. I think it's suppose to show people, "hey, don't get into this. It's nothing but hatred" and it is. Nazi followers are filled with nothing but hate, and that can eat you up after awhile.

In my life, I don't see the reflection. My brother is now a mega religious nut, and myself, anything about religion angers me. I hate every aspect of it, so does my mother growing up in a hypocritical Catholic household filled with a drunken father who abused them to no end, but we are family, and my brother knows not to talk about it around us or he will get an earful from me.

I enjoyed the film. The cinematography was great and Norton just proves why he is one of the most actors of his generation.

I didn't stomp him. Some angry African American dudes did, and I just watched the show, but yes, it was fucked up. I wasn't about to get in the middle of it though.

I used to work with a guy who was into Hitler, and he overheard me saying I immigrated from Holland. He said that me and my entire family should have been shot as soon as we crossed the boarder, so if I had to chance to do the same to him as I witnessed what happened to another Nazi, I wouldn't hesistate for a second. :thumbsup:

I can't believe someone said that about you coming from Holland though. Considering what that dude said I can understand your feelings towards the other guy that got beat :)

I could never stomp anyone with my feet while they're on the ground. Not even for a reason. Stomping is hardcore stuff, and I couldn't do that. Fists, yes, but not feet.

This guy was a very angry person, very. He was consumed by racism and pure hate. It was frightening to watch sometimes him go off using harsh derogetory terms like that. He said something similair to a Jewish fellow as he did to me. He wasn't so lucky that time and got a broomstick upside the head. :p

To them, an immigrant is an immigrant. Kind of sad to see to tell you the truth, and after I saw American H.X, I saw that same fellow, exact same person as the character Derek. I hoped we had evolved since then, but it is still present.

the way you describe the dude he's not derek... he'd more be like stacy keach (but one that actually does something) or the fat dude...

derek even as his racist self is organized and mythodical.... not just hating to hate (which is what the dude you describe sounds like)

Lets just say he WAS Hitler. Same haircut, same beliefs, and I even caught him ranting to himself and did the salute with his hand. :rolleyes:...but the weird thing is, is this guy would go tanning on the time, and he was the darkest white boy out of all of us! He looked like a carrot actually. :p

There was something more wrong with him though. His brain didn't work like ours, and I think he is a bit confused as to what he is believing in.

All I know is that I never have to see him again as he's probably at the same job, picking boxes off a shelf. Plus he's a province away.

racism is a joke. i always say "to each his own", but if you burn a cross on one of my black friend's front lawn, ill come get ya and beat you down.

this movie really isnt like my life at all. the only time ive ever had a problem with skinheads was once when i was a a park with three of my friends (one was black) and my friend threw a ciggarette butt on the grass. two skinheads walked by and one called my friend a nigger and said he was ruining the park. my friend spoke back and then there was a short fight, they ran away like bitches. it was pretty funny.

On the racial topic, I hear a LOT about race daily. I'm in an interracial relationship but to be honest, no one really gives a shit and I like it that way. When I first got into it my mother sat me down and gave me a lecture and a warning that "some" people may not like us and may try to attack us or some shit. I was basically like "he's 180 lbs of muscle and I can claw out eyeballs."

I hate that people even MIGHT look at our race before they look at our love.
