Imagine, if you will, a presidential candidate hiring David Duke to work the Internet for him or her. Mr. Duke, an avowed anti-black, anti-Jewish provocateur, spews out hate pretty much everywhere he goes. Recently, he showed up in Iran to deny the Holocaust.

Any American politician who associated with the likes of Duke would be finished immediately; there's no question about that.

Yet former Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards apparently felt comfortable hiring two anti-Christian bloggers named Amanda Marcotte and Melissa McEwan to work on his campaign. Both women have a far-left, bomb-throwing history that was vividly illustrated on their respective Internet sites.

But let's give Edwards the benefit of the doubt because he's a busy guy. Let's say he wasn't aware of the vitriol the ladies were spitting out, and this led to the hiring mistake.

Fair so far? Now comes the crusher. The Catholic League informed Edwards that Ms. Marcotte wrote a description of Mary, the mother of Jesus, having sex with the "Lord" on her website. It was a vile piece of business that can't even be printed in this newspaper.

And what did John Edwards do? He said he "disagreed" with Marcotte's words, but would not fire her or Ms. McEwan, who wrote on her blog that Christian believers were "mother-f---ers."

I couldn't believe it. So I had my TV producers call Edwards and ask his Chief of Staff what was going on. Neither Edwards nor anybody in his campaign would talk to us about the issue.

So I went on TV and told the country exactly what I have just told you. Within minutes of the broadcast, the Edwards campaign got rid of Marcotte. McEwan left the next day.

So how could John Edwards be so stupid? I asked that question to Jane Fleming, the President of the Young Democrats Association. Ms. Fleming replied that the bloggers didn't really do anything wrong, although she also "disagreed" with them. I then asked her if she would hire a person who said vile things about blacks. She said no. So why is it okay to say vile things about Christians?

Ms. Fleming had no answer to that question, but I do. In the far-left, Christian-bashing is totally acceptable and rarely are any consequences imposed. The only reason these two women are not working for John Edwards right now is that he didn't want to take the heat my program was giving him.

This entire shoddy episode has badly damaged Edwards, in my opinion, but it also points out that American culture, especially in the swampy blogosphere, is extremely tolerant of Christian-haters. Again, this could never have happened to any other religious or minority group.

To me, all bigotry is unacceptable in a just society. You can criticize any group on the issues, but using obscenity and sacrilege to demean perceived opponents should be condemned in no uncertain terms.

Even by John Edwards.

I guess I find myself wondering why it's OK for so many so-called "Christians" to use piety and religious zeal (the counterpoint to O'Reilly's question about non-believers using bigotry and sacrelige against their perceived opponents) to say vile things about non-believers? And gays? And Muslims? Buddhists? Atheists? Against anyone who differs from their viewpoint?

Above all, how is it even possible for anyone to spend more than a half second listening to or reading the greatest irony of all--a pompous, angry, self-righteous buffoon like O'Reilly asking questions about bigotry and vitriol when he himself has cornered the market on such behavior?

Married father-of-two Bill O'Reilly pointing fingers at a blogger for using untoward language, particularly in defense of the holy religious right, is just laughable. This from a man who two years ago had to settle $2 million to $10 million on a plaintiff in his sexual harrassment case so the facts of the case wouldn't continue to be made public. Where, on recorded message after message (recordings still in possession of the court and attorneys on both sides), he left an employee assurances of how big his penis is, how nasty and skilled he is in bed, how he'd like to do her six ways from Sunday, among other things Then accused her of extortion when she filed suit to get that to stop?

The fact that a "paragon of virtue" like Bill O'Reilly has the cojones to point the finger at anyone else on moral or religiously righteous grounds--and that anyone, religious or otherwise, would ever again put stock in what he says or writes--just astonshes me.

I don't understand why their feathers got ruffled. The people didn't say "vile" things about Christians, they said that the mother of god had sex with god to conceive the son of god, or something like that. Isn't that pretty much what the religion is all about?

All religions should be subject to criticisms and unrelenting opposition. Unfortunately, people are afraid to go after them and O'Reilly is sort of right that Christianity gets more than their share. I think that we must dismantle and deconstruct all of the ideas that are bad, and if that means religious people will be offended, then so be it.

I wrote a piece about the virgin birth for xmas 2005 and put it here. It was probably the filthiest, most heretical take on this stupid myth ever published. I still have it on my computer, and can post it again, if anybody is interested.

i actually agree with you that offensive imagery has no place in the struggle surrounding faith, but only in that it shows a lack of respect for differing viewpoints. even though the religious may attack unbelievers with all of the vitriol at their command, that is no reason to respond in kind and anyone that would stoop to their level should not be associated with our policymakers.

that being said, you must admit that such offensive pieces can be considered a response to the constant assault by the religious right on those who choose a different path. the quotes i've included above (from your own post) are perfect examples of how you and many of the loudest voices in the christian machine paint their enemies in the broadest strokes; describing atheists and progressives as heathens with a total lack of morality. lumping us all into one category could be considered equally offensive.

the long and the short of it is that as long as the religious zealots continue to take the illusory moral high ground and act as if all others are lesser beings, they will continue to be the targets of the fanatics on the other side. if these reactionary christians can't get over their elitist attitudes and see the possible merit in the beliefs of others then they will find many more of us taking up the sword against them.

i admit that i haven't read this supposedly offensive piece by ms. marcotte, i did try a cursory search for it and found nothing. if someone could post a link to it i would appreciate it, thanks.:)

So you're pretty much saying that all Christians are judgemental and talk shit about people who don't beleive? Have you met every Christian in the world? Are you seriously trying to say that since the majority of the country is Christian, then it's ok to bash them? You make me sick. The people with "mental problems" are the ones that persecuted women, executed people accused of witchcraft, tortured and killed heretics, conducted inquisitions, supported and participated in genocide and tyranny, fought against literacy and science, and generally lead the parade of human stupidity. If you want to talk about "perverse", take a look at the clergy's rate of sex crimes against children. Not only is it far higher than other professions, but many religious organizations have covered up the crimes and protected the guilty.

sorry,
in my haste to answer i find myself guilty of the same generalizations i despise in others. of course not all christians are judgmental, bigoted fools. a more proper wording would have been "the machinery behind the christian agenda". in personal life i have met some caring and even handed christians and i even count some of them among my dearest friends. my argument is with the political creatures who cloak themselves in holy robes before interfering in worldly affairs. i'm at war with the powerful, not their constituency who honestly live by the philosophies of peace and forgiveness.

however; if those believers help enable these corrupt christian leaders or unfairly judge and persecute those with whom they disagree, they too make themselves targets. those who rush to judge in their headlong flight to righteousness should expect to be judged in return and, if they wish to survive the slings and arrows of their enemies, grow a thicker skin.

I just find it pathetic that 90% of the christians/chatholics only take in half of there teachings if half. Ive been in chatholic schools my entire life and it really put me towards the athiest side. It is wrong to bash on religions for there teachings but for there actions i find it completely OK. In every teaching God is the perfect source of life, if you feel that you need to push that upon people, maybe you do need alittle criticism, maybe more if you have the attitued that all ppl should be the way you are. Some people put there noses in others lives, both ways not just one, but either argument holds when u have others pushing you to believe something you dont, However the way they make this sound is like some one just stood up one day and bashed the teachings of god, even tho i dont believe in god, doesnt mean i go around saying he doesnt exist and how all his teachings are messed up. That for ppl to decide on there own, as long as they leave me out of it.

Personally, though I believe all religions and races and hobbiests should have equal rights to feel good about what they believe or enjoy, I also believe people have the right to vocalize their opinions, whatever they may be. I don't plan to even think of doing anything about this until laws based on one religion or another get passed. That ticks me off. In the exact same way the drug laws do.

To claim that Christians are currently burning witches at the stake and conducting inquisitions,torturing heretics..is all false..Christianity has reformed it's self of those ways and is now a positive force in the world. My little sister,went to several foreign countries,as a missionary-student and promoted literacy and science,she's on her way to a masters degree in teaching and the Spanish language,there are many Christian universitys,that are teaching at the cutting edge of science and knowledge..not leading a parade of human stupidity,as you claim. There have been studies done,that clearly show that a religious person,has to reason and reconcile,the differences between the expectations of their Faith and the rest of the world,at a higher level of intellectual reasoning,than those who are not religious..to claim that religious folks "think less" and have "stopped thinking",is false and patently wrong.

It is a historical fact,that Jesus lived..He is not non-existant,as you claim..the path to Heaven,is narrow and twisting,difficult to find and even more difficult to stay on..it takes a wise person to do such,and wisdom is not evolved by stupidity..but rather,by recognizing stupidity and correcting it. If religious folks have "stopped thinking" and their minds have become "decadent",why is it,that we have so many universities that have contributed so much to science and the humanities ?

Sorry Torog, but as long as you religious folks keep telling me how to live my life on the grounds of morality, I will fight Christianity. When our laws are influenced by your religion then, something is wrong in America. You yourself should see the current going on's in the middle east. Its a prime example of why religion should have no influence on government and government no control of religion. So when the religious right start pulling off the "Holier then thou" attitude , you bet your ass the left will come out swinging. However if you want to live in your bible thumper community and practice your religion in peace, go right ahead. But don't force it on me by trying to make your religion law.

Religion, oh, religion. the root of all evil, right next to money. If more people were like the Indians that saw God in nature, there would be no cause for wars. God is all around us all the time, it is our inability to see this that has caused a need for religions. Religions profess their dogma to be the only truth. How many religions are there? But there is only one God. The Indians saw God in the landscape, the trees, the animals, all things in nature. They knew to take care of mother earth as it was a gift from the creator, "God". We have gone far away from those simple days and created religions so we can have wars over idealogies. The Indians (American) only fought over territory. The South American indians, are pretty much a peaceful lot as long as you don't infringe on their territory. We "saved" these savages in the name of Jesus and killed more with disease than we ever converted. According to Christian belief, If you aren't baptized in the name of the lord, you'll not get into heaven. So that lets out about 4 billion+ people. Are we so vain as to assume they will all descend into a firey lake called hell. Do the Indians that have not been converted go straight to hell. I think not. A creator would not destroy his creations just to make a point. I think religion needs to have some common sense pumped into it. Believe what you will, just don't condemn anyone that doesn't think like you!

As an atheist, I have nothing bad to say about faith in a high power- your choice. What she did was completely childish and uncalled for, but again, it's protected by the Constitution. Doesn't make it right. Personally, I think John Edwards is much too lukewarm to be a successful candidate for Pres.

But when hard-core Christian crusaders and others try to butt their way into politics and attempt to censor people- REGARDLESS of their beliefs, something needs to be done. We have a Constitution and a Bill Of Rights. If you want to call yourself a true American, you can't flip-flop, and bend the Amendments to what suits you best.

If you can express your own thoughts freely, there is no reason why others should censor theirs which disagree with you. It needed to be HIS personal choice to fire her. Not America's. HE has a choice to hire who he wants to work for him, and it's not really the public's business to demand he fire someone.

Again, I DO NOT CONDONE HER ACTIONS. I agree with her right to freedom of speech, but I disagree with her actions.

NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT NOT TO BE OFFENDED.
