Who here snowboard or ski?
I'm going to ski with friends on a weekend gateaway to the Cannan Valley/Timberline region in WV. It isn't Colorado or Utah, but I'm psyched. Were staying in this gorgeous cabin, with a nice lounge with a fireplace and a hot tub. It's gonna be sweet, with some night skiing, which I only did once. Smoking a few blunts going down the hill. I can't wait.......AHHHHHH. Tomorrow never comes.

Another skier checking in!
I used to date this dude who was on ski patrol at some cheesy little local 'mountain'. They all chip in on a keg and then get the guy in the groomer cat to take it up to the summit for them and then they'd bury it in the snow in the woods for future enjoyment.
I love the whole skiing lifestyle... too bad I'm poor now that I have a house... =(
My favorite mountain is Wildcat in NH- still owned by the US forest service and feels like stepping back in time to the 50s- gnarly REAL New England skiing, steep narrow trails, minimally groomed, awesome views.
Then Okemo comes in a close 2nd for their AWESOME snowmaking/grooming ( I love early-season skiing best of all) and really well-laid out trails and terrain parks.

New England skiing sounds really nice. Can't get any better than that, perhaps with minimal people around. Ahhhh. Sounds like my kind of skiing. How close is it to Killington? New England is a region I have to tackle, perhaps next year.
My trip was quite an adventure. When we got there, my friend tried to turn around to find our cabin, and the snow on the side of the road caved in, finding there was no road there in the first place. We were stuck on the side of a windy, typical West Virginia road. The whole town must've stopped by to either offer help or just to stare and laugh, including one notable hick family in a old broken-down station wagon asking if we needed to use their celluar phone, and one teenager debating whether he should stay with us until the tow truck comes. Even the cops paid us a visit. What a way to start out a ski trip. Gotta love the people in WV.
The first place I went to was Timberline. Narrow trails that were groomed, but all trails merged into a slow ski area and there were a lot of people. It's like playing pinball to avoid them all. I made my only fall of the trip to avoid some guy who hogged the hill, and through that, my binding popped. It wasn't fun skiing where I couldn't let go.
The next day I went to Caanan Valley, I almost didn't ski because of the disappointment of Timberline. But I'm glad I did, this place reminded me of why I love skiing. There was a mixture of wide, groomed trails, narrow forest scenic trails and nice off-course powder skiing. Not to mention the amazing view of the valley. Most of all, it wasn't crowded, the lines were short, and at most one or two others in the black diamonds! They had a terrain park with rails, jumps of all kinds, even going off a car. That was really beast. It was reminesent of the type of skiing in the Alps, albeit smaller, but to even find a place this good 3 hours away from my house in the mid-atlantic is quite a coup. I didn't want to go home :( I was having too good of a time, but I guess all good things have to come to an end.

.
Wildcat is nowhere near Killington.
It's actually not hard to get to from Boston... go up to the upper third of NH in winter and it's like Boston has come up to stay with you!
Wildcat is one of the more uncrowded mountains in the area. I would also suggest Jay Peak for a pretty gnarly New England experience. That mountain is in north-central VT right on the Canada line.
HEy if ya make it up here give me a shout in local. I'll lay some tracks with ya. But not at stupid killington, lol!

I am! I used to go on skiing trips with my family all the time when I was younger, to Keystone, Breckenridge, Steamboat Springs in Colorado... SO beautiful. But now my parents are too old and lazy to go anymore, but this winter I've been taking snowboarding lessons for a gym credit for college, but it's SO MUCH harder than skiing, my ass and knees have never been so bruised... this Friday we have a 'free' day with no lessons, I'm thinking I'm going to give up the board and go back to skiing. But maybe the reason I sucked at boarding was because I showed up stoned for every lesson.......
Any thoughts on skiing vs. boarding for those of you who have actually tried both?

lol, guess Killington is too tourista eh? Thanks for the recommendations, I'm always in the hunt for the best slopes. When I go, I'll give you a shout :)
For WhosGotTheHerb, I can snowboard as well, but nowhere near as good as I'm at skiing. Snowboarding is another animal, although usage of balance is the same, it's more work than skiing, especially on your calfs. You just have to get use to it.
I enjoy skiing much more, on my beautiful 210s. I don't understand the trend in the last 10 years of skiing on shorter skis, the typical height now 170-180 are what I used when I was 11 and beginning to ski.

Ow snowboarding hurts my ass. NEVER AGAIN!!!
I am all about the planks. But I like the little stubby ones for backcountry skiing. I have 3 pairs of skis... my short, wide 'rock skis' that I took with me to Alaska along with a pair of snowshoes, some longer, less shaped Fischers that I bring when I know the trails are going to be well-groomed, and an inbetween pair of MadTrix for pretty much the rest of the time.
Yeah killington is MAD touristy and the thing that makes me maddest is that to keep up with keeping snow onthe trails, they make snow DURING THE DAY on open trails! It's like a 20 degree car wash.
No thanx.
Okemo is much more considerate IMO. They avoid blowing snow during the day, and never on open trails.

Wow, that puts me off from going to Killington at all. I figured there was no snow-making there. But that's absurd to do it during the day. It must be that crowded or they're just inconsiderate. I don't enjoy skiing with unnatural snow being blown in your face, I agree with you there. My whole perception of Killington has changed.

I can't believe you don't like snowboarding! Well it is a pretty rough sport, its best to go when there is tons of fresh powder on the bunny hill, and snowing too so theres constant powder buildup, then when you inevitably fall on your ass it will be like a marshmallow instead of packed ice.
Once when i was snowboarding in new zealand we had reservations for this really popular resort and it snowed the night before we were scheduled to go.
you'd think that would be great but the fuckers actually had to CLOSE because they "received too much snow" and couldn't open.......TOO MUCH SNOW??? as long as the fucking chairlift is still visible there is not TOO much snow.
so we ended up being diverted to another crappier resort, along with 50,000 other assholes. and they had the snow makers on and pointed directly into the run. so it was people packed shoulder to shoulder going down the run with a jet of fresh frozen shaved ice being blown into your face.
the resort probably made bank but it sucked ass for everyone. the lines were insane and the runs were PACKED. i have a picture somewhere of people as far as the eye can see waiting in line for a double wide chairlift.

I got a pass to the canyons, park city. I like the place because you can go to the far end of the resort where few people go. Maybe even smoke a bowl if its not to crowded

The Canyons were awesome. That was my favorite in Utah, other than Alta, which was a skier's dream. Park City, eh.....

ive been skiing/snowboarding since i was 4 years old....I'm mostly a boarder now but skiing is still fun now and then. every year i get a season pass to sierra and northstar (northern cali). Nothin better than getting blazed off your ass on the charlift up and then smashing down the hill as fast as you can:pimp:

lol, I been there too. Northern Cali skiing is awesome, my cousin use to work as a snowboard instructor at Boreal. Northstar, Squaw Valley, Heavenly (well it's in NV, but same area). I bought a QP when I was over there, and I carried it everywhere, everytime I passed someone, they were like "man I smell some dank." It was awesome. Good skiing.

Snowboarding for the win. I hurt my shoulder a little last year, so I'm on a bit of a break til I get back into the swing. I'm a little like SwirlyMass up there, I push the envelope a little too hard for my own good.
Love blazing up almost every time I go on the lift, though. As long as I'm not stuck with an odd-looking stranger, or have any kids right behind me, I'm blazin' up. Only thing I can do to pass the time while I wait for the kiddies to stop jamming up the lift everytime they fall at the bottom. I've had the "pleasure" of having to teach someone almost everytime I've been recently, which doesn't leave much room for personal boarding, but hopefully one day, I'll have a posse to roll around with.
Stinky, I hear ya about those snow-makers, they're horrible. They get my joint wet, too. LOL, j/k. Maybe next time I make a trip, I'll check out Wildcat. Never heard of it. Sounds nice. Redlined420, right?

I have thought about snowboarding so many times but I hate to think of spending one day on my ass. So i just ski...skiing in southern california is a little different, shorter runs, warmer weather and a ton of snow making. still fun.
I have only skiied in New England once and guess where that was?........Killington...took a bus up from Boston. they even had movies..what was that movie? I went in January and it was cold and there was a lot of snow making going on. There was snow shooting everywhere.

Hey, Geo.
Well, yea, it seem that this is the reason MOST people don't try out snowboarding. The first day or so is a literal PAIN IN THE A$$. I've taught several people how to board, and the majority of them were crying by late afternoon. :sadcrying haha.
After you get over that hump, though, it's a fun and rewarding sport. (not really sure how it's rewarding, but the word just sounded good there)
I always roll several joints to bring with me and smoke on the lift or in the woods somewhere off to the side. Hell, with the wind up there, it's like having a 800,000 cfm fan for ventilation. I ain't worried about the smell much.
