In a few years every medical marijuana clinic will be shut down by the DEA

This is bullshit. Last month all 5 of the local clinics in my area got shut down by the DEA for bullshit reasons.

It all started in San Diego.

The San Diego D.A.'s office told the North County Times that the county was helping the DEA because dispensaries were selling marijuana to almost anyone who wanted it, rather than legitimate patients. Undercover officers reportedly obtained open-ended recommendations for vague and unsubstantiated complaints from several doctors. Four of the doctors were reported to the state medical board for further investigation.

DA Bonnie Dumanis said she supported medical marijuana "wholeheartedly," but complained that Prop. 215 was being "severely abused."

How can you bust people for breaking the law when there are no rules?" asked patient advocate Dion Markgraaff. "That's what everybody wants, regulation."

San Diego police chief William Lansdowne, who has generally supported medical marijuana, said that the dispensaries had become "magnets for crime" such as burglaries and robberies.

While most of the dispensaries have experienced burglaries, they report receiving few if any complaints from neighbors. Several were visited in a previous round of warning raids last December.

Some 15 persons were arrested on state charges, among them directors and employees of Ocean Beach Dispensary, Native Sun Dispensary, Utopia, the California Medical Center in La Jolla, and Top Shelf Dispensary in Solana Beach.

Six defendants were charged in federal indictments. One was John Sullivan, owner of the Purple Bud Room, who has had repeated run-ins with the law.

The other federal defendants were associated with Co-Op San Diego: Wayne Hudson, Chris Larkin, Ross McManus, Scott Wright, and Michael Ragin. They were charged in connection with an alleged major cultivation operation.

The San Diego district attorney's office indicated that they are not seeking stiff sentences, but simply want operators to cease and desist.

The city of San Diego has been typically supportive of medical marijuana. In 2003, the city adopted liberal guidelines for cultivation and even proposed a patient ID program.

In contrast, San Diego county has been notably hostile to Prop. 215. Earlier this year, it filed a lawsuit against the state of California and San Diego NORML seeking to overturn the state law requiring that counties maintain a medical marijuana identification card program. The lawsuit argues that Prop. 215 should be disregarded because it is against federal law.

Most legal experts believe that the lawsuit will fail, since courts have long held that states do not have to enforce federal law.

However, the legality of dispensaries is far more questionable. State law protects sales only by "designated primary caregivers" on a non-profit basis. San Diego's medical marijuana task force specifically declined to endorse unregulated dispensaries.

San Diego patient advocates are hoping to prevail on the city to regulate dispensaries like other jurisdictions, such as San Francisco and Los Angeles County.

The internet circulated alarming reports that DEA agents were threatening to shut dispensaries across the whole state. However, there is no evidence of further plans beyond San Diego. Without local support, a full-fledged assault on the clubs would tax DEA's manpower and create a nasty PR problem. In the last three years, the DEA has refrained from medical marijuana busts except where they have support from local law enforcement.

Greater LA currently has around 150 cannabis clubs. Unlike the city, the county has an ordinance specifically regulating dispensaries. LA Police Chief William Bratton has backed a moratorium on new clubs, saying that he supports medical marijuana, but that most of the clubs are catering to recreational users. Unlike the DEA, the LAPD only targets those that are causing a problem in the neighborhood.

The government doesn't really care about the quality of actual people's lives, of course. It has only two priorities: power and money. And in the issue of medicinal cannabis, I think power is their motivation for opposing it.

You see, for whatever reason, it's spent the past seven decades trying to convince the public that cannabis is this evil narcotic that kills people, makes people go insane, tears down the moral fabric of society, etc. etc. etc. And for the most part, the public wholeheartedly believed it—at least up until the Beat generation and of course the hippie generation, when people started experimenting with it en masse.

But the people who were smoking it had, for the most part, a decidedly anti-government attitude. Beats and hippies were questioning authority and declaring themselves in opposition to the policies of the government. Had the government relented and reversed their slander campaign against cannabis, it would have looked to the public like it was giving in to the demands of its enemies. Any power analyst will tell you that if you want to hold on to power, or create the illusion that you are powerful, the last thing you want to do is to change your mind and give in to the arguments of your opponents.

The government may know very well that cannabis isn't going to kill anybody, that it's less harmful than tobacco or alcohol, and that they might very well make a lot of money if it were made legal. But all these considerations are outweighed by the simple fact that if the government were to reverse its policies on cannabis, it would be essentially admitting that it has been lying to us for seventy years. It would lose the support of huge segments of the population who have grown up with its lies and wholeheartedly believe them. Politically, it would spell suicide for anyone in the government who tried to do it. And in the world of electoral politics, facts and ethics don't matter. Only power.

I feel sorry for the folks who have relyed on such clubs but to be honest they never were going to last Fed law rules and just like one's said Power and money, all the ideals aside There's not enough reason for the fks to change there ways.

I am one of those legel patients and depend on the store for 90% of my weed.
It is all about the regulation and taxation. How can the governmet tax and regulate what we grow in our own homes? They can't and that is why it is illegal unlike tobacco which is seasonal and easily taxed and regulated. {But causes cancer}

Shit, while you're complaining about the government shutting down weed clinic's, I'm concerned about the government's plot to implant each and every person with a microchip, (administered VIA injection). I'm concerned about high school students being finger-scanned for purchasing lunches WITHOUT parental consent..concerned about homeland security's CRIMINAL spying by phone tapping you..concerned about future FALSE-FLAG operations carried by the government..which can very well be 100 times more deadlier than the 9/11 attacks, to lead us to another war. I'm concerned about the authority the elite have, and their capabilities of enforcing MARTIAL LAW with a SNAP of a finger. I'm concerned about living in a police state which the military are specifically trained to confiscate American citizens weapons to ENFORCE a tyranny. The DEA raided those places since a large amount of the "paitents" that purchase from those clinics are recreational users with no medical problems that could be treated by THC. Don't even act like you don't know. I know so many kids who got clinic passes just like the article described, by doctors who wrote off bullshit. So basically those clinics deal drugs (especially since a lot of that clinic weed ends up being traded on the street).

Very legitmate reasons for a raid. Wake up. Medical marijuana should be for the paitents who need it. Assholes who illegitimately got passes are now crossing into the territory of drug dealing and it's THEM who caused this. Blame the people who illegitimately obtained passes. They're fucking it up for the real paitents.

But yea, if these clinics want to stay open they need to pay more attention to whom they are selling it to, they get more business by selling to people who dont have med cards. So they should be shut down for the illegal distribution of pot, u may disagree, but the clinics are getting what they deserve, and the real patients suffer. I would open up a legit shop and keep it legit, they know the gov. watches them like a HAWK, if they did by law what they were supposed to, they would be still open today, sorry to the ppl who actually need the pot.

for practically your first post that is not a good way to get known here. some people depend on the medical cannabis and those who don't need it but get it are possibly putting someone's life at risk. do you understand people are using this to control cancer and other mental illnesses, most likely not since the tone/attitude in your voice makes you sound like a 13 or 14, 15 year old at best. the DEA did this because of the fact that the cannabis wasn't going strictly to med. patients, it was going to recreational users who use it to just get high. and he didn't say he's the only one who should get to get his "greedy hands" on good cannabis. if you want good cannabis, grow your own and save the "good" stuff for the med. users. time to grow up kid, we aren't in elementary school anymore :S4:

Excellent, we aren't in elementary school anymore. Thus, you realize that this issue is far more than simply a question of medicinal use or not. Marijuana prohibition boils down to individual sovereignty over one's body. The issue is now convoluted because the only toe-hold the re-legalization movement has consistently been able to grab is through medicinal marijuana. I am fully aware and sympathetic to those who need to use cannabis hemp in order to alleviate symptoms and treat themselves; however, there is absolutely no shortage of medicinal dispensaries from which they may obtain their medication. Much like a weed itself, medicinal dispensaries are cropping up all over California.

Hatred and anger is the absolutely worst way we can relate to one another. Perhaps the method by which the busted dispensaries were less-than thorough enough, which led them to being targeted by LEO. Certainly it is a free man's right to do what he likes with his body, and hence nobody is "ruining" it for anybody else.

Realize what is happening, and communicate to find how we may adapt and transcend this problem. No need to argue. Evolve.

That's the DEA's job, close the legal state authorized stores, send the people back to the criminals selling marijuana,dope, speed everything...so they can have their jobs back, rather than having to sit back and see American citizens have safe access.

yet think about how much money is made from cancer..really think about it. Medications, chemotherapy, specialist visits, doctors, etc..everything associated with it..they can make so much effing money.

Then think about how much cancer, disease, and death is associated with marijuana. NONE. Our government is greedy, and corrupt as fuck. Sad and very true. If they were concerned for our well being, cigarette companies wouldn't be increasing the nicotine content in cigarettes to make them more addictive. Nor would we disallowed from smoking marijuana while use and our children be allowed to inhale deadly, radioactive tobacco smoke.

I found out their are more cannabis clubs then Mcdonalds, Wendys, and Burger King combined in LA alone. So if they shut down a dozen or so a month how long will it take for them to shut down completely? And who is stopping the people of california form opening a couple dozen or so new Cannabis clubs a month? People do it for bars/clubs all the time, a liquer estsablishment gets shut down on Friday and by saturday night their is a new name on the sign new owner and bussiness goes on like usual. We cant let them win because they think were weak and devided. We cant fight back with violance but we can fight back with the people speaking and doing what we know is right. as my old boss/roommate who penned prop 215 said. "All cannabis use is medicinal". Those "recreational" users who just want to get high that people talk about are getting high for a reason probably to relive stress and anxiety which are both medical issues...

But yeah fuk the DEA w/bunch of barbwire bundled up into a dildo. Blame it more on this Nazi administration not recognizing states rights. That's why everyone should vote for Ron Paul in the primary's and the general election in 08 too.

But what will eventually happen is that "clinics/clulbs/coops" will just go underground and be delivery services. Growers should do that out here instead of just selling to the clubs to then rip off the patients come on todayhere in Sac I just got an 1/8th of Pot of Gold for $65... what a fricken rip off.

But alas the DEA will never win. Weed is meant to be free and is too easy to grow to be stopped. They'd have a better chance at stopping cocaine and meth than cannabis.

It's just total bullshit how the DEA considers Cannabis worse than Meth and Coke. Meth and Coke are actually both availible at pharmacies (it's a fact) while Cannabis which is one of the oldest medicines known to mankind is persecuted.
