Long Time Growers !Wanted!

hey all you growers out there..this one is mainly for ppl who have been growing since say 60's (if theres any on here) onwards or any longtime grower...whoever ..neway my question is...have you seen any noticable differences in mj itself? since whenever you can remember i.e. looks? stature? potency? flowering times? avoiding the fact that technology has changed the way things are done nowdays, crossbreeding etc i suppose this question is leaning more to the outdoor grower but still don't hesitate to wack your story down!

I'm not 50 years old, but I can tell you that the difference is the strains.
We have had access to many different strains since the 60's, what was available back then were less potent strains. It's jsut a simple development of genetics and harnessing plants with the traits we want most.

i once read a statistic that mj is now like 3x more potent then back in the day.......im guessing with all the tech advances like HID lights, back then all they had were sunlight and flouros. Also with new nutrients and crossbrieding i would imagine its a lot better

Lights and technique aren't really the reason MJ is 3X more potent

I've been growing for about 30 years indoor and out the last few all indoor. The newest weed is no stronger than say the old panama red or columbian gold both of which gave me couch lock. Both sativa plants but grown in the tropics. During the Vietnam war was when I was introduced to Indica. Thai stick and the like was all pure Indica. I kind of like the hydrids but nome of them is any better than my orange bud that was developed as a strain in the early 80s. Been smoking the weed for 50 years. During the 60s I smoked some powerful stuff but I'm sure it was laced.

Well, I haven't been growing for 50 years, but here's my two cents worth:

Weed that is 3 times more powerful now was also three times more powerful then too. It probably just wasn't available. Plain old suckie dirt weed sucks now and it sucked back then. There was potent strains back then, and there are even more now, due to crossing, and breeding out bad traits and breeding in good ones. Any one strain will not increase in potentcy over time.

I would agree with that statistic if it said that there were now three times more strains available that are potent. Probably more like 30 times though.

Alot of this has to do with selective breeding.
And cross breeding.
Sometimes when you cross 2 strains you get something better then either one on it's own.
So people have been growing ,picking the most potent strains and then cross breeding them.
It's actually pretty simple.

I have to whole heartedly agree with this posters comments. Although I wasn't smoking in the 60's and 70's, I was smoking in the 80's and growing. Early eighties and preceding that time, Most of the marijuana in the USA was imported. Jamaican brick, thai sticks, chocalate thai, panama red etc. There were some people growing for themselves, but nothing like today. The marijuana then was just as strong as the pot now.

The differences are optimizations of plant growth. The old wives tale that pot is so much stronger now is just not scientifically supported. Genetics does not change that drastically over only 30 years. With selective breeding and hybridizations, we have ben able to optimize the potential of old strains and new strains, but killer pot now was just like killer pot then.

Also keep in mind then that when you talk of getting pot then like acupolco gold, cloumbian gold, chocalate thai etc most of these plants were grown in large fields just out on their own. It was a cash crop and provided awesome smoke.

Thats true.
But selective breeding and hybrids are responsible for some amazing strains.
You can't deny that.
But like you said killer weed is nothing new.
Just grown better.

Oh no doubt, but keep in mind, hybridization is only an optimalization technique. usually done to promote or delete various characteristics. I was talking in a general sense in regards to actual THC levels. Killer bud and strains are just so much more prevelant now.

ganja gets better and better each day.

back in the old days of panama red and such,
pot wasn't gown and dried in as scientific way as it is now.
in the old days, they used to dryit outdoors in big piles and it would actually become a little composted.
and they used to sell it by the whole plant
all at once in a dried up state.

now there is a grow house on every block in the world!

they'd keep the very best buds for theselves or for making hash.

your father didn't get the buds very often.
it was mostly leaf

Even after all my reading and such I still dont see how plants naturally got more potent. I mean it's all the same thing, maybe different species like Sativas and Indicas but still, how the hell did it get more potent xD. Will it get even more potent in the future? :O

Thats the point being made.....it hasn't gotten more potent. It's just that cultivation techniques have gotten more refined and allowed a greater ratio of the pot sold to be of high quality. In the distant past there were still very potent strains of bud, but people didn't have such ready access to them due to poor cultivation techniques. As I said before....most growers did not apply good horticulture techiniques to their grows since they were usually grown out of the modernized countries and were grown just as cash crops. If in doubt ask some old timers about the Jamaican Lambsbread that use to be around in the early eighties. Shit would knock you on your ass if you were lucky to get it. Also, do you see the dates that alot of the orginal strains like Afghani, skink #1 etc originated? They were like around in the seventies. Through crossbreeding, and selective breeding we have gotten more stabalized strains, but genetics does not change that fast that all of a sudden those strains are a 1000 x more potent now.

The NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE reported last month that sperm count has declined 33% during the past 20 years among a study-population of 1351 healthy, fertile men in Paris, France. A briefer report in the BRITISH MEDICAL JOURNAL last summer found that, comparing men of similar ages, sperm count in 3729 Scottish men had declined 41% among those born in 1969 compared to those born in 1941.

LOL! I don't know why that was brought up, but as far as I know sperm count is not soley gentically predetermined. Various enviromental factors have direct affect on the amount of spermatocytes a testicle produces.

sperm gets girls pregnant so hold it in!

I believe that Genetics and our ability to control or manipulate them has allowed people to come out with purple strains, widows, rhinos, ect. So i mean if i were to find a plant out in the middle of the woods one day for some weird reason i could say that, that particular plant could have the original gentics like the plants from the 50's 60's and some easrly 70's but today just about any plnt you buy or get in bag seed is a genetic alteration, of course it is more potent then what was in the past. GARDEN KNOWM idk what to say to your addition to all of this, i knwo that becaus ethere is more estrogen in the water that this is why us men are loosing our swimmers. Shit sucks!

I have to disagree with you on this point. The marijuana was relatively the same potency back in the day. I use to grow killer one hit Afghani in the early eighties and the guy had grown that strain for likw 13 years prior to that. Ask the dead heads from the 70's if pot was as strong and they will tell you yes. Has it increased in potency possibly a little....yes, but not to the extent to which people think. Although due to cross, selective etc breeding we have come out with more differnt strains which can increase the ratio of pot plants that have higher THC levels, but it will not hardly affect the potency levels at all. That is something that is genetically determined and until we can due physical gene alterations with selective accuracy we are at the mercy of mother time. And that process does not make drastic changes in just 30 years.

I have stated it before that our current state of MJ growing is flourishing because we have learned and developed better techniques for OPTIMIZING growth, potency and stability potentials. Thats where the pot has changed.

It's also possible for a plant to cross pollinate on it's own outdoors.
