Legit reporters debunk Obama's "Muslim background"

Yet another reason why no one should rely on Fox for news accuracy. The story of Obama's childhood education at an Indonesian madrassa first appeared last week in a conservative magazine called Insight, and the next morning Fox News picked it up and played it prominently and repeatedly. Insight magazine falsely attributed the story to researchers associated with the Clinton campaign, but that's now been debunked, too, despite Insight's statement that it stands by its story.

ABC News: Huge Fuss Over Obama's 'Ordinary' Public School

As you can read for yourself in the link above, two years of Obama's elementary education, it turns out, was at a respected Indonesian public school that educated children of all faiths. The ABC reporters even visited there and researched its history. It was never a madrassa, although Islamic children attended school when Obama was there and still do today. So did (and do) Christians, Buddhists, atheists and others. Obama's campaign staff were apparently caught off guard by this smear campaign, and my instinct tells me that this particular smear may have its origins among conservatives, but the legit reporters are still working on uncovering that truth.

Howard Wolfson, a spokesman for the Clinton campaign, vehemently denied that the campaign played any role in the smear, to which Jeffrey Kuhner, editor of Insight Magazine told ABC News that his message to the Clinton campaign is: "Sue us."

"If he's so confident that this is a National Enquirer-style made up story," the editor said, "He and Hillary should sue the pants off us, because if they're right they could make millions and millions of dollars. But then we'll depose the investigators who have been conducting the investigation into Obama's background and they know it. This story is multi-sourced â?¦ I have never been more sure of a story in my life."

"There are so many enemies for every candidate and they all have access to the media," Sabato said. "It could have been the Republicans. It could have been one of many different people trying to kill off the Obama candidacy. So it's like a murder mystery â?? there are tons of suspects."

I myself will occasionally glance at the FOX to see what the creeps are up to, usually I just get a good laugh when I see them twisting the news to a Bush talking point, and wonder if anyone takes them seriously. They are not a news station, Mcneil-Leher, now known as the Jim Leher news hour is about as close to news as you can get!

Oh they all picked up on it for sure! Fox, though, was the first to pull it off Insight and play it up, and then it ballooned from there. If it's sensational and it's anti-liberal, they're on the job.

I agree. Actually, in an earlier thread--the one on Hillary making it official, I think--I theorized that having someone in office with more insight and understanding of the Islamic culture would probably be a tremendous advantage to us. Dubya, I think, tends to be an Islamophobe. And the truth is that Islam, Christianity and Judaism share a whole lot more in common than most folks realize. But if Obama has more insight, which certainly isn't necessarily proven, he won't have gotten it through his childhood education.

Obama might be a little young for the job (President), but look at John Kennedy, he stepped up when he had to, it cost him his life, but he was for the people. How long has it been since we had a "for the people" president besides Kennedy. Franklin Delano Roosevelt comes to mind. The corporations have been in charge too long. they have plundered the workforce and destroyed good will accross the globe. The Ugly American is most represented by corporate greed, and a new order needs to step up, a government with a touchy feely kind of nuance, one that genuinely cares about their constituancy. ~LOL~ Fat chance, Eh!

All of that stuff in the so-called "Obama truth" video is so easily refutable it's almost funny. But more than anything, it spins information to make him and his wife look bad when it's not any more sinister than anything else other senators and their wives or other well-paid professional people have done. The price of his house? That's what houses cost where he lives, and if you look at the prices Republican senators paid for their houses, you'll see far more expensive ones--and you'll find business deals with questionable people, too.

The salary paid to the Treehouse Foods CEO? Check out executive salaries sometime in Forbes or Fortune. That wasn't particularly remarkable. They execs at the technology company I worked for before going back to school made more than that, and our company wasn't nearly as profitable as Wal-Mart, either. Thousands of CEO salaries in the U.S. are astonishingly unjustified when profits are taken into account. But they tried to make it like Michelle Obama was the cause of that Treehouse CEO's executive salary or that Barack Obama was somehow wrong for having said in a speech that Wal-Mart, which is one of the most notorious corporate offenders for hiring low-wage workers and not paying them enough or offering health coverage. His statement that that's a problem that needs fixing is right on.

That video also took issue with Michelle Obama's salary. Check out the salaries of hospital VPs sometime. It's right in line with what they make, and the fact that she got an increase isn't a sign of evil inequity or greed. It's simply how they're compensated.

The claim that was funniest to me was the part about Barack's wife's hospital "charging uninsured minorities three and a half times more than insured patients." Again, this is not something that's a sign of that particular hospital's evil inequity. It's how all hospitals everywhere work. You can confirm this for yourself. Insured people pay discounted prices because their insurance companies have negotiated discounts for health care services. Uninsureds--and this isn't just minorites, although the video spin made it sound this way--are charged top-dollar full retail prices for health care. They're charged that because they don't have the benefit of insurance discounts. Notice I used the term "charged" because they don't actually pay those prices. They can't afford to pay them. No one without insurance can, and many who have insurance can't afford their smaller, discounted percentages, either. What happens is the hospitals write-off those unpaid amounts and take tax writeoffs and pass the remaining losses off to their insured patients through steadily rising prices. This is all part of the completely unfair, hospital-corporation- and insurance-company-driven healthcare system we have in this country. And it's one that Obama is wise enough to know needs changing.

For the uninformed out there, watch out for things like candidate-truth sites. They're a lot like the 911Truth site. Prepared for folks without enough discrimination or informaton to see through the spin and understand what the real facts are.

Now Birdgirl, the right has been putting up with this same crap for years and years.......I think a bit of the ol' spin in the opposite direction is alright. LOL....he's still better than Hillary!!:)

In my book, if their politicians....left or right....their are probably skeletons in the closet.;)

I don't think the right has a lock on putting up with political mud-slinging and lies. The left has gotten more than its share, too, dating back to the late 50s and 60s. There was mud slung against Adlai Stevenson and Kennedy and it's been slung both ways ever since. Bill and Hillary have certainly had plenty, too. It goes both ways. Always has. Always will. If anyone thinks one party has it worse than another, they've not been paying enough attention.

The same is true of a Republicans-get-persecuted-worse point that Bong30 keeps making and I keep correcting when I see it. He keeps saying when Bush and the Republicans won their elections, the Democrats alone cried voter fraud. But, of course, that's not true at all. There were Republican complaints of voter fraud after this latest Democratic Congressional victory in at least five states. In two Congressional races, that's why there were recounts and the results didn't come in for a couple of days. Those claims go both ways. Only uninformed partisans see it happening to just one side.

The truth is that pretty much everyone--politicians and non-politicians alike--has skeletons in his closet. Ever ponder what'd happen if you decided to run for office? It's scary to contemplate.
