MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. (Jan. 25) - The military calls its new weapon an "active denial system," but that's an understatement. It's a ray gun that shoots a beam that makes people feel as if they are about to catch fire.
Military officials say it could save the lives of innocent civilians and service members in places like Iraq and Afghanistan .
The weapon is not expected to go into production until at least 2010, but all branches of the military have expressed interest in it, officials said.
During the first media demonstration of the weapon Wednesday, airmen fired beams from a large dish antenna mounted atop a Humvee at people pretending to be rioters and acting out other scenarios that U.S. troops might encounter in war zones.
The device's two-man crew located their targets through powerful lenses and fired beams from more than 500 yards away. That is nearly 17 times the range of existing non-lethal weapons, such as rubber bullets.
Anyone hit by the beam immediately jumped out of its path because of the sudden blast of heat throughout the body. While the 130-degree heat was not painful, it was intense enough to make the participants think their clothes were about to ignite.
"This is one of the key technologies for the future," said Marine Col. Kirk Hymes, director of the non-lethal weapons program at Quantico, Va., which helped develop the new weapon. "Non-lethal weapons are important for the escalation of force, especially in the environments our forces are operating in."
The system uses millimeter waves, which can penetrate only 1/64th of an inch of skin, just enough to cause discomfort. By comparison, microwaves used in the common kitchen appliance penetrate several inches of skin.
The millimeter waves cannot go through walls or glass, but they can penetrate most clothing, officials said.
The weapon could be mounted aboard ships, airplanes and helicopters, and routinely used for security or anti-terrorism operations.
"There should be no collateral damage to this," said Senior Airman Adam Navin, 22, of Green Bay, Wis., who has served several tours in Iraq.
Navin and two other airmen were role players in Wednesday's demonstration. They and 10 reporters who volunteered were shot with the beams. The beams easily penetrated various layers of winter clothing.
Airman Blaine Pernell, 22, of suburban New Orleans, said he could have used the system during his four tours in Iraq, where he manned watchtowers around a base near Kirkuk. He said Iraqis constantly pulled up and faked car problems so they could scout out U.S. forces.
"All we could do is watch them," he said. But if they had the ray gun, troops "could have dispersed them."

I wonder if cops are going to get those too

this is going to be so expensive that regular people do not have to worry about it. also note that it won't even go into production until 2010. hopefully we will be out of iraq by then and this gun will become obsolete.

It's a sick weapon and a sick idea... the persons involved in it's inception shoud have to die that way...

i can't wait to start hearing about all the lawsuits for it causing the people who it's used against, cancer.

the irony of that is just sickening. people are going to sue becaue a less than lethal weapon was used on them......and yet, if a lethal weapon was used on them, they'd wouldnt sue, they'd be dead!

i really dont see what is sick about that it is a non lethal pain free weapon that will make people drop a gun.

HA! Thats just what I was thinking too!

lol you can't take it word for word... i mean one of those sites says it's giong to be in iraq next year, and the other says it won't even begin production until 2010, which is three years from now...
and personally, i dunno about you but if something is making me hot enough to feel like i'm about to burst in flames, it's painful... you can't very well stick your head in a microwave, but put a lighter to your shirt that's against your skin... and wait til it's just about to light on fire, and tell me it isn't painful... and now it's this... what kinda weapons will be next? deadly or non-deadly...
btw, "it's been reported that participants were told to remove eyeglasses and contact lenses to protect their eyes, and take any coins or other metal objects out of their pockets to keep "hot spots" from developing on their skin." do you think when it's actually being used and not tested they're going to get on a loudhorn and say "take off your glasses and contacts and get rid of all metal objects so we can microwave you!" lol... no?
and personally i feel rubber bullets, pepper-ball guns, mace/pepper sprays, teargas and the like are more than enough to disperse crowds, which is what this is supposed to be designed for... i don't really believe they're developing these types of things for just more options.. i don't honestly know what to make of it yet... but it seems like the military is trying to develop new weapons, when they're not even needed. bleh, now this sounds like a conspiracy theory..

i remember hearing them working on this ray gun for ages now. I don't think it's a bad idea. It's either this or shoot them. I say shoot them, but this should at least make some of the hippies a little happier. Prolly not, the dems will allways find something to bitch about, but it's safer than a ball of metal getting pushed through peoples bodies. At least thats my :twocents:

How much and I'll taek 2. :D
All I know, is that by 2010, WW3 will be approching us, and these ray guns will be used for defense. We will see these in years to come as this war will rage on.
The US can either keep trying to control another land and continue to lose lives, or, they can what they did with Vietnam and blow it all to hell, then leave because they couldn't win. Either way, Bush fucked up and should be set on fire to join his buddy Hitler in hell.

For sure, if this thing is put into production in 2010 we'll be seeing it on the streets in 2011, it would seem. Why was this invented? I think that 130 degree heat is uncomparable, also 1/64th of skin is bs , a microwave cooks food from 130-160 degrees instantly.. and they say it penetrates 2 inches of skin? I hate the us government more than ever, making weapons that cook humans.. the fall of are society is near.. the end.thanks for the post slipknot, great information.
We should all just live in harmony ,no war,or ignorance against other's opinions,or facts for that matter..education is one thing but.it's out of control.
I think this guy knows what it's about, somewhat. take it easy everybody.
