You don't need to. Most THC is absorbed by the lungs immediately. After three seconds, THC absorption is too minimal to make a difference. The harm to your lungs, however, is not.
There's a graph floating around on this site from a NORML/MAPS test that shows this. I don't have it on my pc, but I'll look for it if you want.
I usually take a deep hit, grab another small breath, hold for up to 10 seconds, and blow it out.
I really don't care about the harm to my lungs, as I don't smoke a whole lot. Not even a regular weekend smoker.
If I'm smoking alone I usually hold it in for five seconds but if I'm with friends I will hold it in until it comes back to me.

I usually take a hit, hold it for a few seconds, then finish filling my lungs with one more hit, and hold for another 5 seconds or so. So overall, 10 seconds or so.
Doesn't hurt my lungs one bit either, because if it did, I probably wouldn't do it.
About 4-6 seconds. That's really as long as you need.
i am thinking the people that hold it in for long periods of time are either thinking they are gonna absorb twice the amount as only holdin it for a few seconds or its a macho thing. everytime i see someone doing the hold in and choke thing on purpose im thinking, what a douche, in my head. most of the effect u will have from holding it in is from oxygen deprevation and instead of oxygen u got smoke,but damn right thats gonna make the smoker lightheaded and add to the high effect tho.definetly more likely to lead to chronic cough. ya dig? :stoned: .

Inhale hold for half a second exhale. The longer you hold the more carcinogens your lungs take on, you get minimal extra THC from holding. In the end holding does MUCH MORE harm than good.
think about this, THC is absorbed instantly in the lungs right? what about all the smoke in your lungs that doesn't actually touch your lungs before you blow it out prematurely? smoke needs quite a few seconds to actually circulate through your lungs, so holding in hits is necessary.
I usually hold mine in for at least 5 good seconds or more.
let's see, I inhale, pause, and then exhale. Occasionally taking the time to blow smoke in the dog's ear, or make smoke rings... But usually I'd say 3-4 secs tops.
i usually in hale and exhale with in 3 seconds my lungs cant hold in this much smoke for 2 long
i only inhale for about 3 seconds and blow out a stream THC gets disolved in the lungs within that time.
5 seconds at the most. When I was younger I would try to hold it in as long as I could, but it didn't get me any more stoned, it just made me a little dizzy from lack of oxygen to the brain.
I've found that many small hits work better than a few enormous ones, too. Your lungs can only absorb so much, so when you take really big hits, you're in effect just wasting your smoke. ;)

iv heard holdin it for 6seconds is the best. but it all depends on wat kinda bowl i pack and how it hits me. sometimes i can hold it for the 6 seconds but other bowls jus fuck me and i gotta blow it out right away but really ur still gettin stoned either way. and coughing even helps ur highness(advice from Snoop Dogg):D

Any hit after 5 seconds or so is pretty pointless. You don;t get more high.
i dont know if this really counts but my goal to make a weed hit good is if i cough, and i hold my tokes in for about 5 seconds dont really need to any longer SALVIA oin the other hand you should hold it in for longer, about 10-15 seconds any longeer will just give you lung damage

When I try to hold in my hit, I'll exhale and then I'll gag up smoke somehow.
Kinda gross.
Thats why I just rip the blunt, do the cloud (or ghost inhale) and exhale.
I usually hold my hits in for a long time, if this is true, i might have to stop though.
Normally I hold it in 4 seconds give or take. It's not like I time it or anything...
As far as cutting off oxygen to your brain, I enjoy holding my breath untill I get light-headed and fall over, Ok? :D
