I was just sitting here and wondering what do you guys like to do and what has been proven to be the most successful. I sometimes read people having '3/6' or '4/5' seeds germinate. But as for me every seed I germinated sprouted using the paper towel method. Of course those seeds never got far because I never had the proper materials... Maybe in the future I'll get some b.s. seeds that don't germinate lol. What about you all?
i just fill up a pot about half an inch with damp soil, put the seeds in, then put another 1/2 or 1/4 of damp soil on top, then wrap it with cling film, (poke a few holes in it too) so it wont dry out, put it on a heat-mat and wait a day or two... its very easy and simple, and you usually dont run the risk of getting them too wet, or too dry...:)
Ive always used the paper towel method.. the only reason is I can see if they've germinated and dont go digging them up..
directly in warm soil either in peat pots or a flowerbox. Water, clingwrap and set in a warm location (radiator or the back of the fridge)

Also, I plant the seeds on the full moon. The present grow was seeded on Saturday evening, 11/4 with the full moon on Sunday 11/5. The seeds started to pop on Sunday evening, 24 hours after planting them. I had to thin on 11/9 <G>.

Rapid Rooters. Wouldn't be caught without them. So far the rate I have had with them is 100% germination. Except once. The seed fell out of thing but I didn't notice. I found it across the floor like 2 weeks later, lol.
I always plant directly into the soil (half inch below surface and after the soil is warmed up using hot tap water for shorter germ time) and in the pot they will grow in until sexed. I've always been a firm believer in the least amount of seed handling the better, especially when it involves the fragile root system of seedlings.

i used all kinda methods..now i use the paper towl method.

i get the half pint water bottles and pour 3/4s out. drop the seeds in and keep them warm. seems to work pretty well for me.
paper towel method, simple an works so well ive never felt the need to do it any other way:)
Yah I just do a bit of water in a cup an don let it dry out...when the seed cracks, plant just below a small amount of dirt, few grains to cover...and viola I am a happy girl in a few days....BQuote:

i just stick with what i know and thats jiffy pellets or peat pots as some of u call them. i always get 100% germ rate with them but it's a case of prefrence with every one i'll just stick with what works best for me

paper towel for known headies, straight to soil for the bagseeds. paper towel has always been my preffered method of germination...

im about to start growin within this next month, i mean hopefully i dont get caught lol but im gunna use the paper towel method
actually...it goes sprout with a taproot... a seedling is rooted and ready for veg. I like your rebel spirit, "AD", but I can tell you from experience...the rule you break today and get away with...Will bite you in the butt one day...probably right in the middle of flower...LOL peace

plus, when my plants get big i dont handle their roots, IMO seedlings are easier to handle, when they are bigger you can hear the rootballs go RIIIIP!!!!

I don't like to leave them in papertowel. It encourages fungus that kills the seeds. Next time you have seeds in papertowel for 3-4 days, smell it. Maybe its just the area in which I live. I like to toss them in a cup of water (submerged) that is in my light room ~80F. As SOON as they pop, i pull them out and plant them. They will be up in 2 days.

I still don't know why any of you would want to mess with handling...to each his own...Much easier to just start seed in a starter cube of anykind.
just for the Hell of it...There are 2 things that any commercial or expert hydro farmer will tell you: Never grow 24/0...never longer than 18/6, and
always use a starter cube. Most soil farmers use peat pellet or a peat mix of sorts...hydro farmers prefer oasis starter cubes. This is a fact. Not my Opinion, but a fact. peace
p.s. If anyone thinks I left out rockwool...I didn't; I omitted it because the same pro farmers informed me that oasis is more cost effective.
does any one know what the optimum temp is for germanation????
75-80 degrees will work for you. 78-80 is perfect with the ambient air temps 6-8 degrees cooler. and higher temps in the 80's can also promote stretching. peace
kl nice one latewood see me i just put the seeds in my jiffy pellets and put them in the airing cuboard and let it do the rest on it's own i never actually knew the right temp i guess there is always room for more learning lol
Warm Temperatures are best for Germination, 80 F is ideal, best way for fast pop is paper towels above and beneath the seed, wet with warm water, place this on a dinner plate and cover with a "non-seethru" kitchen bowl and throw it under ure lamp, will pop in no time

Had best germination success with jiffy peat pellets from garden center. Rockwool starters and paper towel did not work but no the best. When you have 10 or so beans and you want to be sure jiffys work best (for me). I use them with a low height humidity dome and RO water (not a cloning dome). I use germ heat mat and keep it in warm area. Crack hood once they come up and remove once they show green day 5-6. I use 400w mh at 3-4 feet or so once I remove the dome. Transplant soon after roots show on peat. Do not over water! Water once a week lightly unless peat is light brown then more water. Best of luck!! :thumbsup:
