How bad is marijuana, really?
Okay, I have a few health questions for those who know a little more about weed than I myself do.
The longer you hold in the smoke, the more harmful to your lungs, obviously. However, I've heard that holding it in won't get you significantly higher than releasing it a few seconds after you inhale it, thus saving your lungs a lot of trouble. True or false?
Does it matter how often you smoke, or the quantity smoked? What I mean is this. Will taking 6 hits of whatever in one sitting be equal in lung damage to taking a single hit of the same stuff every day for six days?
Lastly, its obvious that smoking more potent stuff gets you much higher. Now what about the effects on the lungs? Will more potent stuff be more damaging per hit than less potent stuff, or is the difference insignificant?
Thanks in advance guys.

Well, I got no research to back this up, but holding it longer doesn't get ya' higher.
If anything, it deprives your brain from oxygen so you might get a light-headed/placebo effect and think you're more high.
More potent weed shouldn't do more damage to your lungs, its an increase in THC, not tar.
Don't worry too much about lung damage, weed won't give you lung cancer, its been proven there is no connection between weed and lung cancer. As for other stuff related to lungs, I don't know. I'm not too worried though, so many people smoke so much more than me and don't seem to have terrible lungs.
-

Don't hold your hits in any longer than a few seconds. Most of the THC is absorbed instantly.
I'm not sure. If pressed I would say that smoking a large amount in a single session as opposed to spreading it out over several days would be slightly more harmful to your lungs, because cannabis is a bronchial dilator, meaning that it opens up the alveoli in your lungs, which may allow tars and carcinogens from the smoke to get in deeper.
Honestly, though, you really shouldn't worry about lung damage from smoking weed unless you're a heavy everyday smoker like me, which I'm assuming you're not. Cannabis smoke, especially when filtered through water (get a bong) is relatively mild.
High-quality weed, dried and cured well, is a much smoother, not to mention tastier smoke than schwag. Plus, of course, you'll have to smoke a lot less to get much higher.
I hope that was helpful.

MJ smoke contains tar and carbon-monoxide and 108 other chemicals. Get a vaporizer if your concerned about health issues and want to continue using for a long time. A water pipe won't actually help filter out the harmful stuff. Check out the MAPS/NORML study on vaporizers and water pipes. Surprisingly, water pipes can be more harmful than joints. I can finally breath easy after 17 years of smoking....thanks to the vape!

same here. vaporizing gives me a better high too. I dont get stupid unless i vape ALOT. which i usually do. lol

I've toked for 40 years- my lungs were a mess. It took just 2 weeks after getting a vaporizer for them to be clear. No morning cough! If you are worried about your health, vaporizing is the way to go! Plus, vaping doesn't have that tell-tale pot smell. In fact, there's almost NO smell. The pot is still there after vaping (unlike smoking), and it makes passable brownies. To be honest, they are not as good as if you had used bud, but they get you quite pleasantly high. So, you get to get high twice on the same weed. Get a vaporizer! I got a little Vapor Brothers after doing a bit of research. I finally bought from discountworldonline.com I got a receipt, which I expected and then a notice stating it had been shipped about 48 hours after my order (I was surprised at the fast service- I expected about 4 days to ship it). Arrived in the mail about a week after I ordered (there was a Sunday in there, too). Always a bit paranoid about chemicals, I ran it empty at high for an hour. Vaping some of my homegrown for the first time was heavenly!

The more potent cannabis strains are easier on the lungs than schwag because you dont require as much to get the desired effect, therefore less smoke is inhaled. Another point I would like to make is that I dont care what kind of studies have been done on deeply inhaling and holding in marijuana smoke but i know from personal experience that if I hold it in for 3 seconds i get high, but if I hold it for say....10 seconds, I get tore the fuck up! If your not holding it in you might as well not be inhaling because you are basically wasting the bud. Also there is a little saying you should keep in mind. "Everything is okay in moderation" Too much of anything is bad for you. I wouldnt advise anyone to do it every day.
-

I knew a kid a long time ago that used to hold it in until he almost passed out. He had to hold his nose to keep from exhaling. He was going overboard but I got his point. I always hold it in before taking that slow exhale. I agree that it makes a big difference.
By the way, I heard later that the kid died. He was young and I think he died from harder drugs.

Anyways, there is a little saying you should keep in mind about the effects on your health: "Everything is okay if done in moderation" Too much of anything is bad for you. I wouldn't advise anyone to do it daily because then it becomes more than just a hobby, it becomes a ritual which turns into a bad habit. As for vaporizing I just don't think its very traditional. That's just me though. I guess you can call me old fashioned.

I suggest buying 1/4 when you first start out, and eventually smoke some of it everyday. It will prepare you and help you understand how you personally react to any mental cravings.
Now, heres a question. In this very thread we have a post stating there are 108+ chemicals in marijuana. And we also have someone state that THC (notice, only THC) is almost completely absorbed within the first few seconds.
But what about the other chemicals? The other Active cannabinoids?
When you smoke resin, it gets you high right? (I know it gets me high).
So why wouldn't that extra smoke get you higher?
I'm not saying it DOES, I really dont know, but noone ever has an answer for this question...

In a study of 64000 people researchers found no direct link between cannabis and any form of cancer, including lung cancer.
It was recently proven cannabis is not a gateway drug, which we all new, but the close minded pricks didnt.
Cannabis can keep healthy cells alive longer.
Cannabis kills free radicals [which you dont want --- cancer causing]
Holding hit's does not get you higher. 95% of THC is abosrbed instantly, a natural breath is about 3 seconds, so if you blow it out naturally you can be sure that there is almost nil phycoactive chemicals in your lungs.
Vapes are the way to go for the healthest way apart from eating to get high. Although they arnt my fave method, they are good. But they're a personal thing, not something to smoke out of in a circle of friends.
Cannabis can be medicinally valuable. I have a bad back [broke it a few months ago, well broke 2 or 3 vertibrea] a bad knee [cartialage problem, had it since i was about 13] and if i dont smoke i get such bad head aches it can make me black out.
Cannabis helps me with all of these things, and i dont get paranoid, AND, i no longer suffer from short term memory loss.
Obviously, they're has to be some bad things about cannabis, but trust me when i say it is pretty damn safe.
The only bad things people really suffer from is a bit of a cough, short term memory loss [which isnt displayed in all people] paranoia is a common one, but you'll find this happens more with sativa strains, not really with the indicas, which are the ones with real medicinal value as they are commonly alot stronger.
Also it can increase the heart rate, but as long as your healthy that's a good thing. All the time your hearts beating your getting more blood to your brain, keeping that healthy and it'll keep your artery's and veins in good nick.
Anyway, research studies that arnt biased and you'll be good to go.
But cannabis is pretty much safe, and in reality, it isnt actually a drug. Peolpe take what the government say as fact, as though thats how it is. Just because they say something is a drug, doesnt mean it is.

LIP i know i've read that post b4. i bet ya got it saved. he he
another interesting study in cuba found significantly lower rates of cancer in people who smoked cannabis and ciggs. VS people who just smoked ciggs.
interesting
As well who ever said cannabis containns 108+ chemicals. for 1 its higher more like 400+ and the word chemical dosn't mean anything.
Chemical dosn't mean bad. water is considered a chemical in the lab, (everything is) it just means substance.
all i'm saying is that having chemicsals isn't bad. it dosn't mean anything.

around this time last year my sister was picking me up from school to go home for christmas break and she told me she had a really bad headache all day and had taken a lot of pills trying to get rid of it and nothing was working. i had some weed at the time so i was smoking it in her car and i offered her some(she very rarely smokes) and she accepted. about ten minutes later she told me her headache was totally gone. this really has nothing to do with the thread but it was one of the only time i had actually seen with my own eyes the medicinal power in effect

They also make claims that cannabis contributes to schizophrenia in adolescents...
Perhaps this is because schizophrenia symptoms present in late teens, early twenties- same as the peak use of cannabis.
Personally, I don't believe there is any correlation between schizophrenic symptoms worsening and smoking cannabis...
As much as I am embarassed to admit it, I have disorganized schizophrenia (memory is horrible, I can be very apathetic, unmotivated, I take long walks that lead to nowhere, ect. Think early Syd Barrett.) I have found that when I smoke, my memory is roughly the same, if not better, I sleep better, I am more motivated, and I actually have more emotion than if I'm sober.
This plant has done more for me than the numbing, mind-dulling medications they prescribe me (which I have discontinued). Although this helps, it's a lifelong progressive situation, and cannabis helps me make the best of it.

I completely agree. In 1 study it showed [in those particular results] that cannabis DOESNT cause any mental health issue, but in some cases can make it apparent, and becuase it hasnt been apparant before the weed, they blame the weed.
But no, i dont belive cannabis has any chemcial in it that can cause any mental health issue.

I don't understand how it COULDN'T help... Cannabis releases tons of seratonin in the brain, as well as prolactin, both of which are mood-enhancing neurotransmitters. Schizophrenics usually have a lack of seratonin, as well as prolactin; seratonin levels are decreased, but prolactin levels are normal in depression.
Breastfeeding produces roughly the same amount of those chemicals in a buzzed state, so why don't they correlate breastfeeding to schizophrenia? Because it's legal!

Ever evaporated bongwater and smoked what was there? It sure as hell won't get you high. THC does not smell bad and is not water soluble. I really don't understand how it can be said that the carcinogens in the smoke are less water soluble than THC. To hell with the tars, what about the carcinogens?? All smoke has them. I find myself very frustrated with that report on water pipes being that based upon first-hand experience with them and as an avid user of them for well over twenty-plus years, that it was proven long ago that cancer-causing carcinogens are all universally water soluble for cancer itself must be triggered by these carcinogens which would have to exist in our bodies which are 90% water.
The only mention of anything was about tars which themselves cause emphysema and COPD and not cancer. And to say that THC is in any respect water soluble just really sends my head a'scratching as to how an oil and water can mix to the point of forming a solution. And if you've ever seen a ripened plant catch a late summer rainshower, you'd notice that the THC glands/resins are totally left intact. Oil and water no water what do not mix due to their polarity.
But alas, I digress.....

Actually thats incorrect!!
The brains natural cannabinoid is called "anandamide" and it works in dopamine receptors.
THC and the other cannabinoids enter the brain and bind with the receptors that are normally binded by anandamide. THC (and others) sit in the receptors much longer in the receptor (anandamide breaks off in less than a second) .... thus THC causes a rapid build up of dopamine.......which causes the pleasurable feelings with being high. Eventually THC gets cleaved and the high wears off (thats why no one has ever died from weed).
Now if someone is more prone to schizophrenia this increase in dopamine might trigger schizophrenia to appear (at least temporarily) and if other neurotransmitters are also out of wack schizophrenia might develop when the person stops using as well. This is because schizophrenia is a malfunction of dopamine control in the brain (too much dopamine) and has nothing to do with serotonin (serotonin is linked to depression, manic and bipolar disorders).

With vaping... im not sure. But personally i'd only ever hold anything down there for a few seconds at most.
I'd assume that the THC and cannabinoids in vapour are abosrbed as quickly as smoke, so i wouldnt have thought it would ne necessary.
But concidering vaping is NOT smoke, it'd be safer to hold it in, thats for sure.
But as far as smoking goes... NEVER hold your hits, no point...
Some people will argue this isnt true, however they're just in denial or they like the feeling of oxygen depravation... cos there sure as hell not getting any more THC... concidering it's already been abosrbed.

If you can, put aside a little money for a vaporizer. It will make any tar problems go away and the experience is generally much more pleasant.
