Radio Hoax Exposes Anti-Muslim Sentiment in U.S.

WASHINGTON (Dec. 1) -- When radio host Jerry Klein suggested that all Muslims in the United States should be identified with a crescent-shape tattoo or a distinctive arm band, the phone lines jammed instantly.

Like the president of Iran said, about christains, and he ment it


The first caller to the station in Washington said that Klein must be "off his rocker." The second congratulated him and added: "Not only do you tattoo them in the middle of their forehead but you ship them out of this country ... they are here to kill us."


Another said that tattoos, armbands and other identifying markers such as crescent marks on driver's licenses, passports and birth certificates did not go far enough. "What good is identifying them?" he asked. "You have to set up encampments like during World War Two with the Japanese and Germans."

At the end of the one-hour show, rich with arguments on why visual identification of "the threat in our midst" would alleviate the public's fears, Klein revealed that he had staged a hoax. It drew out reactions that are not uncommon in post-9/11 America.


"I can't believe any of you are sick enough to have agreed for one second with anything I said," he told his audience on the AM station 630 WMAL, which covers Washington, Northern Virginia and Maryland.

"For me to suggest to tattoo marks on people's bodies, have them wear armbands, put a crescent moon on their driver's license on their passport or birth certificate is disgusting. It's beyond disgusting.

"Because basically what you just did was show me how the German people allowed what happened to the Jews to happen ... We need to separate them, we need to tattoo their arms, we need to make them wear the yellow Star of David, we need to put them in concentration camps, we basically just need to kill them all because they are dangerous."

The show aired on November 26, the Sunday after the Thanksgiving holiday, and Klein said in an interview afterwards he had been surprised by the response.

"The switchboard went from empty to totally jammed within minutes," said Klein. "There were plenty of callers angry with me, but there were plenty who agreed."

Those in agreement are not a fringe minority.

I agree with you on one point though, they do need to police their own. You always hear about fringe groups who have been recruiting people at the local mosques. Surely they can't be that secret. You'd think that some of the good Muslims would report this type of thing to the authorities. I take it you don't live in an area with a lot of Muslims. The San Fran Bay Area does have a pretty large Muslim population and I can say that very, very few women wear the full burkah (although I have seen some and will admit the last time I was in a store and saw one with the full Taliban style, even covering the eyes, burkah I made myself scarce pretty quickly). Most will wear the head scarf at most, but a lot don't even wear that. Maybe they're just liberated Muslims, if that's possible.

I don't have any that are close friends and haven't really spent a lot of time discussing issues with my parents neighbors. I do know that after 9/11 they made a point of going around, to the folks they knew in the neighborhood, to let people knew that they condemned the act and also know that they supported our going after the Taliban and Al Qeada in Afghanistan.

As for voter fraud, I never thought it was voter fraud when Bush got elected. Just part of our fucked up electoral system. Ya gotta admit though, having the decision come down to a few votes in a state where the "winner's" brother is the governer is bound to raise a few eyebrows.

Holy hell Bong, that actually was a simple question that you blew out of proportion. I don't know what your deal is but you've consistantly tried to start arguments with me even where there are none. Did you wonder why I never bothered continuing our last debate? I know you think it's because I was so thoroughly outsmarted by you, but here's a more accurate view: The original post I made, which you agreed with, was that I hate it when people say ALL muslims are terrorists. You then agreed that they're all not terrorists, claiming 10% to be the number, then brought up argument after agument against me that had NOTHING TO DO with what I said, and no relation to anything. Yep, I question lines of reasoning, I'll debate what I see as fallable logic, and that's called intellectual discussion; it's not something exclusive to people who are smart, just people who ask questions. If I agreed with you, you would undoubtedly think I was just some smart fellow. But becuase I offer an argument from another side of the spectrum you percieve it as intellectual arrogance, rather than the obvious concept that somebody could arive at conclusions other than your own by taking logical steps (not just "crazy liberalism").

Think about it, we fuck with them, they fuck with us, we fuck with them, they fuck with us....it's a never ending cycle that's been going on for hundreds, no thousands, of years. Yes, they want to convert by the sword, but isn't that the same thing we're doing. "Praise Allah, you'll be a Muslim even if we have to kill you to do it" . "God Bless America, you'll be a democracy even if we have to bomb the shit out of you to make it happen". Seriously Bong, is there really any difference in the two statements? "Yes" you say? Why? Because we're right and they're wrong? Don't you think they think the same thing too?

Sometimes the better person is the one who simply say's "fuck it, I'm tired of this crap" and walks away. If we're really the better ones, the ones who really are right, maybe it's time for us to do it too. It's like we're poking a stick at a barking dog behind a fence.
