Tubgirls! (and not THAT tubgirl!)

Well, here's the start of new grow. I've decided to start now, and maybe have something to smoke in February. I was intrigued by the pics of plants in tubs in Peace Turtle's pots thread. So, here's my attempt for tubgirls, using my "midget cabbage x" seeds.

I'm going to use a 10gal tote, and do 5 plants. :·: As you can see, my cat is very interested.

I used a pair of scissors to cut 8 ~0.5"/1.5cm drainage holes. Add the dirt I have laying around loose. You can see that at least one of the earthworms survived from the aborted midget grow (both males).

Tamp it down a little, and I see right away that I'm going to need about 3" more dirt. I'm going to sprout in tub, and I want the dirt level to be ~0.25"/1cm from lip when they sprout. It will sink and I can top off.

I harvested what's left of George, cleaned the dirt, and filled up the tub. I put 2 toilet paper roll tubes into the dirt to increase air circulation to the bottom, and also to water through. These will "crumple" & disintigrate within a few weeks. I also found 2 more worms.

The beans. These are all "midget cabbage x" seeds, allegedly. Dunno. The guy said they all came from the same bag.

Popped in to the 2nd knuckle, and watered. Now we wait.

2 weeks later (11/29), after various sprouts, cat kills, & culls:

Here are the tubgirls in all their glory.

T.2: You can really see the dense secondary growth making the plant look more & more like a head of cabbage. Hence the name "Midget Cabbage X".

T.4: There's a little burn on the 1st leaf from me setting a light down on the plant. Cosmetic damage only. I've learnd long ago that cosmetic damage does not affect plant performance.

T.5-T.7: AKA The Bird, The Canoe, & The Runt (pic of runt on next post)

The Runt

I peeked in the closet just a few moments ago, and I found another sprout!? (T.6) It came out about 1/3 of the way between T.2 & T.4, close to the tub wall. Not an area where I remember putting a seed. Mebbe an unsprouted replacement that got shifted during earth moving when I moved plants around? Anyway, it's a very pale yellow, as though it had sat under the dirt growing a while before it poked its' head out. Prolly gonna keep her for laughs. Pics tomorrow morning.

T.2 is showing quite a few "mutant" leaves, such as 4 fingered, malformed baby-fingers, "twirlys", etc. (What are some short-height high-mutant strains?) Also started showing tertiary growth yesterday. 5.5" tall, throwing her 7th set of primaries. Branches well formed, longest is 2.125". She looks like a topiary tree. I'm in love all over again. (16 days old)

T.4 is 2" tall, has 3rd set of primaries out, and secondary growth starting at main nodes. (8 days old)

T.5-T.7 varying between 0.5" & 1" tall, all have 2nd set of primaries out, w/3rd set clearly visible. I think 3rd set will be out by the time I take pics tomorrow. No secondary growth showing yet. (6 days old)

The tubgirls are looking supremely happy. I need to get a flystrip though. Since introducing worms and moving into the closet, my gnat population has skyrocketed. I've always had gnats, since I grow in soil, but they're really bad (or really noticeable) in the closet. You can also see that the cardboard tubes are now little more than depressions/soft spots in the soil.

T.2 - the oldest of the lot. Just look at that dense canopy of growth! She still only 5.75" tall, and is now wider than she is tall. Is it only me that is reminded of a head of cabbage? Mmmm... I love the short, wide girls... (plants too!)

I peeled back the top so you can see the lushness inside. There's branches growing on the branches already.

T.4 is also starting to come into her own. The secondarys are forming: first branches already 2mm long.

T.5-T.7: The Bird, The Canoe, & The Runt. By next week, we won't be able to tell why I named them thusly. Hopefully.

Finally got the digicam pic of the growcloset.

I decided to flood the girls today, because I stuck a chopstick all the way down, and only the bottom 1" was dampish. So off to the bathtub - not bfore some pics! - and 3 gallons (12L) in before anything started coming out the bottom. Also gave 'em a good mist/rinse.

T.2 - 3 weeks old: sprouted 11.15... Still looks bushy after taking off 3 lower sets of fan leaves. You can see the branch development that's going to go so well with the screen. (I may not even need a screen!)

T.4 - 13 days old: sprouted 11.23... Doing her thing. Getting fat.

T.5 (The Bird) - 11 days old: sprouted 11.25... Doing fine.

T.6 (The Canoe) - 11 days old: sprouted 11.25... Still showing the "nute burn" thing, but that's slowing down. Woo hoo!

T.7 (The Runt) - 11 days old: sprouted 11.25... Still a runt, and the most "cabbage-like" of the group. I have a theory. Both previous plants were boys, and were extremely "cabbagey" in appearance. I'm thinking this might be an early indicator for this particular strain. But who knows? I'm prolly wrong.

Just curious... what's the advantage of growing in tubs rather than pots?

No real advantage other than taking up less space: the tub fits in my closet easier than 5 buckets would - although 5 buckets would fit in there just as well.

Lots of room for the worms to play in. But again, a worm isnt going to notice the difference between a 5 gal bucket and a 10 gal tub.

Only reason I did it was I saw a pic of some tubs w/2 plants per, and I liked the look. The seeds that I had multiples of were this short, dense cabbage thing. So, the tubgirl project was born. Is kinda fun, eh?

I have a whole slew (43) of seeds from another indica strain that I'm trying out in a small sidegrow. Depending on how the trial plants run, I may do the tub thing again with those.

I put the screen onto the tub. It sits 8" above tub rim. It was rolled, so what I thought was 1" x 2" mesh is actually 2" square mesh. I'm thinking this might be a bit large(What do you think?), so I did not make permanent, only semi. I also have a chunk left over to where I could make a section of 1" square mesh in the middle of the 2" mesh.

You can see that T.2 is already pressed up against it. I'm plan on helping each branch go through it's own hole, which would ensure a separation of at least 2" between stems.

The cage makes it awkward to get in and out of the the closet. Already ripped the mylar. This means the branches will also be disturbed as the cage bangs into the door jamb, walls, etc. Will this be a problem? (other than being careful for "guillotine")

Here are the tubgirls as they came out this morning. According to "the plan", this is how I envision the stem placement through the screen. I am also considering throwing into bud on the Solstice (New Moon) instead of Jan 1st.

A quick look at the some of the trunks in the Short Forest.

T.2 is poking 4 branches through the screen. Almost 4 weeks old.

T.4 is almost at the screen.

T.5 - The Bird. Can't even tell why I named it that anymore. T5-T.7 are all 2 weeks old.

T.6 - The Canoe. The "nute burn" thing is still going on, but I am far from worried about it anymore. Seems to be doing fine.

T.7 - The Runt. I dunno If this one is gonna reach the screen by the time bud comes. You can see the "nute burn" on T.6, too.

It's a girl!

Here's the Tubgirls as they came out this morning. Including a manorrah (SP?) for those of the hebrew faith. Happy Hannukah!

T.2 is budding away.

T.4 showed a hair a few days ago, then nothing. Now I'm seeing nubs, and thinking I may have been mistaken, and T.4 is a boy. Keeping an eye on it.

T.5 is defo a girl.

T.6 was suffering from nute burn, and then showed balls, so I killed him.

T.7 still a runt, and unsexed.

Well, I've been keeping an eye on it, and this morning I saw multi-nubs instead of single nubs. Which can mean only one thing: another boy. So now 2 for 4.

This is why I thought I could do 5 in the tub. Small taproot.

Gonna let this dry and stick it in the worm bucket. Waste not, want not.

One week into bud, and the 2 girls are doing their thing. The 3rd remains unsexed, but all I see are nubs, so I fear the worst.

T.2 & T.5, respectively.

Mmmm... T.2 looking sooo yummy already! T.5 is 10 days behind T.2, chronologically, and it shows at this stage. So it looks like I'm going to have 2 distinct harvests.

I opened the door this morning, and they're stretched bad. Here's one of the "sunflower" sticks. You can see how they pop up to the top behind the "normal" height stems. Got some growing into the lights and ballasts, too. If I raise the lights any further, I'm going to light starve the lower nodes. Side lights are in order for next grow.

T.5 is poofing away. I expect to see more development on her in the next week, as she is 10 days behind T.2

I raised one side, and added another light. So now 275W.

Well, only a minimal amount of stretch overnight, which is good. But a lot of foliage blocking light to down under, which is bad. Rather than snip leaves, I bent the ones I could out of the way, and added yet another sidelight. Which brings the total up to 300W. (303W)

I'm assuming it's ok to have a bud growing between the lights. I don't care if the leaves touch the bulb; CFLs only give spot burns at that point, and don't kill the whole leaf.

After this grow is complete, I'm going to redo the lights, with 250W on top, and 100W (mebbe 150W) in side lights.

And if/when I get enough $$ at one time to spare, HPS.

All appears to be under control now, stretch & light wise. Here's T.2, and she's just poofing away.

1. A random bud in the far right back corner.

When I bapped my arm across the bud tops to get the shot, the tops felt very solid & dense. So I gently squeezed 3 random lower popcorn nugs to get a feel for the density. Very nice!

2. A random bud up front. You can see the pink formation. I'm hoping to see more pink. I'm assuming this is a strain pheno, and not a nutritional thing.

3. This is a bud on the end of a stalk that had bapped against the ceiling 2 days ago. You can see how the pistil ends shriveled & compressed.


4. Some sticks. Aren't they pretty?

5. This is T.5, who is 10 days behind T.2, chronologically. There are a 3 branches that have poked through the screen and are budding, but it looks like a meristem cola only plant. T.2 takes up over 1/2 of the screen, T.5 barely a quarter.

Week 3.5

I love looking at my ladies... I could stare at them and drool for hours...

Today is week 4. About 4 to go by my imaginary timetable, but we all know how that works!

1 - Today's shot of the pink bud. Easilly the most beautiful bud in the grow. I stare at this bud for hours, willing it to grow...

2 & 3 - Some sticks.

4 - The far right back corner bud. This is my #2 favorite bud in the grow.

That really is cool to see nice buds like that with fluoros. Great job! They look nicer than my girls flowering for 36 days so far under a 250W HPS. :jointsmile:

1. Some of the tops. T.5 is mislabeled as T.2. What can I say? I was stoned.

2 & 3. The pink-topped bud is 18" tall. It is the 4th largest cluster, but I still think the most beautiful.

4. Attempt at dramatic lighting.

I have 6 sticks in the 18" range, another 8 or so footlongs, and quite a few little sticks & popcorn nugs scattered about. That pinky stick looks like it would be about 7-10g alone as is. Current estimate of yield is 1.5 to 2 oz trimmed & dried. Does this sound about right? Or am I over? Under? This is my first "semi-pro" grow, and my yield is already on a "whole nuthah level" than all my previous grows, so really have no clue.

Those look awesome man! They caught my buddy's eye (we're watching Weeds) and he goes "woah what's that dude?!" ... heh. keep it up! :jointsmile:

1 & 2. Puffing along. As stated earlier & elsewhere, while this is not my first grow, it is my first "semi-pro" grow with "proper" lighting & ventilation, etc. It is producing so much better and looking so much more beautiful than previous grows, I still can't believe these 2 beauties are in my closet.


3. And I found a bug stuck in the trichs again. Guess I know it'll be sticky, huh?

Yes. It can all be done w/CFLs. And done nicely; CFLs allow you bring the lights "up close & personal".

Keep in mind that CFLs work best in small spaces - like speaker cabinets, closets, garbage cans, etc. In an actual grow room, you're better off using HPS overhead with CFL sidelights.

Spectra of CFL & HPS are slightly different. CFL is ~2700K and HPS is ~2200K. Both produce the frequencies needed for bud production. Plants grown under CFL exclusively can sometimes show a "PAR defficiency", because certain frequencies are missing. This usually shows as "pinkness" in the pistils closest to the bulbs, is not harmful* to the plant, and is very pretty.

*Because the plant is an annual, not a perrenial, it doesn't matter if it gets "light rickets" the day before you kill it.
