Donnie Darko discussion thread
its about time travel. after watching it for the second time, i got a better understanding of it. (its one of those movies you need to watch more than once... kinda like fight club for some of us)
anyway, after watching it. i became quite interested in the possibilities, so i went to the library and checked out a book titled How to Build a Time Machine by: Paul Davies
it goes through all the information of time travel and what is required. its extremely interesting and i encourage anyone to check it out. its a short read.
It actually does describe how to build a time machine, but the technology isnt available to us... yet..
it requires an object to be moving the speed of light.
pull up a chair on a rainy day and check it out!

READ ABOUT JOHN TITOR

Quote:
John Titor, "The Man Whose Past is the Future", was the name used for the purported time traveller from the year 2036 who posted on several time-travel–related Internet bulletin boards during 2000/2001, making many ambiguous, but seemingly falsifiable, predictions about events in the near future and giving an account of his supposed native time period. Many proponents of Titor believe his claims may be unsubstantiated due to the complex nature of the multiple time-line theory.
Quote:
[edit] Information about his life
He was supposedly born in 1998 (as indicated in 2000 when he said he saw his 2 year old self). He is allegedly a soldier in a military group of the USA.
[edit] Predictions
The postings claimed Titor to be a serving soldier who was assigned to a government time travel project. He was supposedly sent from 2036 back to 1975 to retrieve an IBM 5100 computer which he claimed was needed to "debug" various legacy computer programs in 2036. The postings also described various future events between 2005 and 2037, including World War III (predicted for 2015) followed by two decades of recovery.
One such prediction notes the escalating conflict between Arabs and Jews as being a harbinger of World War III:
"Real disruptions in world events begin with the destabilization of the West as a result of degrading US foreign policy and consistency. [...] The Jewish population in Israel is not prepared for a true offensive war. They are prepared for the ultimate defense. Wavering western support for Israel is what gives Israel's neighbors the confidence to attack. The last resort for a defensive Israel and its offensive Arab neighbors is to use weapons of mass destruction. In the grand scheme of things, the war in the Middle East is a part of what's to come, not the cause."
Along with the prediction of World War III, another notable prediction is that of a Civil war in America, which was predicted to begin in 2004, around the time of the presidential election, and would escalate until 2008, which, according to Titor, "[is] a general date by which time everyone will realize the world they thought they were living in was over."
Another prediction was that 2004 would be the last year in which the Olympic Games would occur. This seems at odds with real-world events as the 2006 Winter Olympics began February 10, 2006. However there has been some argument as to whether the Winter Olympics was included in the prediction. Some have also speculated as to whether the predictions made by Titor were predicting only one course of the future, suggesting humans may have created an alternate future by going about things differently. This is an example of the many possible interpretations of Titor's seemingly specific predictions. According to IBM engineer Bob Dubke, Titor's statements regarding the IBM 5100 ability to emulate and debug mainframe systems were correct. This information was not publicly known when Titor made his declaration, which has led to speculation that the person posing as Titor must have been linked somehow to the development of this system. (see "Secrets of the City" in external links for more information.)
When asked about the mechanisms of the time traveling, Titor replied that he was no engineer. When asked to provide a better picture of his time machine he replied that he wasn't a photographer. When asked to use the time machine to do something paradoxical (e.g., kill his grandfather) he replied that that would only affect this universe, but not his. He appeared to imply that there were many worldlines, and his time machine could not control its outgoing destination exactly, but could return to a worldline exactly similar to his own home. (It would be a different "Worldline" but would be exactly the same in his perspective as when he left). His originating "worldline" would, in turn, receive a John Titor exactly similar to the original. Therefore, his original "worldline" would indeed receive the benefit of his mission.
There are people who wanted to know why John Titor, if he was from the future, didn't help stop the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
The "worldline" theory corresponds with a current scientific hypothesis known as the Multiverse.
[edit] Summary
These are taken from John Titor's original statements and summarised.
A Second American Civil War from 2005-2015
An event similar to the "parting of the Red Sea" will occur in 2012.
Third World War in 2015, a gradual global escalation that was ended by Russia bombing American, European and Chinese cities.
Sometime before this point (referred to as "N-Day") China forcefully annexes Japan, Korea and Taiwan.
Chemical and Biological weapons are used, and some "non-lethal" weapons turned out to be quite lethal.
Australia successfully repels a Chinese invasion.
The war kills over 3 billion people.
Post-war
Communities of survivors gather and grow around libraries and universities.
The United States splits into five regions based on various factors and differing military objectives.
The US Constitution is changed by a Constitutional Congress.
A President is elected for each of the five major areas of the US.
The powers of the union government are more defined and reside at the county and state level.
The Vice President is elected separately.
The US Capital is in Omaha, Nebraska.
Life in 2036:
Society
Military service plays a large part in day-to-day life.
Capital Punishment is still implemented.
Communities have returned to a family/community centred state, advised by elders.
Texas is Hispanicized.
Religion and Beliefs
Religion is far more personal and plays a major part in day-to-day life.
The Ten Commandments have been restored to the "10" that God gave Moses.
Sabbatarianism, or worship on Saturday is a common practice.
Technology
Wireless internet is ubiquitous.
Television and Telephony are delivered via the Web.
Books and other hard media are now distributed online and printed from local hubs.
Microsoft and Yahoo! no longer exist. Napster still distributes music via the web.
Power is not distributed over long distances. Alternate forms of generation are common, the most prevalent being solar.
Environment
The environment is heavily affected by radiation. The lack of potable water is the biggest environmental issue.
Global Warming has had little effect. Temperature is about the same although there were anomalies after the war.
Health
The birth rate is much lower, due to a high number of birth defects and stillbirths.
Mad Cow, or vCJD in humans, is a devastating public health problem.
Cures for AIDS and Cancer have not been found. Viral therapy is used for Cancer.

Maybe i'll watch that movie again, the first time i saw it i thought it was pretty stupid. I didn't know it was about time travel or any or that interesting stuff. When i watched it i was in one of those "find any flaw in the movie and laugh about it" if you know what i mean.

Donnie Darko discussion thread
Holy fucking shit! John Titor's posts are fucking interesting, even if they are fake. Damn, thinking about this is amazing, the whole thing if it is real is just amazing. 3 billion people dieing in a war in 2015? Thats weird, in one of his posts saying that to the people in his time, it will seem like he was gone for a second and he will just have aged more. That is cool thinking about that, that when he left and came here that to them it was only a second that he was gone and then he was back. Pretty interesting stuff.
-
Donnie Darko discussion thread
Ya, i pretty much believe it. Not really, It's just so cool, I WANT to believe it. WW3 here we come? I know, we should start a group of rebels so when the time comes we can defend our selves. And then we can turn into road warriors and become people like Mad Max, Yeah! :D

I have a similar viewpoint to billionfold.
The schematics and the fact about the IBM computers convinced me. And here i am telling mom we need to move to an unpopulated area with a ton of bullets and canned food, wait scratch that, some fucking goats and cows.

So he ripped the engine off the plane his mom and sister were riding in off the tangent universe, and carried it with him to the primary universe.

yeah i just watched donnie darko for the first time last night....and i really enjoyed it. It was soo damn confusing tho. Like what in the world did the little chinese girl have to do with nething....why did she wear those earmuffs? and where did the father go at the end...i must have missed that part because they threw a party ..and yeah....where was the dad. And what was the deal with the fat guy in the jumpsuit....he showed up twice i think and it was just random.
-
Donnie Darko discussion thread
The fat guy was watching The darko family (he was from the FAA) watch the directors cut, describes a lot of stuff.

This movie kicked my ass and I don't have enough time to watch it again.
SO someone explain it to me? I watched the directors cut for some insight but all I got was a bunch of psuedo philosophical bullshit ranging from religion to time travel from some British college students or whatever.
I'm confused.
-
Donnie Darko discussion thread
Okay here is how it is.
The beginning of the movie was the PRIMARY universe. He used telekinisis to rip the jet engine out of the air and land on him from the tangent universe. But he stood up and walked out, because the tangent universe would not exist if he didnt. Thus, Frank made him get out of bed. Frank was a manipulated dead. Since he was killed by Donnie in the end, he was given the power to get donny to go back and die. Donny has superpowers, time travel, elemental power(wind, earth, fire, water) and strength. Roberta sparrow checked her mail all the time because she wanted to believe her book was fiction, so she constantly checked so just in case, it wasnt. Gretchen had to die, because it was the only thing that would make donnie go back in time and get himself to die. In the primary universe, gretchin and frank had to live and DOnnie die.

I was trippin' balls when I was watching that movie already, and the point where I just lost it was when Donnie asked him who he was or something and the reply was "Do you believe in time travel?"
That's just not a response you hear every day, man.
