I get a turkey from my supermarket every year and donate it at the courtesy counter to go into the county food pantry,,,this year they refused to take it... I then went to my local food pantry and was told our freezer is full of turkey's we can't take it... I was pissed to say the least,because I know that my turkey would of made someones day happier...
I should post this in the whats wrong with our world thread...
how is a turkey gonna help someone anyway people don't need turkeys

That sucks man. Thats really awesome that you do that every year. Its too bad that you cant find somewhere that will take it. There are no other homeless shelters around you?
its a good sign that pantrys are full, that means alot of people are giving. and its the gesture and thought that counts. at least you tried. and THATS what makes the world better.
One year our garden was overflowing with potatoes. Waaayyy more than we could possibly use ourselves. After we gave away what we could to friends and family, we phoned up a food bank and asked if they would like to come collect the rest. They told us they were not interested in potato picking, but they would accept them if they were scrubbed, dried, bagged, labeled, and brought to their building between the hours of 1 and 3 pm on a Monday or Tuesday. I guess there is not much of a DEMAND for potatoes at the food bank?
The food pantry is the only place here,,, a neighbor suggested a nursing home in the area,,, Turns out My brother's friend did not have a bird so it went there...Quote:

true the pantry is full,but there is few people willing to Volunteer,I will consider the position now...

How about a homeless shelter or another place that needs food? They would be more than happy to take one.
It's a good thing they are full though, that means more people are giving, but hey, you tried though and good on you for doing so.
As for savagepossum's response, turkey=food, and unfortunatly, not everyone has a mommy and daddy to make them a nice turkey dinner, or have the money to give their family a nice turkey dinner. People need food to live, and a turkey is just that. I suggest you lay off the reefer for a while because well, you're dumb, so.
I could of gone to a homeless shelter,but it was the day before Thankgiving,this is what I do every year and i got thrown a curve ball... both shelters I know are 40 or so miles and I was not prepared for the ride...
Toys for Tots is next,,,watch them stop that too...
Skink, I think that's lovely that you persisted and found a good recipient for the bird. It is the thought that counts, and that was tremendously kind that you were so eager to give it to someone who needed it.
I donate food and money year-round to our local food pantry, but in the wintertime, I try to give money so they can buy the things they need most like baby formula and baby food. At this time of year, particularly, shelters and food banks are generally always flush with food. Everyone feels generous at holiday time, from churches to corporations. Pantries' truly needy times are the late spring and summer because that's when they get the fewest donations. If you ever have a food bank or a shelter turn your gesture away, don't take that as a personal affront. Those places operate on very limited budgets and have limited storage and freezer space. Just use that as an opportunity to find out what they truly need--and when--and try giving accordingly. And don't believe everything you hear about shelters and food pantries giving to anyone, including Mercedes-driving folks. Here in our area, they screen for need very carefully, and they have to turn away far more people than they'd like. Certainly there may be clients who occasionally drive up in nice cars, but that's because they were paid-for cars before those people's lives and financial situations hit the skids. Try volunteering at one of those places sometime and you'll see the very real need that exists.

thats fucking rediculous, those people have some dirty balls to say they wont take your turkey even though you were just trying to help someone out.
I think being in the south you have had a better experience... good Idea on asking what they do need... when people ask for a handout on the street I usually take them to a deli and buy them a meal,,,cash I hesitate...Quote:
