Pelosi Lays Out Her Cards With Murtha Bet

It's a high-testosterone move for the first female speaker-elect. Yep, "Women have cojones, too!" could be the subtext under the headline, "Pelosi Endorses Murtha for Leader." Why? Murtha's medal-decorated military past enthuses the cockles of veterans and service persons alike. The Pennsylvania conservative Democrat's pro-gun, anti-choice voting record also helps draw centrist Republicans into the Democrats' camp, while wooing progressives with his vocal opposition to the war in Iraq.

But there's a major potential hitch. The House leadership votes that take place this Thursday on the Hill are conducted in secret. Members can tell Murtha or current Minority Whip and would-be Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland that they are on either man's team. Then they can go and vote secretly however they choose. Hoyer has already locked up the support of the Blue Dog (or socially and economically conservative) Democrats, the Congressional Black Caucus, and the Hispanic Caucus.

Hill scuttlebutt holds that on a personal basis Pelosi is much closer to Murtha, although her relationship with centrist Democrat Hoyer dates back several decades to their tenures as congressional pages.

However, if Hoyer pulls off a victory, as some predict he may do Thursday, Pelosi begins her historic speakership mopping up an awfully messy faux pas. Then again, wasn't she the one who said last week that it takes a woman to clean House?

There's been a huge debt racked up for the country these past 6 years. I'm sure that the middle class will pay the lion's share of that debt via taxes, but at least this time, the wealthy will have to pay their share too.

There was once a guy who said that all those big tax breaks the past few years were just a form of welfare...for the rich. Who was the man who said that? Warren Buffet, one of the richest people on the planet. When one of the richest people on the planet says he's paying an unfairly low share of the tax burden...it's probably true. I have nothing against people becoming successful, but I do have problems when those who become successful want to become even richer by snatching money from the wallets of the middle class.

One of the two things I used to like about the Republicans was that they generally represented fiscal conservatism, a balanced budget, spending within our means. But when they got control over both branches of Congress AND the executive branch, fiscal conservatism disappeared and major deficit spending went wild. Bush has vetoed no pork at all. If I had children, I'd be ashamed to tell them that THEY are going to be the ones paying the price for all this deficit spending.

I don't know how they even keep rationalizing it, while talking about MORE tax cuts. That's like having a gigantic credit card bill and discussing decreasing your payments toward the bill. Does that help pay the bill? Hell no, that drags out the interest and makes the ultimate cost much worse. We need to revoke the tax cuts for the rich (I'm sure they can suffer along with 18k gold plated swimming pools rather than solid 24k gold swimming pools), and probably taxes need to be raised across the board, for everyone, to get our debt under control. That's the elephant in the room that no one wants to discuss, because paying debts isn't glamorous or popular. But it still has to be done.

There are two heads to every coin, Ozarks, and that's why I'm firmly against the bi-partisan system. I'd vote Democrat just because they are the most likely to share my voice, me being a Socialistic Libertarian and all. What made this country so prosperous and powerful to begin with is a strong Middle Class. Since civilization began economics has been polarized between the very rich and the very poor. Now it seems we're going back to that. The affluent want peasants to kiss their candyasses and make them even richer. They know the Middle Class would tell them to go get fucked so they turn a greedy eye towards Mexico.

That's why you're only going to get lip service paid to the immigration problem. If they are forced to actually do something about it, all the pressure is going to be put on some poor immigrants back and not where it belongs--on the business's that are hiring them. They want to build fences and send troops to the borders but not once did I hear anyone mention drying up the jobs so there's no motivation to sneak over to begin with.

They love to talk tax breaks, but when the breaks finally come, joe paycheck gets stiffed with a pittance while the wealthy rake it in. Didn't ya love that poison pill the Republicans threw in the Minimum wage increase bill? Cuts in inheritance tax (which is a good thing because that money has already been taxed), but only for the Mega-Wealthy. They wanna protect Paris Hilton's trust but somebody's gotta pay for the 11 million an hour they're spending in Iraq.

If I lived in a state where the Libertarian party rivals the Dems and Reps, I'd vote for them. If the Libertarians were the majority (or minority) party they would have scandals, corruption, pay-offs, pay-backs and all the same issues. Voting for "change" is good, but please don't be so naive as to think that these people would ride in on white horses with out sin and just fix everything.;)
