Seeds germinate fine, but no sprouts... whats am i doing wrong

I got some WW seeds via the internet.

I put 6 of them in a small covered cup of water and stored in a warm area.

Within 24 hours all 6 of them had cracked and had a white root emerging.

Planted in schultz soil (specifically for starting plants) about 1/4" deep. Watered and put under 40W flouro in 16oz cups covered with cellphane.

its been 4 days and 0/6 have sprouted.

am i being impatient or should i dig one up and see whats going on?

I know that you have cellephane, but did they dry out? Another thought, did you push them down further when you watered? I put popped seeds just below a tiny bit of dirt then watered...one I could still see top of seed...they all sprouted in a few days.

its definitely possible i put them too far down. I'm going to check on one today i guess.

another note.. why does everyone germinate in a paper towel? the cup/water method was very easy and i had a very high germination rate.... i hope this isnt why i'm not seeing sprouts

No, I didn't use the papertowel either. That isn't it.

actually i got to thinking about it and tonight will make it 4 full days they have been in soil since they germinated... maybe i just havent waited long enough

well i get home and i'm greeted by a 1 - 1.5" sprout!

as for my germination method.. i just put the seeds in a small plastic cup with water, put cellaphane over them, and actually put them in my pc case. this provides a nice dark warm place... within 12 hours 4 of the 6 seeds had split and had a root showing... the others germinated the next day.

so now i guess i just leave it be under the flourescents? you guys mist with water when this small to improve strength or not?

i'm concenerned im going to over or underwater

so im concerned.. the sprout stem goes straight up for like halfa n inch, but then the "top" goes out to a 90 degree angle just above the soil.. looks like it might falll over or be resting on the soil soon

any idea?

how close is the fluorescent lighting?
get it close as possible without possibility of burning (remember that plants grow lol)
theyll stretch for the light is it isnt close enough, also, to fix the stretching you have just build up dirt around the stem or tie it/ support it with something

its about 3 inches away... sprout isnt looking so good this morning...

also on top of the stem its still a pod... no flowers or anything.. doesnt look any different than 10-12 hours ago

:rasta:some plants take alot longer to grow than others it's just a waiting game and as for the one bending over like ark said try building some dirt round it or tie it up but not too tight it needs to be lose other wise you'll strangel it. can i ask dont no one use propagators any more i still use mine and in 24 hrs all my seeds are germanated and there always strong little buggers lol any way man i hope it all goes ok for you keep us all updated

If you think you can pull off the shell of the seed without hurting the leaves inside by all means do it. If you can't help but damage it, then let nature take it's course, the leaves will eventually push the seed shell off. Don't be surprised that the leaves inside will be BRIGHT yellow/green...they haven't had any light yet to turn green. And congrats on your sprout...btw, I put my flourescents within an inch or two of the top of the plants. THat will stop stretching. S

Get the fluo as close as possible, without it touching the plant, and without the tops of the seedling reaching above 75F.

Like someone else said, if you can take the seed shell off without harming the plant, go for it, but if its still connected to the cotyledons, leave it.

got home today, plant looks exactly the same...

there isnt a seed still on the plant, but there two "flowers" at the top of the tiny sprout are still just barely seperated.. its like they are still together, maybe 1cm apart.. plant doesnt look any bigger than it did 24 hours ago

any ideas?

i can post a pick but its so small its going to be hard to see anything

i have four four feet flouros... 40 watt
two of them are warm white (3000k) and two are specifcally made for plant growing.

I realize now that that the cool white is optimal for the veg growth stage, so i plan to change to those bulbs before long. i figure while the plant is so small the warm white is sufficient

Actually, I have read (and decided to use) the GE Daylight Eco-LUX 40w 6500k 3050 lumens are really good for veg...and so far I have had good results http://boards.cannabis.com/showthread.php?t=89003 (look at week -8dys- pic) except my noob mistakes of course. I only mention it because you said you may replace the warm...if you do a search, a few people have mentioned good results. Other than that, I'll be watching your grow!! ours seem like they will be somewhat similar. ie mine is bagseed

Sounds kind of like damping off to me. Not overwatering are you?

i havent watered since they were planted 5 days ago, but i did get the soil very damp before planting.. im sure this is the prob, but probably not much i can do now. (i had cellaphane over until the sprout, so maybe it will dry out faster now)

the 16oz cup they are in has plenty of drain holes, but i did the finger check and its very damp at the bottom

Well I don't think the roots have reached the bottom in five days but when I had damping off problems with some seedlings it was more a question of good soil and drainage....mine sucked at both--the poor drainage because of the poor soil(too compact and clay-like) even tho I had alot of drainage holes also.

p.s. the soil im using is "Scotts Potting Soil for Seed Starting" It also says Fast-Rooting formula with phosphorus

That sounds good to me although I'm not very knowledgable about soil. I may not want to know the answer to this but how did you get your finger into the bottom of a 16oz cup filled with soil?

i couldnt get to the VERY bottom, but if i water from the top and feel a lot of moisture only a few inches down, i'm sure its not mysteriously dry at the bottom ;-)

ok so here's the latest.. last night after determining it was way too wet at the bottom of the cup, i used a small metal rod i had to poke several deep holes for aeration. It seems to have done the trick because this morning the sprout is now standing straight up. It still hasnt grown any more, and the two original leaves are still only about 1cm apart, but at least its not flopped over anymore.

well im home.. plant still standing straight up on its own.. it is no bigger though

leaves and stalk are green so i guess its ok.. the two "leaves" are still pretty much touching and havent seperated.. in the last 2 days it hasnt grown at all... i guess we'll see...

Give some time...it has to dry out somewhat.....

looks alright tonight... not much bigger but the two flowers are finally seperating.. ive got a digital cam if i could just find the cable :-/

i had it under a warm white 3000K light flouro but today bought a 6500K 40watt ~ 150watt CFL

looks better already.. wonder if that 3000K wasnt enough light (or right spectrum) for the little thing?

Don't know a single thing about flouros...all mine done under what the hydo guy told me---HID. Good luck.

finally got a pic of the poor little thing.. it just sprouted monday so i guess its going on day 6.

doesnt look very good.. just these two orignal flowers.. its getting taller, thats about it.

I tested ph my today and it was 8.5. I bought some ph down and from now on i'll make sure it gets the right stuff. Dont know if that could be the cause of problems.. its probably the original overwatering.
