Rasafrasin'...Hermi Question
Ok, I've just discovered that my large, female, White Widow is actually a hermi. I don't care about the pollen that it could produce, because I've been pollenating both my girls with the male that I have.
My concern is whether or not it having gone hermi means that it will fail to produce THC as a proper female will, or if it's going to be fine. If developing mature, male flowers will keep it from producing THC as it should, will plucking the balls off before they mature prevent too much male hormone from disrupting THC production?
I also have a minor question about rockwool...
Do people buy precut rockwool cubes 6 for $8, rather than buying a 8"x36" slab for $6 and cutting it to size, for convenience or is it really hard to do yourself?
Rasafrasin'...Hermi Question
well personally when i notice my plant is a hermie i know it will still produce buds i just try to pick all the balls of or as many as i can but either way u will still get some female properties(bud)
Rasafrasin'...Hermi Question
hermie traits do not go away. the mpore pollen that flies around your buds...the more the plant will mature producing seeds instead of thc. never have pollen around your flower room.
If you are maturing a pollenated fmelae the male pollen and the seed producing mother should be in sealed off environments...goodluck LOL
Rasafrasin'...Hermi Question
In my experiences i cut off the balls eliminating the pollen, works somewhat pretty good. i wound up wit maybe 3 seeds out of 4 plants and the bud was reallly good to, so i dont see any drawbacks in ur situation, for the female ony grower u have to keep a real tight tab on the hermie, mine have ussually all gone female or shown female dominace after cutting the balls. It could have been due to room temps i fixed aswell.

would say most buy the precut rockwool made to fit their hydroponic setup if you do decide to cut it up yourself you should probably read up on the procedure as rockwool fibers can be a health hazard.
would also be leary of using any seed from the hermie as you may run into the same problem in future grows but would definetly try to remove all male pollen balls from that plant before they released pollen seeing how you only have 2 plants if you had alot more would probably remove it from the room.

I'll remember that for the future. There was no point in isolating anything. I only have three plants, two of which were female, one of which is now a hermi, and I wanted both of them to produce seeds. Lots of seeds.
I will be cleaning the place up before my next grow, of course. I don't know if I'll want seeds from the next batch of plants, and seeing as I don't know what strain I'll be growing next, I doubt that I'll want to chance cross pollenation with my White Widow male.
I know why the poor thing hermied, and was actually half expecting it to do it. All three of these poor things have had to put up with tons of trevail in their short lives as I've been learning to grow by growing them. I really need to build myself a better system. One that's easier to control and maintain. It's just a matter of aquiring the necessary funds to do so.
What I want is simple and efficient. I'm thinking of collecting the parts that I need over a period of time and putting it together once I have everything that I need. Some of which can be canabalized from the system that I'm currently using. The water pump, air pump and air stone, to name a few things, and the lights, of course.
I don't suppose anyone knows where I can get really cheap growing trays? All the ones I can find are rediculusly expensive.

Thanks for the info. It hadn't occured to me that it might actually be dangerous to cut the stuff into useable sizes myself. I had read that when dry it would be irritating to the skin in a manner like fiberglass insulation, but had failed to follow that through to it's logical conclusion. All in all, it's likely that it'll be better more me to buy it precut, but I shall see if I can find anything that will teach me how to properly deal with it when cutting it for one's self. If I can't then I'll not bother with it. If I do find something that will show me how I'll decide from what it says if it's a good idea for me to fool with it.

It's basically (r'wool) spun rock...like glass fibered-cotton candy, and yes it is harmful to your lungs. I always forget...keep it wet if you want to cut it up. In fact; I have just planted some beans in corners I cut off cubes, so that they would fit in netpots. goodluck
Rasafrasin'...Hermi Question
It can be dried back out and still be used once it's be soaked?
What would you use to cut it? A serrated kitchen knife? Kitchen shears? A Hanzo Katana?:smokin: Seriously, what would be the easiest, cleanest and safest way to cut it into useable pieces?
Rasafrasin'...Hermi Question
wetting it does help to prevent the fibers from going airborn but you may also need to wear some sort of filter mask to prevent breathing it in if your cutting alot of it.
have ripped cubes into but they didnt look anything like a cube after done so not sure what you would use to cut it a knife might work.
it will dry out and be usable and retain its neutral ph have even heard of reusing rockwool from one grow to the next so you dont necasaraly have to replace it every grow.
Rasafrasin'...Hermi Question
I use a simple commando knife that is real sharp...get one of those lone adjustable razor knifes...the ones that break off every 1/2" so you can always have a sharp blade. Once wet, It is like cutting butter, the fibers don't fly anywhere. peace

Cool. Thanks guys. Cutting my own ought to save me some money.
