what is needed ? what type of drill bit ?
I want to make my own bong , and I have a really nice piece of glassware i want to use , and then add my own bowl etc.
Can this be done ?
I practice drilled a Corona Beer bottle and it shattered just as i drilled through . :(
use a torch (pipe/cigar) lighter, and after holding it on the glass a LONG time, push what you are using as a stem through the glass.
if the seal is less than perfect use chewing gum.
you can hold fire on glass as long as you want, it won't fuckin melt, what are you thinking?
sorry about that kid man, the only perfect way is with a certain type of drill for glass, other than that the glass will most likely shatter. I'd reccomend you go out and buy a Sobe. Sobe bottles are made with a small notch in the bottom of the side which is extremely thin glass and you can make a perfect hole there with a screwdriver every time. then you can use it as a waterfall bong and get completely blitzed off a little weed.

Are you fucking stupid. Do you realize the extreme temperatures glass blowers use? Get a frill bit dude. I've heard a dremel bit works well also.
reg. dremel bits wont work, ive tried it, you need a certain bit designed for drilling glass
I've seen people use dremmels.
I've successfully hammered a screw (not a nail..) into glass before. I've yet to repeat it, though.

use a diamond bit, and KEEP WATER ON IT. also this is just a question but what are you trying to drill?? because if it's not pyrex theres a good chance it's a lead based glass.

Another tip is to put masking tape over the bit where you want to drill the hole, that'll stop the drill bit from slipping all over.
i recently used a small propane torch to melt a broken stem for a bong and also made a few curves in the galss to they look good

You can buy a MAP gas torch from most hardware stores, its not as hot as oxy-acetylene but close. Its really small and portable. That would work good for small projects.

Here is a kick ass video of a dude making a sweet piece out of a Corazon Tequila bottle. You can buy a glass drill bit at Home depot for about $12. I went to the head shop and bought a stem first to make sure I bought the proper size bit.
Make sure when drilling you keep the bottle still and use towels to reduce vibration. Also practice first on crap bottle with thick glass b4 you try to use a prime bottle.

using a a torch with map gas or propane will work to melt the glass. But I used to make bongs out of liqour bottles, I bought a bit designed for drilling in to glass at homedepot. It was like 13$, and yes keep water on the bit and where your drilling and it should work fine...
Lead glass is not in any way harmful and is really crystal not glass.. Some folk will believe anything.
Use a diamond tip drill.
Gently exert pressure on the glass and you should have no problems.

What is the difference between glass and lead crystal?
Glass is an organic substance consisting of a mixture of silicates, barates or phosphates that cools to a rigid condition without crystallization. Fine Crystal or Crystalline is made from a glass mixture that contains 6% - 10% lead oxide. Lead Crystal is made from a glass mixture that contains 10% - 24% lead oxide and Full Lead Crystal is made from a glass mixture that contains 24% lead oxide or more. For the most part, crystal by European standards regards 24% lead bearing glass as crystal. However, by American standards, any glass that is perfectly clear is considered crystal regardless of the lead content. Lead oxide in crystal gives the product clarity and sparkle. Any crystal that is hand-cut usually must be 24% lead oxide or over - otherwise the crystal would be too brittle and would break when cut or engraved.
