check eng. light

:mad: so ya, i drive to school this morning. nothings wrong with my car, i get outa class and wanna drive home to blaze and my fuckin check eng. light is on and my car idols like a bitch (all shaky and shit) and makes a constent clicking noise like every second...click, click, click... so im like wtf ever ill call dad he will tell me whats wrong blah blah so i start driving home. Taking it ez so i dont fuck somthing up bad (taking back roads) i get to my appartment, and get outa my car. and the dam thing STINKS stinks like the smell when u go to a demolition derby...like burning oil or somthing. so now im so fucking pissed i dont even wanna smoke.

o ya and to top it off, i live like 10 miles away from any shop that fixes shit thats half way decent and not just sum chop shop where u worry bout them fixxing somthing but destroying somthing in the process

Could be burnt oil. I'm no engine tech, but it sounds like you need a certified engineer to take a look at it.

If it has a turbo the turbo could have gone, or the head gaskit. Im an engineer but i work on marine engines, but the concept is the same. Take it to a pro.

hrmm start by telling us the car and a little more info. like milage and shit, might be able to help you out further

I'd guess and say one of the piston rings has snapped lettin oil into the cylinder... just a guess mind u... it might also cause the spark plug to mis-fire, i used to do mechanics at college but forgot most of what i've learned lol :o

take it to an autozone they check check engine lights for free and tell you what's wrong.

check your belts they do freeze up and create this ungodly burning smell just a guess really i am no mechanic

Does it smell like sulfur? Probalbly the Catalytic Converter. No biggie, just get it repaired. Lookin at burnin up about a bill. I am a moron, but I bet this is your problem.

I just open the hood and see if the engine is there. Just kidding. :stoned:

I find that light a pain in the ass realy I had a car it was always going off but was fine when the garage looked at it. Hate intermitent problems.
So I bought a engine code scanner and when it came on i scaned got the ID on the part needed fixed it my self in 10 minutes.

Was the best money I spent was on that code scanner saved a lot of money in the end.

Can not see why they don't have a display that give a code and then you look it up and deal with it your self like a MAP sensor or a dealer to change it out.

uhh yea heres the biggest reason for this problem.... 130,000 miles (trip to bonnaroo and 10,000 lakes festival, and many many hours of burn cruises under the belt) but ya im a starving college student so a new car is def. out of the picture so im hopping its not somthing to difficult/expensive to fix

i brg my car in for a yearly check up and change the oil on a reg schld. i dont treat my car badly by racing it around town or anything ether. im nice to that bitch why cant she be nice back.

sounds like it to me.

that click noise is most likely the engine whining for oil.
CHECK YOUR OIL LEVEL.. if its low, make sure you add oil to fill it. get 20w50, the thicker oil takes longer to leak.

I used to drive a 98 Caviler that was nothing but trouble.
Among other problems, it would constantly overheat. It would be â??45° Celsius outsideâ?¦ I'm on the side of the highway looking under the hood, in my mittens and toque, waiting for it to cool down. Good times. :dance:
No sooner had I got it back from the shop from fixing some problem, and the check engine light would be on again. Finally the shop I took it to just unhooked the light, and promised me that I wouldn't see it on again. (thanks guys!!) :thumbsup:

Then one day it blew up.
No. it didn't. but that would have made this story a lot cooler.

seriously before you go and drive somewhere CHECK THE OIL LEVEL...
I mean.. you can have a simple 200$, if that, fix....
but if you drive with no lube, your gonna cause the engine to seize...
and then you WILL BE in the market for a new car!

Well, are you using low sodium fuels?

Sodium/vanadium ratios have to be right in the fuel, the "danger Zone" is conciered to be 0.15 - 0.30.

Sulpher contained in the fuel forms metallic sulphides that coat the internal surfaces of the fuel injection eqipment including fuel pumps and the injectors.

These sulphides have low shear resistence and act as EP additive commonly found in lubricating oils.

This could be causing your problems. But i guess there no way of telling how much sulpher you have in your fuel aye?

hey man i work on my car all the time build a project car from the frame up. It sounds to me like you've lost your head gasket. The gasket between the cylinders and the coolent.

Cheak your radiator Take the cap off and look inside. if you see oil floating on the top its deffinently the gasket.

You didn't mention anything about smoke though the only thing is you should have been seeing grey/whitish smoke if coolant and oil is being combusted.

the ticking is deffinently your valves i wouldn't worry about that now its just a consequence of your engine not firing properly because theres oil and other shit in the cylinders.

If it is your head gasket and your a student i'd look it up serious about how to do it yourself. It looks like a very hard job to do since u have to take apart the engine but its really just the value cover its not that bad deffinently do able if you read and take your time. Don't waste like a grand for a dealership to do it.

...well i just went and checked and there is no oil floating on the top. does this mean its def. not the head gasket?

alright they said the reason my car was idolling wierd was becasue it was miss fireing. so they said i needed new sparkplug wires, they also said my intake was bad and was sucking air into the system and leaking coolent. i told them to fix it all..came to 900 bucks! 2/3 was fuckin labor

See, if you had bought it to england i would have done that all for free.

Good job it wasnt the head gaskit, probably would have cost more cos theres more labour in taking everything off the rocker.

a good and fair mechanic should tell you what is wrong with it for free if they arent too busy. either way theyll probably end up having to fix it which will cost money. sometimes the light can come on just from putting your gas cap on too tight but it sounds like something actually has gone wrong with your car
