First Time Grow Guide??

Hey, just reading the other thread about head shops in ireland being a rip off ... but i think the main reason there in business cause if most people went onto ebay they wouldnt know what to buy, they pay the extra for the staffs experiance.

So how about the ones that know what there doing put together a link of 2-3 really good threads on this forum or good basic grow websites etc ... or even a list of everything you need to buy on ebay to get a good grow going, so from the seedling pot things to the nutes etc ..

Just and idea that i think would encourage people to go from thinking of growing to actually growing

Cool Pt good idea, i hear you when you say the shops have "Experience". From what i gather Capel St imports threw Belfast?, there supply lol ant direct this came from one of the guys there so im not making it up. I recently went in looking for Leaf coat and was told to drop back a couple of days later. When i did they didnt have it!, in fact i was told theyd def have it. They didnt so i wasted two days traveling back into town for nothing. By the way i was assured when i visited the first time that they d have it when i called back, Bullshit bad customer relations. aldo im not telling folks not to drop in be warned there not that good i would have been better ordering from my shop in the Uk but id rather support an irish company. that bitching aside. Most of the info is on this site already..

Too say that its not complcated would be bullshit but a summary wouldnt be too hard too do. a Basic guide would be farly easy teaching people patience would be harder to do, some folks have some strange ideas when it comes to growing, i know ive heard most. It has to be realy hot to grow and the like,,lol because its Cannabis most folk think it needs to be a hundred C to growlol.
I;ll try to be serious for a moment. The best book ive read on Cannabis in the last couple of years has been Greg Greens Cannabis Grow Bible, available from Play.com for about 15 euro itll save time trawling around this place plus Mr Green is pretty spot on with his Tips.
We are all learning so take advice from people in the know not spotty teenagers with hundreds of posts that dont know Jack.
i used to be a member of Overgrow before it went down but much the same as here you'll find some people with a hell of a load of posts but i wouldnt take there advice the advantage with the book above is you can go back to it easy plus itll save you time in the long run,,,,,,,

I think a lot of the advice on growing is overcomplicated for the first timer. Keep it simple, at least at the start. Pop a few seeds in a pot and grow them over the summer or use a cheap fluorescent light with a timer. Some common easy to get nutes and an easy feeding guide.

I agree sometime's the advice can be off putting to new growers and youre right about keeping it simple but when i started i used all the roung soil cheap o shit from Atlantic and suffered in the end with crappy plants so its about trying to find a middle ground ant it

Again LOD your are the voice of reason my friend.Most of the heads in the grow shops try rip ya especially if your a biginner buy this,need that blah blah.And they are well overpriced.

Customer relations lmao yeh right eg;went back 3 times for mylar the one thats thick with white on oneside and each time "oh we'l ave it in this day just waitin on a delivery" lol for 3 months .Tried to pawn that cheap stuff (fuckin see through0 off on me and try to over charge me 5euro a metre.

DF , you have put up something there that has caught my attention.

I am in the process of building a small grow box for the first time and I am over confused by lights, kelvin , lumens etc etc etc. Like you say there is a shed full of advice but it's all very confusing for the first grower.

Correct me if I'm wrong but if I get 6 of those CFL bulbs ( the curly ones !!! ) running at 20W I will get 7200 lumens. In a grow box about 2 x 3 foot that's 1200 lumen/sq foot. Is that enough to bring from seed to reasonable buds. If I understand correctly these bulbs have a limited spectrum and hence the need for sodium etc. But if it possible to grow with these bulbs would this not be better for the first timer (and a hell of a lot cheaper) to gain experience and get to know the plants better and how they react to different things.

I think it's important to cut the variables to the minimum and just get that first grow from seed to bud. Now you may hit some problems along the way but an easy low cost start will encourage you to keep at it.

I've grown using florescent only and through the full growing cycle. I used 400W worth of light from 4 5ft 100W bulbs. I don't know what the lumen's/foot were, I just went ahead and set this up. One thing about fluorescent is that they are fantastically efficient and give out 400W of light without wasting any of that on heat. I don't think your 6x20W will cut it at an overall 120W, try getting at least 400W worth.

Use a reasonably good soil but don't sweat the details of which brand. Get some sand and if possible some perlite at the garden center. Sterilise the soil by microwaving it in batches for a couple a minutes then mix in some sand and perlite (these will help keep the soil loose and let the roots breath).

Cover your grow area in tinfoil, hang your lights on some chains and away you go.

I again have to agree with the frog dont go nuts on detail it'll put you off.
I agree 400watts of light is what ull need for a small set up 250 Hps would do but are probly more expensive than floro's aldo basementlighting in the uk offer some good prices and ive used them so uill recamend them,, Id rather buy a bag of Bio Bizz light mix myself as it has Nutes added for the first 3 4 weeks plus its pH IS PRE TESTED. Mylar is very good for reflecting light. Amen

This is turning into a very usefull thread :) and yea your dead right that too much info will put people off... I know nearly everything there is about growing mushies but know the bare minimum about grass ... But since i know the basics i can build on that by reading books and threads etc but without the basic foundation knowledge its a waste of time reading a book about it.

I wonder could someone in the know write 3 options bronze, silver, gold and tell people ....

right bronze .. heres the bare minimum you need and it should cost X amount and put the names on them so they can ebay them or go into a store without being sold crap... (just basic lights and soil and 1-2 nutes)

silver which will be more expensive but the basically everything you need to grow good weed.... (proper hps or MH lights, proper nutes etc)

gold package would be the whole 9 yards, to produce some real sticky icky icky! (same lights as above but all the nutes you'll need and the best soil to use and rock wool for shoots and i duno root hormone for clones if you even need anything to clone etc i havnt a clue)

but still only the stuff your going to use, im sure loads of people starting up bought stuff they never used or never will use :) so trying to save people on wasting that money and putting that money into better equipement or into some weed to smoke while your growing so you dont annoy the fuck outa your plants while there trying to grow haha

I was asking to see if were possible. But the 6 x 20W CFLs are suppossed to be the equivalent of 6 x 100W. I may not have made that clear.

But the long fluro's are at hand already from a kitchen rip out and I never chuck stuff like that away. Now all I need to do is get the cabinet/box.

BW - Those 20W CFLs may give the appearance of 100W in brightness but I can't see them giving 100W of energy to a plant, of course I don't know but physics been what there are, well...

ptl32 - Sounds good. Bronze should be stuff that can be sourced at your nearest Woodies/Atlantic etc and at a cost of 100 euro or less. Seeds should be cheap too (yeah I know how important good genetics are but wait till second or third grow).

ptl32 Thats a hell of an idea.. would make growing green an easy option.. "Hey man just pick bronze, silver or gold" Having a list of excatly what to purchase, and what to do in each phase of growth..sounds great
