Any chance of success?

Hey,
Just the other day a friend told me about how he can get hold of seeds and he had 2 on him. We found this really sweet spot nobody ever goes just around from my house over a fence. It's like this massive block of farming land that has these red cabbage and lettuce things growing all around. My friend and I planted 2 of them a couple of days ago in the soil which looked pretty healthy, and we planted 4 more seeds yesterday.

I've heard things like you can tell if the plant will be a female by the way the seed looks, etc. If me and my friend water these seeds regularly, do we have any chance of growing budding plants? We've planted 6 seeds all up and plan on doing a fair bit more, because there's a lot of land to cover and we figure the more the merrier.

Any other info like how long it takes for plants to sprout, mature and bud properly, how to take care of them outdoors like this, and other tips would be cool.

By the way, it's just early spring here in Australia, Victoria where I live. Hopefully that's the best time to plant.

it is kinda late to start frowing outside you missed the flowering period you are sopposed to plant the seed in april i say you have low if any chance of the plant stayign alive. but it depends on where u live.... but still i say its unlikey

Seriously? Why is it best to plant in April?
And how long is the entire process supposed to take?
The area we're growing in looks relatively safe, it's in a wide open space away from any serious danger..

its best i naprils because it gives the plant time to grow and mature because the plant flowers when it senses that the days get shorter. cause in aprils the days get longer making vegatate. then around the end of august early september they get shorter and nights longer which makes the plant flower or bud

may be time to plant in america
but keep in mind the people that
sugested that are in the northern
hemsphere and we are in the southern,
when they have winter we have summer,

G'day Tom. Geography seems to be a challenging subject here ?;) Since its early springtime in Victoria, you're right to be thinking about planting seeds. Your climate is getting warmer and as soon as you have average day temps. of greater then 12 deg. C and no more danger of frost, then go ahead and plant.
Are you sure nobody ever goes on your proposed planting patch ? If theres a farm next door with lots of vegetables in the field then there are going to be people around. Make sure you are secure; thats important.
Next, plant the seeds just below the soil surface; don't bury them. Give them lots of water if its dry.
Your next problem will be insects and animals that love the succulent leaves of seedlings. You will probably need to take defensive measures in this regard.
If you take care of your plants, use basic common sense, get a little gardening knowledge (look elsewhere on this site) then by the time the first ball is bowled in the Ashes, you should have a set of healthy plants. Flowering will not commence until the days begin to shorten (actually the nights begin to lengthen), which for you will be around March 2007.
I suggest you not worry about males and females until flowering of the males commences. Then ask more questions if you are unsure what to do.

they are farmers, and when there are a bunch of hands working the cabbage and lettuce crops , inevitably one of them knows a pot plant when they see it. you may not be able to tend they plants whenm needed because the farmers are tending thier crops

Trust me, it's a remote area. It's totally deserted, we've never seen anyone go there.
March 2007 you say? I thought it only took 3 months for them to start budding. What's this 12/12 cycle I hear so much about?
- By the way, is it only female plants produce good bud, or can you have males that give good produce too?

FIrst up mate you should have germinated your seeds in some paper towels first it will give you a better chance of your seeds actualy sprouting.. see if you could get some more and germinate them before you put them in.. secondly your plants will flower in Febuary next year not march... (i have a program which tells you when they will flower wherever you are in the world).. the 12/12 cycle means that your plants ill get 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness which will make your plants bud.. on the subject of males they are usualy used for making hash but i would just rip them out and concentrate on the females.. good luck

How do you properly germinate seeds, and can you tell if the plant will be female by looking at the seeds?

People germinate seeds in soil all the time and do just fine. After all their seeds thatâ??s what they do. However, I would recommend germinating them in small pots first then transplanting them into the ground (it makes it easier to protect them when their young.)
