8' x 8' room setup

Ok, heres the dealeo.

Im 17, almost 18, currently too lazy to get a job, and love plants of all type. I have some Lions Tail plants growing in a homemade bubbler cloner made from a laundry tub, so building anything is not a problem for me.

My mom likes the idea of growing some weed, she has given me an area in the basement to grow in which I have just finished putting up a wall to section it off. The room is 8 feet by 7 feet by 7 feet tall (392 Cu Ft), and I have access to 3 15 AMP circuits, one circuit is hardwired into the wall, one is an extension cord from the laundry room right behind the wall, and I have a second extension cord coming from the furnace room. Both extension cords are heavy duty rated for +15 amps.

This will be a Drip Style Hydro system.

Parts List:
First purchase:
- 10 Laundry Tubs: 1 for Cloning, 3 for veg, 6 for Flowering. They will be placed along the perimeter of the room, with enough room in the middle to walk around.
- 2 Plastic tubs for resevoirs
- 1 465 CFM blower for exhaust
- 1 420 CFM Can Filter
- 2 Metal Halide 400 W light kit /w White Batwing 16" X 24" and 400 Watt Sunmaster Warm Deluxe bulb * veg *
- 81 5" net pots: 9 pots per Tub for veg / flower
- 36 2" net pots: For Cloning. * they will all fit in the laundry tub *
- 2 Mag Drive 500 GPH pumps. * 1 for cloner and 1 for veg stage drippers *
- mist sprayers for Cloner
- Drip Irrigation manifolds to feed the plants


Second Purchase: * 1 - 2 weeks after first purchase *
- 3 Hortilux 400 watt HPS lights and ballasts w/ White batwing 16" x 24"
- 1 1/2 hp pump * good cheap one on ebay right now for flowering stage watering *
More things that I can't really think of at the moment.

The laundry tubs will be seperated by growing stage:
The Veg stage tubs will be connected via the drain, and fed to a resevoir, where the nutes will be pumped back up and to the plants via feed lines.
Same will apply for the flowering stage.
There will be a drain valve on each resevoir for drainage.

I will post more in a bit, must go get some munchies, and charge my cam batts.

What are your thoughts on my grow setup? Constructive criticism please :)
What are the recomended companies to buy nutes from? GH or Advanced Nutes?
Will be expensive, but the cost really isn't too much of an issue.

do you have your own house?

the lighting for that kind of room is going to be procey and put off tons of heat and noise.....

but anyhow heres my 2 pennys

2 1k hps with a 400w mh to mix in during veg

also those fans are not going to cut it imho, 1 1k light requires at least 500 cfm to keep your room at a nice 75-80*

The reason I would like to use multiple lights, is that it will be easier to direct them over the plants, instead of one giant 1000W trying to cover the whole area.

As for fans, if its not adequate, well, I have 2 centrifugal blowers that are just sitting around, and another massive HEPA filter / fan, I was gonna throw the HEPA out, so i might as well use the fan out of it, * its rediculously huge *.

u sound like u have done some research, Thats good

But b ready for some real eye openers.

Heat will be a major factor.

Listen to these guys who r giving u advice, It will save u money and time in the long run. And for what it is worth,,,Keep this between u and ur mum only.

Do not trust anyone who has nothing to lose, even ur best friend will tell someone sooner than later and so on and so one.

B careful how much u purchase online in a short period.

The biggest hurdle that u should face first is Saftey and Security.

P.s I dont think ur r going to have enough power with only 3 15amp outlets.

I was thinking of shoving my Wild Dagga plants into the grow room also * good as an excuse for having a hydro system / purchasing grow products, and start with just a couple of weed plants, just work my way up and see how things go. As for heat, hmm, if I have to, i suppose i can go get an AC unit, perhaps a window style one from home depot. I could run another 15 amp line from the breaker box to the grow room relativly easily. Ive done house wiring quite a few times, and the main lesson "Turn the power off first" :p , I can say from experience, 15 amps between your fingures makes for an interesting tingle... Not to mention it was hard to hold a jiont afer for about 45 mins lol.

I think that you have more things covered than folks on this board with several grows under their belt. At the same time it is always a learning exp. As far as the fans I use a 172CFM vortex with a 90CFM fan on a 1K and Temps are fine in a area that is smaller than 4x4, but I have made other modifications and have the vortex sucking the heat right out of a glass enclosed hood with the 90CFM pushing air into the hood at the same time. The vortex sucks the heat not only out of the hood, but out of the cab and pulls it threw my scrubber. Have you thought about making some cool tubes? It will improve the whole grow not only because it can eliminate heat probs, but you can get the lights allot closer to the plants. IMO those 400w's need to be no further than 18in an even at that, you are starting to loos lumens, ideal is 12in and under.
And those breakers will be just fine, technically you could runn 3 400watters on 1 15 amp. I have my 1K and a few fans on the same breaker as the washer and dryer, given I don't make it a practice to run the light at the same time as the washer and dryer, but the dryer has been turned on a few times while everything is going. 3 400watters would push it a little, but remember a 400w takes about 3.9 amps at 120 volts, you shouldn't have any problems in the long run. Use power strips that have GFI circuitry so they will trip when over loaded with more than 15 amp.
Hope all this helps, and like one folk said, don't tell anyone, it may seem like a fun pastime, but sitting in a cell aint. Also I really wouldn't put any other plants in there do to any insect problems, some do it so feel free to, this is just my, YOU KNOW.

With such a comprehensive shopping list it sounds like you know exactly what you want and have a ruff idea of what you want your grow space to look like. I've had to give grow rooms a face lift numerous times because the vision doesn't correspond to reality. Even now after a few years, I still tweek the setup. Keep us posted on your construction progress!!!

Due to numerous power outtages, I have been worried about losing power while GROWING plants... Would be a pretty bad thing if that happened. Well, I talked to my mom, and we are thinking about getting a natural gas generator, @ 8000 watts, and 2500 bucks + tax. This would be used STRICTLY for my grow room. I am trying to figure out what the price difference is in electricity vs NG cost, and I need to find the gas used per hour for the comparison. Will be interesting, but might be worth it.

When you say a lot of power outages what do you mean, and for how long? That Generator is going to be a monster and suck up a lot of fuel. It mite be over kill unless you have power outages like every week and for more than 24 hours at a time. Even then you could just have a small generator to keep a couple lights on for some temporary back up IMO. Do you live out in the country where no one will notice a loud monster of a generator?
Also, the fellow is right about giving your grow space face lifts, it is almost unavoidable.

HazmatTHC you sound like you have been reading up on hydro. The heat is a big problem.I grow in a closet 2'wide x by 8' long by 8' high and I use two 400 watt 6"in. air cool shades.With one 6"vortex fan pulling the fresh air in across the shades and out in the attic.The 6"vortex fan puts out 449 cfms.
I can lay my hands on the shades and not get burned.GH 3 part nurts. are
all you will need to start your first grow.The plants will tell you what they need.Give this a look it's called POT-TV.NET the clip is called MR.GREEN:
1 grow chronic.He shows you and tells you what to do to get a good grow.
You said you done house wireing before,I would run a double 20 amp breaker
with two circuits with 12-2 wire.that's more power than you would use at one time.it will run all your pumps and lights,fans timers and all.Are you getting a thermo-hygrometer,so you can monitor the temp&humidtiy?
One thing you need to do is have a veg & flower room. one for veg and clones and one for flowering.The veg room lights are on for 18/6 and your
Flowering room is 12/12 hrs of light.It's always great to here that somebody is starting to grow.Keep us posted l would like to see how you are doing if you can put up some pixs we all can see too.

I have thought about employing a few generators too. Not due to power cuts, mainly due to the bill and the current kW/h consumption. Spending a good amount of money on a generator can ensure you won't get much of a problem with noise. Some generators state that they run silently (meaning it isn't louder than a normal conversation between two peeps). You could put a silent running LPG/natural gas generator in the basement or out house and not worry too much.. but I am just hypothesising

In my single grow room, I was planning on splitting the room with a mylar plastic right from the roof to the floor so i can have a veg / flower sections. Thanks for the vid too, will watch it right now :)

I was thinking of getting a 1100 CFM vortex, and a carbon filter slightly rated above that, and use it too cool the lights * when I get a light hood that is sealed *, and also use it to draw the air out of the room.


Spirit, the generators at home depot here, are said to be EXTREMELY silent. The only thing that bothers me, is what the MTBF * mean time between failure * is... Most likely I will be running it only for my plants, so around 8000 Watt generator or so. We lost power last night, * go figure *, was another huge storm. Every single thunder storm, our tiny area goes out, and doesn't come back on for a good 5 hours. Getting so frustrated from it.

Will hopefully be going to home depot and looking at the Gens there and find out more about them.

Use Panda material to separate the rooms, it is thicker and more durable, but miler is better for your basic reflective material.
Keep up the research, good to know that they do have some silent generators, I have only herd dragon blasters that you could here from a mile away.

Ok, so I finally got off my ass, and took the pics :p

The first pic is of my 465 CFM blower with a hose leading out the window. I plan to cover the outside window with a grate, to make it look like some kind of industrial vent for something.

The second pic is from the door, and you get to see the nice crap I have cluttered in there. The 400W MH bulb + ballast is to the left. You may notice some odd white things sticking off the door. These are Glue Gun sticks that we cut and screwed onto the screws that were sticking out, being precautious here .;)

Third pic is of the wall and the door open. That wall is actually 8 feet wide. I plan to have all my Vegetative growing done there, and split the room paralelle with the wall, and have my Flowering done on the other side. Will be enough room to grow and walk around easily.

The last pic is of the blower duct tapped to the mounting thingy that holds the blower thingy and moves the air out of this growing room thingy that them plants is gonna be'a growin in! :p hehehe

I am gonna be doing a slight "Change" to my setup. I will be getting long trays to grow in instead of the wash tubs. More space, cheaper, lighter, more plants for cloning / veg!

Will also be installing a dual 15 Amp circuit into the grow room.

Tonights shopping list:
-Dual 15 amp breaker + other needed electrical supplies.
-2 Fish Tank water pumps. ( 1 for Cloning, 1 for veg )
-Trays for growing in.
-3 8 port watering manifolds + necessary pipes. ( 2 for Cloning, 1 for veg )
-2 Resevoirs. ( 1 for Cloning, 1 for veg )
-Tubing + parts for water feed lines.
-Other things I may stumble upon while browsing the store. :D

Air is coming in through an oppening in the roof.

I will post a pic later tonight when most of the room is done. The tiles are being taken down, and the roof will be covered with tarp. Im just finishing off the wiring for the Dual 15 Amp circuit, and then some other minor details, then will get the pic :)

If you can duct your air inlet to be at floor level it might help keep the cooler air under the warm air. Since warm air rises it would be advantageous to have the cool air sucked up behind it. Failing that, I dont think adequate air will be forced to circulate around your grow area

Well, im considering getting a larger blower * MUCH LARGER *, 2000 + CFM or more. Could use my current 465 CFM blower as an intake from the outside of the growroom, and send the air through multiple tubes to:

#1 Bring in fresh air.
#2 Blow the air directly on the plants via vent tubes to strengthen plants.
#3 Mix the air around.
#4 Other possible things that may happen at the molecular level when there is moving air. * uh oh, startrek thoughts are happening *:p

Will need to find a way to conceal the noise of the exhaust outside tho. Oh well, I will find a way, I always do, hehe.:p

Pro: Moves alot of air for its price.
Con: ITS HUGE!!!! Could maybe place it outside of the grow room...

or

Two 737 CFM CAN Fans
Pro: Small, will move a decent ammount of air.
Con: More expensive for less airflow but possibly quieter.

If you live were the power goes out alot You can buy a whole house generator For around 4000.00 with a swicthing box ,so when the power goes out a couple of mins on come the gen& when power comes back on. off goes
the gen.If I was going to use co2 I would start with co2 tanks.Those gas burning co2 generators are for alot bigger room.You can spray them with
carbonated water{seltzer water} do it when the lights are off so you dont

Hazmat I got a vortex fan made in canada. It's about 49db's. I build a box and installed it inside with rock wool sound insulation.I put it up in the attic and I dont here it at all.The one I have is a 6" 449cfm's 49db's it exchanges the air in the room around every 25 mins. .My room is 2'x8'x8' width times length times height will give you the cube feet of the room.you can go from there to see how big of a fan you need.

Got up a Seperator wall made of Panda Plastic / Black-white mylar stuff. Seperates the room down the middle into two 4 x 8 foor sections.

Forget nomal reflectors, I could get you some pretty damn good deals on parabolic reflectors, that way you could drop the lights like 10" off of your plants and same electricity. I'ld go with 3 1000 watters if you go with parabolics, 3 600s'll do well to but they won't pump your plants as much.

Well, yesterday I ordered 3 water pumps, and some carbon for my filter * I wasn't finished filling it with carbon because I ran out *.

Today I checked the tracking number expecting my stuff to arrive tmro earliest, well, it said my stuff was delivered already!!! =O Went to the mailbox, and WHAMMO! a large box, with my 3 pumps, the carbon, and some extras !!!:D

The extras we a HUGE water pump, a large 4 x 4 x 4 inch Rockwool cube, and a pack of 9 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 inch cubes, 2 magazines, * no not porno :p *, they are "Maximum Yield, and "Plant Talk". I ordered 7 lbs of carbon, the dude gave me the remaining bag!!! Which is around 10 lbs MINIMUM!!!! =O

The reason is because I had ordered some stuff before, and they were out of stock * said there was 5 in stock when I had ordered *, so I was given a refund, and told I would receive a bonus in my next order!! :D I will DEFINATLY be purchasing from him again! :D

Will be ordering my nutrients, and some Flood Tables soon.

One of my buddies had some seeds from weed that he bought not too long ago.

Decided I might as well give them a shot at growing. One has cracked, the others im waiting on. I've got the cracked seed in some rockwool right now, and in a nice dark place. Hope it sprouts soon, and I hope my White Widow seeds arrive!:dance:
