I'm assuming that when you say "what country is best to live in, in the states..." you mean what state is best to live in? California would be the answer. I've been to almost every other state in the union, and while there are a lot of great places to live, California tops them all I believe. Could be personal bias speaking though.
I couldn't imagine myself living in any other place besides California. New York City would be my only other option. I'm just a city boy, simple as that.

I'm a jersey girl thru and thru and as much as the New Yorkers may hate me for sayin' it..I love jersey! but I also fuckin adore NY, it's a beautiful state especially in the city. PA isn't bad either 'cause Philly and Easton rock.

I'd say neither, both are waaay too expensive and crowded. NYC can be quite crappy, have you seen that movie Escape From New York? There are lots of better places in the US.
I've been to New York and I've been to California. If I had to choose between the two, it'd be California, just for the weather and the scenery. But really, I wouldn't want to live in either place, although both are nice places to visit. The same money it takes to live in either place can allow you to live a much nicer life in the middle of the country: buy a bigger house, eat better food, more money for entertainment, drive a better car, whatever.
A friend renting a home in CA had to move out because the owner sold the house for $800k. Looking at pics of that house, it wasn't much (if any) better than houses in my neighborhood that sell for a third that price or less. In fact, that friend wants to move back from CA now, because his rent (rent!) is $1500/month, and he could BUY *two* houses here in the midwest with monthly payments that size.
California is great: from Los Angeles to San Francisco to Palm Springs to Yosemite, i love it all. Something that bugs me is that I have a lot of friends who hate Los Angeles although the only place they've gone is downtown. I wish people would realize that LA is so big that there are many diverse cities within it. Those are my two cents...
NY is home to the mecca of cutting edge culture in the US. Probably a love it or hate it lifestyle though. Fast to one is hard to another.
Cali's is nice. Lot's of sunshine, beautiful year round, and forgiving marijuanna laws. Only reasons I couldn't live there are the ridiculous gun laws in The People's Republic of Kalifornia; which are getting worse. And I prefer hurricanes to earthquakes (you can build a flood proof wind proof building, but regardless the size, if it;s sitting on the ground, it can be an EQ's bitch).
But I am guessing if you did a poll across America, most people (outside of Texas that is) will tell you Cali would be their choice. Especially if money was no object (adjusted $/std of living). I don't think many would complain too much about living in southern california if they had the means to do so comfortably.
It's just for me, Texas has it all. So huge and diverse, in terms of people, culture, climate and in geography, everything is represented- mountains, plains, deserts to subtropical climates. Mild winters in the south, but it snows in the north (though we had a white christmas not too long ago even here in houston!) and hot summers most everywhere, but in some places, summer nights get down to the 60's!
Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio; texas landscapes, nasa, waterfalls, the bat caves, the alamo, the riverwalk, the schlitterbaun in new braunsfels, lots of beaches.
MUSIC: Austin has more music venues per capita than any other city in the nation.
ART: Houston Theater District second only to NY for live performances; permanent companies in professional opera, ballet, and symphony; dozens of major natural science, historical, and art museums.
SPORTS: at least two pro teams in every major sport; and college and HS football is out of CONTROL. Top 5 town for mountain biking. so many rivers. so many golf courses.
SCHOOLS: world class universities in Tx A&M, UH, and UT; elite of the elite in Rice University (highest % of merit scholars in the nation)
WOMEN: maybe not as many tanned, botoxed, whitened and tightened movie stars, but if you like down home fat bottomed girls, we have lots of 'em.
Number 6 largest ship port in the WORLD. Number 2 ranked airport (US); #1 shipping airport in the WORLD (ranked by cargo shippers). Buses and big city public transport are not that great though. You generally need wheels in TX. Though that is kind of my favorites actually- the highways. I'm glad you posted this, because thinking about it, when I get off work in the morning, I want to roll one and roll OUT. Enjoy some beautiful Texas landscapes rolling down hwy 59!

I've never been to either place, but I've allways wanted to go to NYC. CA would be cool, but it's just too damn far away. The cost of a trip to LA would cost me more to go to bermuda. By far. I'm sure both places are awesome though or so many people wouln't live there.

We got land for dayssssssssssssss. If you're looking to build a nice ranch or looking for a nice fishing hole, we got it.
We're friendly down here. Not always in a rush (although the highways around can get you killed) and we like to take things slow.
Sun for dayssssssssssssss. Sometimes too much. But hell, you can still walk around in shorts on some days in Feburary.
No income tax!! We do have a high sales tax rate (8.25 percent I think) but the tradeoff is the state doesn't tax your paycheck and you don't pay state taxes at the end of the year. Another part of the tradeoff is that they're pretty quick to give you a ticket around here...revenue
We got jobs. Dallas was named the best city to find a job recently. Alot of corporations have offices out here...Honeywell, IBM, Microsoft, Verizon, Nokia, AT&T, list goes on...
Cost of living! THings are a little cheaper around here and the dollar stretches. More for your money.

It really is a state of mind. Even being part of the South, you find things in Texas are a little different from our sister states. When I was growing up in Alabama and Kansas, the two places you wanted to go to were either Dallas or Chicago. After I moved to New Jersey, I swore I'd get back down below the Mason-Dixon and Texas was going to be my final resting place. It's great down here and really does feel like home.Quote:

Boston is the shit man, it's like a small (relativley) clean New York. No urine smell or anything.... I've never lived in another city, but of the citys I've been to, Boston will always be my favorite
I like my state.. born and raised in lil 'ole West Virginia. Slow-paced life, we're a rural state, don't have any of those large noisy cities (except on football game weekends here in Morgantown), and the scenery is absolutely beautiful. The people are friendly anywhere you go.. I'd live here above Cali or NY anyday. I think I'd like Colorado, Montana, Oregon... I wanna visit all them. :)
I've lived in Massachusetts, North Carolina, Florida, illinois, but once I came to California I never left. Where else can you get up in the morning and go skiing, then mnt biking, then surfing, then go into the cityfor a night on the town, all in one day.

I’ve been a Middle America/ southern gal my whole life and I wouldn’t want to live any other way. I refuse to life in a state where they don’t know how to make sweet tea properly. I also won’t live where it is acceptable to spell America with a “k”. I think you would find that most Americans would say neither (In my own biased opinion).
I’ve lived in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Delaware (although Delaware not by choice). I’ve spent a lot of time in other places like Massachusetts and Vermont. But Middle America is where my heart is.
