In the movie Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, what does Johnny Depp smoke out of the light bulb when Dr. Gonzo is on his crazy acid trip in the bathtub?
If I remember correctly he is sitting in front of the television, and the camera moves so that it looks like the couch he's sitting on is levitating.

ive ALWAYS wondered wat the hell that was! lol.. i just assumed he was like lighting underneath the lightbulb and sucking in the fumes HAHAH.. but iknow thats not right

It's either a light bulb vaporizer, or he's smoking meth. It's not meth, because he doesn't mention meth when he's talking about the smorgasboard of drugs that he has in the briefcase. It's probably bud, hash, or opium.
i feel like it might not be weed bc the whole like scene just seems more intense. liek when he floats up w/ the couch. but it could be.. some NICEEE ass weed

I'm almost positive it's bud. I don't see the sequence after (the SF acid scene and the Wave Speech) as a hallucination, instead I believe it's a flashback (as in memory, not acid flashback) that just happens to be brought on by the herb.
that SF scene is one of my faves in the whole movie :)

It must be weed, I'm pretty sure that is the only smokeable thing he lists, 'cept coke i guess but you probably wouldn't use it that way. And for me, I don't see that scene having any hallucinations, when he floats on the couch, to me it describes the feeling of being high, like your in your own little world, that scene describes getting high for me very, very well.
So: its weed... and I don't think they picked up any more drugs at that point in the movie, but he did get some adrenaline later on, so assuming they only had what they listed at that point, it was weed.
Couldn't be the coke, as Dr. Gonzo accidentally dropped alomost all of it in the very begining of the movie, just after the hitchhiker runs away and they continue onto to Vegas. Just more evidence that it's bud.
i dont want to sound stupid but what was the deal with the song during Dr. Gonzos trip. i mean i know he was tripping and i know its hard to tell what anyone is talking about when their tripping but was there any thing significant about the song?

Care to back that up with anything, seeing as meth is never mentioned in the list of drugs at the begining, nor anywhere else in the movie or book. And crack hadn't even been invented in the early 70's.

Yeah, I admit that meth COULD be in that list, but having read almost everything Hunter S. Thompson wrote, I don't see him as someone who would do meth. Speed, yes, but not meth specifically. The fact that meth only began to be made for recreational use in the late 60's also leads me to believe that it simply wouldn't have had the time to permeate the drug culture to reach a point where it would have been written about in a major work.
I've read the book many times and seen the movie many times.
He is smoking HASHISH! He says so. He says something like I just need to get some good rest and drink a little rum and smoke some hash.
