HELLLLLP!!!!!!!! Tap Root Stop Growin!!!!!!
ok i germed 12 seeds 7 of which cracked open and revealed a tap root. as soon i as i saw the tap root i put them in some 50% Scotts Potting Soil and 50% Scotts Perlite. i sprayed the soil LIGHTLY with water to moisten the top of it for 3-4 days. then i left them alone for another 3 days and nothing. so i took to of the pots and dug up the seeds and the tap root have growed 0. what happend?
What should i do next time??
Money is tight anything i can get for the rest of them to help them?
I decided to give them a GOOD soaking and not sure what else to do... HELPPPPPP PLZ THX

Sounds like you didn't water the soil enough. At this stage, until the seedling actually sprouts from the soil, the soil needs to be very moist, and possibly under a humidity dome.

yea,. you should have done more than spray the soil lightly. you should have made the soil damp. you dont even need to do the paper towl method. just stick them in the dirt and keep the dirt damp.

Yeah that sounds about right, but they might be dead now, so it's probably a good idea to start a new set.

Imo, you overwatered. Once you have seeds that have cracked and planted 1/4" deep in soil, they should NOT be watered/sprayed at all for at least two days, depending on your temps at soil level. Hot temps will dry the soil quickly on top, but not much down an inch or two into the soil. Stick your finger down into the soil about an inch. If any moisture is felt, its too soon to water.
Another means of telling when its time to water is to physically lift each pot/cup right after a full watering, then, in a couple/few days when they get really lightweight from lack of water, its time to rewater. peace and good growing

well personly i plant the tap root when the seed casing has completly come off
and i have had some pretty nice results doing it this way
cheers all :)

my bet is on the Scott's Soil as the source of the problem ... overwatering will cause Pythium Wilt with seedlings, but these rich potting soils are killing seedlings, too ... I lost a bunch of $$ seeds to Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil, it's just too rich, burnt them right up ... (Fox Farm does make a "Light Warrior" soil, that is mild, especially for seedlings) ... after the plants are a couple inches tall, there's nothing better than Fox Farms soil ... try a plain, mild soil, with sand or perlite added, see if you don't have better results ... good luck ... :smokin:

Yeah, the pre-fertilized soils will kill em too, especially if they're being watered frequently. I was thinking that the 50% perlite might have cut the ferts down some from being at a fatal level for seedlings, but maybe not....
When planting germed seeds, its best to NOT pack the soil firmly. Leave it sorta loose in the containers. Then when you water before planting to moisten the soil, water until it runs out the drain hole/s. That will settle the soil.
Its also possible to flush the newly planted seeds out with a heavy watering, so i use a spray bottle to add moisture the 1st time or two after they are planted, or until they actually sprout and begin growing a taproot and get anchored to their world. Peace at ya.
