Is it possible? I'm looking at building a new cab soon and I was thinking of this combo.
-C-22
-1000watt hortilux in a vented hood connected to a carbon scrubber
-265cfm dayton or 465 not sure is the 265 is enough.
-Mylar
-Probably at least one active intake but more than likely 2
With a set-up like that or similar would it be possible or would it be too much to try and keep the temps down even with the hood? Any input would be greatly appreciated!
its possible........just make sure you have great ventilation and keep the temps low....goodluck
Ive seen a 1000 in a cabinet. It had a small A/C hooked up to the space and a centrifugal fan for the hood, and one big exhaust through a carbon filter. 2 oscillating fans inside. On all but the hottest of the hot days it stayed 80-85. Enclosure was about 6 feet by 6 feet by 6 feet.
PS. It would be good to note that the setup was fairly loud with the 2 centrifugal fans and the a/c.
you can do it, you just have to make sure that you have enough cfm of exhaust and it look's like you are on the right track...peace
Yes you want that ideally.
However, as much focus as you place on exhaust, you need to place on the air intake temps.
So, I wouldn't put up a 1K watt bulb in a garage or attic.
But if its indoors and the incoming air is say 75 or lower, by all means its fine.
As for your exhaust, always go on the safe side...get the bigger unit 465CFM...you can always also buy a "Variable Speed Controller" to hook up and tone down the draft if needed.
I would go with the bigger fan,at least ... my little 400-watt sodium in a vented hood has a 250cfm fan, and I'd like to see it with a much larger one ... :smokin:
I wouldn't use a 1k light in a C22 cabinet. Not because it can't be done, but because the amount of area in a C22 is pretty limited, and a smaller light can handle the smaller area, and do so while using less power and causing fewer heat-related issues.
A 600w light with a digital ballast and a cooltube would be my recommendation, or (for more light placement flexibility), a 400 watt light and some warm CFLs at the edges of the long part of the rectangular area. (This works really quite well.)
Here's a 400 watt light in cooltube with accent CFLs (one set of four 30-watt warm CFLs on each side). The cabinet pictured is very close to the dimensions of a C22. A 1k light would pierce the canopy better, but that canopy is just the unfortunate consequence of me having to leave town for a bit and not wanting to be flowering while I was gone, so they got an extra six weeks veg. In normal circumstances (e.g. much less time in veg), that would be a standard ScroG and the canopy would be nowhere near that thick (and the lights would be a lot lower).

Ever since I first saw that pic i have been dreaming of some stuff I could have done with my cab. I really really really like the style.
But...
I would stick with the 1,000Watters.
I went to those after dicking around with 400 and 600W hortiluxes and so forth.
THe penetration cababilities of the 1,000K bulbs are pretty fricking amazing.
It eliminates, for the most parts, the uneven canopy growth directly under the light source.
It forces the plants to produce serious buddage on the 1rst and 2nd levels of plants instead of just to the top 1/3.
ANd it eliminates completely the need for side lighting.
Those 1KWatters are just fricking killer lights.
He is one pure sativa growing, under a 1K light on day 26 of flower.
Only day 26....and a couple of white russians...
Penetration of light is what you want for max harvest.
Well, to each their own. I understand the benefits of massive lighting, and if you can handle a 1k light inside a C22, more power to ya! I have no regrets though, personally. The heat issue would just be too much for me (cab in attic, although there is an 11k BTU window AC unit like 6 feet away from the intakes). And there's a point of diminishing returns too. I honestly do not think it's even *possible* to get double my current yield by doubling the amount of light in that confined space. I'm sure I'd get more, but I bet it wouldn't be *that* much more, because I really fill that space already with nice, dense buds.
That said, if it were feasible for me to use a bigger light in that size cabinet, I definitely would, and for anyone who can, I envy you. ;)
I can assure you that if you put a cool tube on the 1k light, you wouldnt have any heat issues.
But no, you are correct, in the attic it probably is too much....you do need a lot more room between light and canopy.
I have mine about 8" from the top....and with a 400 - 600W, you can grow within a couple of inches.
You do need a lil more room for the spacing with the 1K and maybe those cabs dont have that space.
Still, I love the scrog...just love it. You do very well. Much better than my scrog ever was.
As for doubling the harvest...nah....but your buds would get 3X as fat.
hey H...what's up! Jamstigator nice stuff...you guys both make good argument for the cause...It comes down to personal choice once again...I like the argument of the penetration of the 1000w, and I agree...with a cooltube and strong fan system...I agree no heat problem, but I also love what i have read about 600 watt giving out more light proportionately per watt than the other wattage lamp.
And if heat is an issue, then you better err on the cool side for sure...good to see ya around H' later.peace
Wow well thanks for all the replys guys I really have something to think about now. I'm think i'm leaning towards the 1000 watt and maybe just building a cab about the same dimensions as a c-22 a but deeper. I think they're only about 20 inches deep. I could go with a 600 watt and extra cfls like i'm doing now but in all reality after all that it's going to only save me an extra 100-200 watts instead of 400 so why not just get the 1000 and save all that extra space for the plants??? Another question. Is a cooltube better, worse, or about the same as a vented hood in terms of keeping the temp down??
A 1000 watt light is perfect for *two* C22s, if you hadn't considered that. You don't put the door on one, and you put a better backing on it, then stick them together, the one with the backing in the back, the one with the door in the front. That's a bit less than 16 square feet, which is just about perfect for a 1k light. A few people I saw on overgrow did it that way. I think one of them called his 'The Monolith'. Not exactly stealthy though. ;)
And I like cooltubes, but that's probably just a matter of personal preference. Tubes take up very little space, which is why I like them, especially inside a cabinet.
Funny thing jamstigator i was running that through my head all day yesterday and today. it's be $200 bucks but that's a good amount of space and much simpler than me having to draw up plans and get out the ole tool belt. I was thinking it, i just needed to hear it from one else to push me to do it. I'm not too worried about stealth it'll be in a locked room tucked in a corner...maybe i'll do something to the outside to help cover the seem too. Coming this winter, "The Monolith"...rated R
I wish I could do (or could have done) that myself, but alas, I showed the woman a picture of The Monolith and all she could say, was, "Oh my God, no way, it's huge!" Even so, I could have talked her into it, except that it simply wouldn't fit where I wanted to put it. The single C22-sized one I have is a tight fit itself, mere inches to spare.
