When I walk out of my house the first thing I see, about 3-4 miles away, is the Santa Cruz Mountains and Mt Umunhum in particular. Yesterday the police raided a farm on Mt. Umunhun with over 11k plants and on Monday they raided a farm with over 10K plants. Damn! So much weed within sight of my house and the police found it first :(

The farms were about 3-4 miles from my house, and a couple thousand feet up on the mountian, so no, I didn't smell it. Many times over the years I've been mt biking up in the area, however, and would catch a whiff of something "skunky" ;) It's best not to go poking around the big farms though. Those guys tend to shoot first and ask questions later. When they raid these places its like a military operation. Cops in full camo with automatic weapons creeping up the hill. They had another big bust last fall where one cop and two growers died in the shootout.Quote:

Shoot first and ask questions later? What's going to happen when everybody comes looking for you in the mountains? Growers aren't that dumb, they'll probably have the weed all covered up and tell you to get off they're property. Tell them you smell something 'skunky' and they'll either give you some to shut you up, tell you to fuck off, or beat your ass. :)
Seriously, though, why would anybody grow so much weed so close to town? They were asking to get caught.
Don't be so naive Rain Man. You don't just cover up 11,000 plants. These are large scale commercial grows. A lot of money in and a lot more money out. Those guys don't fuck around. People tend to be pretty protective of $45million. Here's a link to one of last years bustsQuote:

As far as growing so close to town, it may only be a few miles as the crow flies but it might as well be hundreds. The Santa Cruz Mnts are very rugged and steep. It's a 20+ mile drive up bumpy mnt roads. Plus the locals living up there don't exactly welcome strangers. Actually it's the perfect place to grow. I'm sure every farm they bust there's 10 more waiting to supply the masses down below.
Hmm, I guess so, but it is still moronic to shoot at anybody who is close to your grow operation, it would draw way to much attention to the area you are growing in. It is even dumber to shoot at police like the folks in the article you just posted did, as if shooting at them will make them go away.
When I used to grow, I went deep into some woods, planted my seeds, and went back everyonce in a while to check on them. If they were ever found... Not my problem, my primarary form of defense was evasion, made sure the feds would never link it to me. Luckily, I didn't do it for long and I wasn't caught. If you are going to grow, the last thing you want to do is resort to violence when somebody discovers your spot, you better be able to get the hell out of there at the first sign of trouble.
It isn't the perfect place to grow, if it was the perfect place to grow they wouldn't have gotten caught. If I was growing that many plants, it would be at least be a few hundred miles from civilization.
Lets all go to payphones (for anonymity) and call in pot gardens that dont exist and make them chase their fuckin tail for a few months. Outdoor places way out in the middle of no where. Not people's homes or anything.Quote:

I agree with Fengzi. When people are investing alot of time and effort into a cash crop they naturally become very protective. Not to mention that people who live up in the mountains or out in the sticks could shoot you and kill you and you would never be found. :smokin:
