Alot of guitarists I know including myself wanted to quit after a few months when we had all solidly progressed, but it still seemed like we'd never be really really good. I've been playing for almost 4 years now and I have to say I'm getting to be pretty good. So one thing to remember, don't give this up once you've started.
A decent electric guitar to start off with is a Squier Bullet. It is a nice guitar for guitarists who don't really have an ear for tone yet and who are just there to learn the basics in the easiest way possible. You'll be able to find them for under $150 most musical shops you go to. Try going to a large-scale music store though because little guitar shops will most likely not have this guitar.
Good luck
