Marijuana for depression?
Well I was wondering can marijuana be perscribed for depression? I was asking this because I realize how depressed and not so hungry when I really am (hard to explain) when I'm sober but when I smoke and keep my high going for like an hour I start to get hungry and theres nothing but euphoria through my whole high. So I finally realized that me being high cures depression (temporarely, but those anti-depressiant pills are too) and it actually allows me to chomp down on a full meal without complaining about getting falsely full too soon :p.

Marijuana isn't exactly PRESCRIBED for depression but there is a large general concensus that marijuana can definitely be used for depression. It definitely helped me....

Yeah, same...I guess marijuana being targeted on anti-pot commericials as being "influence to young teens and suicidal thoughts" they wouldnt say it was used for depression xD.

Well in my honest opinion, I wouldn't say cannabis was good for depression....It may work while your high, but when your not im thinking it will make you feel worse than you initially did.......
I know weed dramatically increases the production of serotonin, but I dont know what the serotonin levels are like when you come down.....if they go lower than normal or go back to normal...?
It may help depression, I dont know.....that is just my opinion from what i know....just thought id make sure you understand im not 100%
But im interested in Beachguy or anyone else knows about Serotonin levels after you have come down from weed.... :)

"Not only does marijuana not cause depression, it looks like it may actually alleviate it," said Mitch Earleywine, co-author of the new study and associate professor of psychology at the University at Albany, State University of New York.
The new study adds to a growing body of knowledge suggesting that marijuana's active components, called cannabinoids, may be beneficial in certain psychological disorders. In a review published this May in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, researchers form the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in Great Britain noted, "Patient reports and observations, backed by known pharmacology, suggest that the cannabis derivatives delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) may have mood stabilizing properties," including anti-depressant and anti-anxiety effects.

I believe, this study shows no affect on Serotonin levels except during migraines.

orangeman, your 16..enjoy your teenage years bro, weed will definetly help when your down, but if you used it as a bottle, then it'll just make you worse off...

Word, 1234abcd (awesome name XD )
I love weed, man. Love it. But I wouldn't recommend ever using it like the bottle, unless you really, honeslty use it for medicinal purposes. Cancer and AIDS patients use it all the time for temporary euphoria and relief. But they have life-and-death issues to deal with.
Weed rocks, but don't go down the "dark side" per se. Sometimes depression is a good thing, lets you know when you need to change things in your life. And you can't always do that when you smoke to be content.

Before I started smoking pot, I'd cut myself, hit myself in the face until I almost passed out, or on my body until there were bruises, I'd dig my nails into my skin to make myself bleed, I thought about suicide on a daily basis, I wanted nothing more than to kill every human being with my bare hands and then to look in a mirror as i blow my brains out...I was a FUCKED UP individual. When I smoked pot, I felt this inherent connection with the world and everyone around me. I felt like there was so much more to life than my hatred and animosity, if one would just take the time to stop and listen to the sound of the earth breathing through every creature and plant on this planet.
I was and still am awed at how cannabis completely changed my outlook on life. It doesn't just work when you're high, I think if you truly want to change or if you just begin to let it, cannabis works completely.

I read a study called Addictive Personalities And The Substances They Should Avoid (Mens Health SA, Jan. Issue).
I can't remember the article in detail but what I do remember was a paragraph that explained that a person with an addictive personality was more in danger of anti-depressants than other people because it can cause psychological dependence.
A test was given to a few subjects with an undiagnosed personality, i.e. the users did not know that they had addictive personalities. When the users were 'high', they suffered no depression but when the users came down, depression would increase beyond the normal levels, and remain high for a long period of time after that.
The article concluded that people with undiagnosed personalities could check to see if they had addictive personalites by answering some questions, like:
1. Have you ever used recreational drugs alone?
2. Have you ever used any drugs more than you had to?
3. Do you gamble? Do you find it hard to stop gambling?
4. Do you have a repetitive daily/weekly regime?
5. Do you find it hard to make new friends?
6. Would you describe all your friends' tastes and opinions as similar?
7. Do you get bored easily?
8. Do you enjoy hobbies which are NOT physical in nature?
9. Is it hard for you to 'break a habit'?
10. Do you smoke? (Cigarettes, obviously.)
11. Do you drink alcohol?
12. Would you describe your lifestyle as stressful?
13. Would you say you had a vivid imagination?
14. Do you lose track of things easily?
15. Do you forget things easily?
If you have answered YES to any of these questions, then you may have an addictive personality.

No. To everything, but, cigarettes. I could say no to alcohol, but, I wouldn't want to say, "no more". And, enjoying, reading pot forums, which is not physical in nature.

As already stated previously in this thread, don't cover up your depression using marijuana.
I've done this and learned the hard way.
The only way I've overcome depression is changing my lifestyle to fit my pyschological wants and needs.

I think if a highly successful businessman and a manic depressive were smoking the same weed, they'd get along fine.
