Wounding-Induced Trichome Production?

I was doing some googling on trichome production today and came across an nteresting read!

I thought if you guys might be interested in reading it..

I wonder how our ladies feel about this?

Wounding-Induced Trichome Production in Arabidopsis

Many plant species, including Arabidopsis, respond to insect damage by increasing the density of trichomes on new leaves. Gibberellin has already been shown to play a role in constitutive trichome production in Arabidopsis, and in this issue, Traw and Bergelson (pp. 1367â??1375) demonstrate that two plant defense-related chemicals, notably jasmonic acid and salicylic acid, also influence trichome production. The results are interesting because salicylic acid and jasmonic acid are known to play key roles in regulating the induction of other types of herbivore resistance. Herbivore damage and artificial wounding both cause rapid increases in jasmonic acid and, as the authors demonstrate, an increase in trichome production. The jar1â??1 mutant exhibited normal trichome induction following treatment with jasmonic acid, suggesting that adenylation of jasmonic acid is not necessary. Salicylic acid, which negatively regulates the jasmonate-dependent pathway in many plants including Arabidopsis, had a negative effect on trichome production and consistently reduced the effect of jasmonic acid, suggesting negative crosstalk between the jasmonate and salicylate-dependent defense pathways. Interestingly, the effect of salicylic acid persisted in the noninducible immunity mutant nim1â??1, suggesting that the Npr1/Nim1 gene, which encodes a nuclear protein that is necessary for downstream activity of the salicylate-dependent pathway in other systems, is not downstream of salicylic acid in the negative regulation of trichome production. Finally, they report that gibberellin and jasmonic acid had a synergistic effect on the induction of trichomes, suggesting important interactions between these two compounds.

interesting, jasmonic acid is C12/H18/O3, can't seem to find where/how to obtain it, salicylic acid is in acne medicine, and in facial scrubs (and don't forget asprin!). the salicylic acid "consistently downgrades" the effect of jasmonic acid(when plant is sprayed, I googled the compounds). Jasmonic acid is a growth inhibitor yet does increase trichome production, natural defense mechanism.
Basically, you shock the plant (cutting leaves, etc.) it produces jasmonic acid to heal itself, effectively stunting growth, but you should end up with more trics. Sounds usefull, I have a plant to spare for this, I have a hermie all alone (just polinated itself yesterday, damn.) I will "damage" some of the leaves (have already) since it doesn't have any visable trics yet on the 12 or so buds it has forming (on the leaves anyways) and see what happens.

Increased Trichome production does not simply equate to Increased THC production.

The plant will only produce the THC concentration that its genetics will allow.

I'm just interested in the trics here, not trying to increase THC. I will also be giving it a water, silver nitrate, and h2o2 working solution, mixed half/half with a full strength 10-59-10 fert solution for the rest of its days, minus flush of course.

I will do the trimming tonight, its first "cocktail" may be tonight too..

Here's the result of my trimming, I only trimmed the leaves in half. I also gave it 1/4 tsp silver nitrate (may help with the stress) 20ml peroxide and ended up using 20-30-20 fert in one gallon, then dilluted the gallon to half strength with 1 gallon more water (special ph5.5 water :D ) and watered it. We will see how it looks tomorrow...

No new trichome production yet, in fact this hermie is more female than male now, and seriously un-sticky. Good to know the silver nitrate wasn't too toxic(took 5 mixes to get the proper amount in the dilution without going under ph 4.5 ended up using just 3 flakes in a gallon) the silver nitrate will help with secondary growth and cause the plant to regenerate (much faster than normal) but will effect flowering, which is fine since I can't get in my proper flowering area for another 3 weeks or so(can't risk the pollination). I will check it again before I get too drunk tonight.

Nothing new to report, the hermie appears to be still growing sloowly bacause of the crap light I got on it, It is getting some rusty spots on one growth tip (Probably nitrogen def, but the growth is turning lime-green'ish too, only on two tips) but I'm not worried, It continuing to pollinate itself despite my best efforts to neuter it. It has NO trics at all yet, anywhere, I don't think the trimming stunted it in any way, since its still growing fine It is in week 5 of flowering. I wish my other 4 females would finnish so I can get this hermie under the HID's. My 4 females are in week 5 of flower and are kickin' butt with fat buds and 2 of them are bent to look like praying mantis. It is very easy to see the difference between flowering under HID's and cfls (except my females are getting 3x the lumens so maybe not a good comparison...)
I'll post a pic of the hermie tomorrow, so any changes appear more evident.

it has two affected shoots, new growth on them is lime-green and has yellow necrotic spots, I have flushed with small amount of lime; the plant should recover quickly because the lock-up was from the slightly acidic silver nitrate solution, It may lose the two affected areas, no problem. still 10 other buds on it :) I will again post pics tomorrow.

Still no Trics on this hermie. It's kinda droopy from the flush last night. second pic is the damage from the low ph and possibly manganese def (probably just the ph however)

I have 4 total in my main flowering area, first pic is the prettiest cola, second pic is of some sativa and is gonna take longer. The 3 indicas have 3 weeks left (or so), that sativa is way behind, may have to risk having it with the hermie once the others are cut.

Still alive, PH is back to normal, this plant has been beat-up bad, had to flush twice but once it dries out I'll be able to tell more, still hasn't started pumping out trics, starting to think this plant is doomed, should've killed it weeks ago, I'll post more pics in a day or two once it dries out a bit.

BTW it's halfway through week five of flowering :mad:

Sorry, this thread has ended, this sad hermie was cut to make room for six seedlings, the damage induced trichomes will be fully explored on this upcoming grow.
