clones in r'wool...dying due to heatstress? or,
I have always cloned hydro...this is my 1st attempt to clone using r'wool starters (1"x1"). I have had under a small cfl for 3 days. they appeared fine. Last night I decided to put them in a corner of my extra closet 4feet off to the side of a 250hps...I have never had a problem with clones or seedlings under this lamp...I went to the 'big room' for about 2-3 hours, when I came back the 'ol lady...
Had closed the door...This is how they look now.
If you are an experienced r'wool user and can help out, I appreciate it...
GK, i know you're out there...HELP!!! lw

forgot pix...duhhhh, and I am not stoned!!!
I am not sure how wet to keep them...
whether to use the dome, or not...
whether to kill the 'ol lady...guess I can't do that...
I am really smiling behind this frown.:(
Man I was so excited:dance: ...I was going to do a soil grow in 3g pots with about 60 clones...but now???
I was wondering??? Is it not; A good idea to put them in the sun?

Yo katewood.. I was in the car all day yesterday.. sorry..
Well..
this is what y ou need to do
1. fill the tray with about 1/2 inich of water.. Let the cubes drink from the bottom.. Don't water again until all the water is gone from the bottom of the tray.. You can even wait an additional day (after the tray is dry) then fill the tray again with 1/2 inch of water.
2. Put a dome on the trays... You need to keep the humidity inside..
take the dome off once in awhile... Everday for 10 minutes.. or every ither day for a couple hours..
this is to prevent mold growth..
love
: )
Of course the cubes should bever be dry....
I think you said earlier taht the best grow you ever had was starting seedling under a 1000 watt hps..
I would like to hear the details.. how far the light was from the plants... what medium you used.. how often and how much you watered? air flow?
: )

clones in r'wool...dying due to heatstress? or,
I never clone under 1000w...I have put clones under my 250hps in open closet. I usually use a single 48" fluoro or those 42-45w standard cfl...
I will post pik of portable little box I made for seedlings, clones.
light was...I just took pix...let me sort them out and I will post right back and answer all your Q's...as long as this tornado doesn't blow us away. lw

how far away...
1. overhead
2. approx. 4'...under 250hps
3. small fan dedicated to 250hps/there is also a 16" recirc fan in room
The temps in here are usually around 70-80f, but when the door got closed the other AM...temps blew up to 90+ and clones wilted. I removed them to an airy room and spritzed them...It looked like 9-10 might make...but, then yesterday AM...the same person that closed the door and killed them in the 1st place, took them without my knowledge, stuck them in the dark and they all died, as far as I can tell...who knows...
4. seedling box-day2
5. my C99xNL5
GK, I put my seedlings under 1000w horti- in my sneakpeek thread...they were clones, rooted for 2 weeks, then I vegged them 1 week-15/9 and flowered them 12/12 for 6-7 weeks...all under 1000w horti-
...As far as airflow; I have a 5000btu window unit you see in wall dedicated to lamps airspace...
and a 16" recirculating fan(too much) in all my rooms...
temps always kept between 70-80f...humidity varies 46-75 at times.
Did that answer your Q's? You know that in sneakpeek thread, you can see all this! thanks for the response.
I can't believe that with all these experts we have around here...no-one bothered to try and help with this query...and to think, everyday, I take time to help some poor soul. Oh well, I blame myself for trying a new method I am not familiar with, at a major cost to my perpetual grow!!! I lost 20 Northern Lights and 10 Misty blue clones here,,,BUMMER:(
I gotta go! lw

Well you should have never mentiooned tornados.. cuase that stole all the attention away from the thread.. cause I am about to produce a show for cable about Tornados.. I will be chasing tornados in tornado alley from May 16th to June 16th.. I am so excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DId you mention a dome? You need a dome and humidity.. and you dont need HPS or any HID for clones.. that requires a lot of care cause as you klnow those lights love to dry ROckwool out!!
tell me about tornados..
yummy
: )
ilove tornados

I make TV and Movies... just another GIG.. LOL
i love you...
10 miles? WOW..
can you hear it?
See it?
from that far away?
Somebody told me that 2pm is the start of tornado time.. true?
-
clones in r'wool...dying due to heatstress? or,
there is no set time, but 2pm is right at the beginning of pm thunderstorm time...
Need an assistant...lol

clones in r'wool...dying due to heatstress? or,
removed dead cuttings and replaced with a few new cuttings for 2nd try...I put just enough water to fill up the
pattern on bottom of propagation tray. I did not flood...
I sprayed top of inside of cover to add a little humidity.
I sprayed them with an anti-wilt spray...they look fine 24 hours in. tick tick tick tick...
A day into '2nd try' there is no humidity/moisture on cover.
should I add more water to tray?...I don't want to drown them.
Is it OK to have more water because the top of starter and stem is allowed to breath?...In all my readings, I cannot find a clear explanation for this process, beyond the standard how-to tutorial's.
Is it a bad idea to have fan blowing into cabinet?...I have a little fan to circulate air to cool 42w cfl.
Should I remove fan and allow cabinet to warm up?...thus creating humidity and higher temps?
any help would be appreciated. lw

clones in r'wool...dying due to heatstress? or,
what kind of water are you using? i use only distilled as tap water has never worked very well for clones.
keep water in the bottom of the tray at all times. it doesn't need to be flooded but there should always be a little.
keep them under the dome except for short breaks 1-2 times/day. if there's no moisture inside the dome it only means the air is also pretty dry. no prob as long as the cuttings are kept damp and in water. i spray a lot during the rooting...distilled water only. but i don't see how spraying the underside of the dome will help...
i keep a fan going at all times even if they're under the dome just to keep air circulating and helps with damp-off (my theory as it's rare here). and like i already said, i spray a lot...
i also only use flouro's until they're well rooted.
as far as temps, i keep it no lower than 70 and no higher than 90.
there will be some tweaking of the above due to damp-off and your ambient humidity vs mine (it's usually single digits here) but i get 80-85% of my cuttings through by faithfully following what's above...as shown to me by sly of bros grimm fame years ago. only diff now is i use jiffy cubes and we used grodan cubes then...same results it's just easier for me to go into the soil with the jiffy cubes.

1st off...thanks alot Del. I am surprised you don't know that I use and preach ROwater...So we are on same page there. I have added a couple drops of superthrive...
you basically described exactly what I got going now.
I would've been alright before, I'm pretty sure, had the 'ol lady not melted them!
I try to follow the same simple direction's whenever I do old school...anyway, thanks for the clarification. We are on course...:)
I just looked at them and they looked fine. But so did the last batch on day 3...LOL:smokin:
In reference to jiffy plugs...I use rapid rooters now...my seedlings love them. They also transplant effortlessly into hydro and soil/less mediums
thanks again, lw

Hey GK you should contact JimBones...he is chasing them right now. He has been a tornado chaser for many years. He has lots of flim on them as well.

here's a semi-current thread from marihemp with methods others use...and sanclem is sort of the resident pro over there.

WOW.. no shit... and he lives near me too..
Latewood..
FYI.. I have never used a fan on clones.
Never used anything but tap water...
I never spray clones with anything except wilt spray (I do this when I stick them in the rockwool)
I do keep water about 1/2 inch in the bottom of the tray and then let it dry out completely...(not the cubes) Then I refill the bottom of the tray again.. 1/2 inch...
I never water the cloneds directly.. just water the tray and let the cubes absorb the water..
My dome almost always has misture build.. up... like del said.. I also take the dome off to let the moisture out once in a while.
I have had mold once or wtwice grow on the clones.. I took the dome off and the mold went away!!

clones in r'wool...dying due to heatstress? or,
thanks all...GK, I am balancing around what you said...
I had the fan in the box due to 2 seedlings, but I can move them...I thought that the fan might be robbing the humidity and that is why dome has no moisture...I added more water as per your instruction's after checking and fnding rockwool on the dry side...thanks to both of you...
Del, I will check out the link, thanks...
crazy thing is...I have a very successful cloning program going, but have never used the rockwool. I hate not being proficient in all aspects of what we do...

clones in r'wool...dying due to heatstress? or,
here are 4 piks...
Look how good this one took...
and this one,
and this one too:D
this last one, gave me this thought:
I have made a determination, when it comes to trimming up cuttings...you can actually take TOO MUCH and they will wilt. I left more foliage on these clones and they rooted quicker...
I note this, because I used to have a really high success rate, and then I started really trimming cuttings to allow for root growth...well you have to have enough cutting to allow it to wilt and reveg itself...so leaving a little more leaf and having the process take longer is better than a 50% effort that rooted faster. Imho

planted the babies in 4" cups fill with
hyponex, soil
black velvet compost
and foxfarm large perlite.
spritzing 3-4x's a day with ph'd rowater* w/superthrive, *Swampwater is what I call my r'wool soaking water. It is ph'd with superthrive added. I soak my r'wool starters in a bucket filled w/3gallons. After I place seeds or cuttings in starters, I recycle the swampwater fro spritzing, etc.:smokin:

Why a 250 watt hps...?
wouldn't cfl's be cheaper?

still chasing..tornados..

clones in r'wool...dying due to heatstress? or,
not really...I already have 250 on my old pepper plants. and I just flowered a plant solo there...liked how it came out, but the 250 sure doesn't frost them up like 1000w horti-...
besides, I left a few under the cfl's in mt r'wool prop box and they are not keeping up eith the ones under my 250hps.
