I get like $300 from the fed's and state, and I imagine I'll save it for rent and whatever else I need. Probably gonna stash it so I can start a little grow though ;)

I don't get any money back this year as I owe them $1700 more for their screw-up, so for the next few years, they'll have my money. I mean, when the government sends you $1200 all at once in cheque, my first reaction was to spend it. I did, now I have to pay. Huh.
oh and if anyone here used H&R block or another intermediary service i would STRONGLY SUGGEST that you do your taxed by yourself, you can even do them online for FREE, more info at irs.gov, but i went to h and r block and they told me i owed $37 but then i did my taxes myself and found out i was getting back $193 and all of my friends found out they were getting refund even though H&R Block told them they owed like $2500 or $3000 i was so pissed because they are just ripping people off because they are fucking retarded and dont even know how to do their jobs. i had the manager come out and yell at the rep who was helping me because of it too (and apparently this was happening ALL over the country). So the only way to be sure is to DO IT YOURSELF!!!! it only takes like 30 min MAX!!!!!
well the most logical reason for H&R Block "ripping" people off is charging them a fee for preparing their tax info. I started out doing an online one, then they surprised me at the end by informing me that they would be taking 150$ as a fee for doing my taxes. So I quickly got a form and did it myself. It's fees, fees, all fees.
If you want all of your refund, do it yourself, otherwise you'll be giving most of your refund to the lovely people at H&R or whoever..
For most people who get most of their income from a job or two, the 1040 EZ form ...or one of the free (for people earning like under $50K) on-line tax prep services, as others have already pointed out, linked from the IRS website at http://www.irs.gov/ are sufficient...
For people earning much income from other sources, such as their own business, etc they'd likely do better to hire a CPA ... it's not cheap, but it's worthwhile in the longrun.
On a related subject ... the whole refund thing is a sad commentary about the tax system ... many people have been brainwashed to think they get money back ... as if the money is free or something (ok, sometimes it is, such as for those who qualify for the earned income credit, etc) ... generally, it's not free money, but rather is excess that people have paid in and now get back with no interest.
A better question to consider at tax time is how much tax did one pay ... and that includes social security; it's very likely young people who pay into SS today will see little to none of it; it's basically a tax.
Most have no idea how much they really pay ... and that's by design - the people who came up with the withholding scheme knew this; income tax was originally intended only for the very rich, not the typical wage earner ... people tended to accept the larger, ever-expanding scope of the income tax out of ignorance ... if everyone had to make quarterly lump payments, as some have to do, (monthly or even more frequent, such for small business owners), there would be a tax revolt in this country overnight.

I was one of the first people to get my tax returns in, and 2 weeks after all my friends got theirs I'm still waiting for mine:mad: . Doesn't the government know I need that money to buy a half?!

maybe i should clarify that i went in there and the lady was showing me how to do the taxes myself, she even gave me some 1040 forms so that i could do it myself.
and when i did it myself i found out that i was getting back 193 which was accepted by the irs and i got my refund today and spent it on my pipe.
so i dont know if its an isolated case but the fact that she didnt have a damned clue what the hell she was doing and that if i had filed with her company i would've paid around $100 after fee's, but instead i got back almost $100 and i filed for free online, at 10pm april 14th mind you.
and i think im gettin back 27 from state.
i only made 5366 total last year lol, i got paid like 3k or 4k under the wood tho
I'm not getting a goddamned thing but another 6 months to file. If I'm lucky I'll break even, but I reported zero estimated tax till I get all my shit together. I moved states so theres a W2 and a 1099 floating around I still can't get and moving/court expenses I have to figure out. Freakin hate taxes.
