cigarettes

my girlfriend smokes cigs, i dont. she has for a long while, im not sure how long. a couple times, especially when we first started dating, 11 months ago, she told me she had stopped, when really, she hadnt. then finally, she told me she stopped for good, and a couple months back, she told me that she had been smoking, on a pretty regular basis. this crushed me, but didnt do anything to hurt our relationship. since then, i asked her to slow down, and she has, but its been down to 1-3 cigarettes most days. i dont think she was ever a heavy smoker, but still. having said this, she respects my wishes, and has never smoked around me, and doesnt smoke if she is going to see me that day.

i just hate the fact that its hurting her, and we both know it, and theres nothing i can do about it. ive talked it over with her so many times, its crazy, but it doesnt work. i cant think of anything else to get her to stop. she says she's tried, but cant.

its just killing me that she keeps hurting herself, and i cant do anything about it. anyone got any advice?

just say you really want her to stop and then say 'do it for me' and if not start saying things like do it if you love me then say 'if you dont stop ill leave you' but dont really just say it an see if it works just say....

Please don't try to make her choose Cig's over you. I know what its like to be addicted to the fuckers, and when you REALLY want one you'll try to sneak one, even if this means you'll hurt those close to you. I suggest you get her that chewing gum stuff, and mybe make her put her Cig butts in a jar full of water, everytime she craves one, make her smell the jar, it'll throw her right off.

let her smoke if she wants to like set a 5 a day MAX or somthing then 2 weeks later a 3 a day MAX. The problem is worrying, humans have incredibal capabilities. Those include healing..

Ha, incredibal capabilities? yeah right, like what? war? murder? pollution? evil? rape? cancer?

I agree with you.I hate the smell of ashtrays and cant have one near me if I am not smoking so maybe I should use this to help me give up :thumbsup: :cool:

You have to decide if you want to be with a smoker cigs for the rest of your life. What if she can never quit? Are you planning to have children with her? Smoking cigs is a vasoconstrictor, mj is a vasodilator. Children whose mothers smoke have more respiratory problems and are born smaller. This is a life decision.

i dont know about that last statement... my family has been smoking for years and years.. my mom was smoking when i was born and my two other sisters.. none of us have asthma

maybe its more of a risk.. but i dont think its a fact that it will harm your child...

well, i talked to her today. before, i insisted that if she ever had kids, she stop, and she agreed to that. by the way, she wasnt a heavy smoker, somewhere between 1 and 3, most days. but, it'll be our one year anniversary, if you can call it that, on may 14, and she promised today that she'd stop then. pinky swore, even;) and no, i'm not gonna make her choose me or them. but thanks anyways for all your help guys.

on a slightly related note, her mum knows about it, and gives her cigarettes, or used to. anyone else think that this is irresponsible? i dunno, it might just be me, but how can you knowingly let your child hurt themselves like this?

Pichacho, I was in the exact same situation as your girlfriend with my ex, and the worst thing is at the start of the relationship he said, right, I love you but if I catch you taking any Class A's it's over.

I was fine with that at the start but then it turned to no weed.....then no alchohol during the week....it got to the point where if I lit up a fag in a bar or something, he would ignore me for the next half hour.

I'm sure you're not as extreme as he was, but for all his other great qualities and even tho his intentions were honest, those attempts to control me resulted in my leaving and breaking his heart...

If you're g/f was a smoker when you started going out then it's really not fair to expect her to change a part of her personality for you. You should love her regardless. Maybe if you compromise and ask her if she would consider giving up when/if she gets pregnant. She has the right to harm her body, but not your baby's.

All I'm saying is, just don't let it get to a 'me or the cigarettes' situation because you might not be happy with her choice....

It depends how old she is,if she is over the legal age to smoke then no not really and if her mum smokes she would be a hypocrite if she tried to get her daughter to quit.It is not very responsible to smoke while pregnant and this is something I really hate,giving up smoking is not hard when you have another life inside you.

She doesn't even smoke heavy and at the end of the day it is her own choice as to what she does with her body and she will suffer much more then anybody if she develops any smoking related illness.You can't help anybody until they are ready to be helped,that is just the way it is i'm afraid.I really hope she does quit because it is a disgusting habit and gives you the shittiest cough every bloody winter.

Yes. If she was pregnant she should'nt smoke, if she has even the smallest of will power she would'nt smoke while she is pregnant. But hey, you say she only smoke's 3 a day, could be alot worse. Im not even legal age to buy Cig's for 3 months yet and i smoke like 10 a day.

The novelty of doing things you shouldn't soon wears off and becomes very boring but it's too late sucker the tobacco company has you in their sweaty little hands and you are going to help pay for their next cruise around the world lol

I've been smoking for almost 2 years. The novelty wore off a long time ago. What? you think i smoke 10 a day for FUN? ha.

well, thanks for the advice everyone.

I don't think you should try to make someone give up there vices. Steph wanted me to stop smoking pot I fought her toothe and nail on it. And JustSayNo people like you annoy me. Something like kicking you in the face comes to mind.

Cigarettes are not only physically but mentally addictive, it is hard to quit when you know that one puff will end the suffering of withdrawl, it is acceptionally easy within the correct mind set. Personally, i would need somone to force it upon me.
