HOBO-TASTIC setup!

Yo yo yo. Here is some pics of a friend of a friend of a friend of mines setup. He lives where growing cannabis is legal. He was however just a n00b and wanted some guidance on his setup. He has never grown before, and decided hydro was for him for some reason. Well, here is what we gots...

A rubbermade with a fountain pump in it connected to the main rail you see that distributes water to each of the net pots. The pots are filled with grodan grow cubes.

He is using general hydroponics 3 part mix.

That sweet light you see is my friends contraption...There are (4) 30w Soft white compact flourescents (8,000 Lumens total) Under that "hood" with possible plans to add 2 more for a whopping 12,000 lumens. Wee! Yes the light normally sits about 1" from the setup.

The plants are some killer bagseed from some pretty dank shwag. I think they are about ohhhhhhhhhhh lets see about 10-12 days old at least. Hes got one that is dying out...I think that the transplant from verm/perlite to the rockwool cubes may have killed it. The directions said to only use plants propogated in growcubes or whatever, but fuck that. The rest seem to be going....or dying too who knows but the reaper.

Looks like you I mean your friend ;) has everything covered. Does he have a intake and exaust?

lights are high. For CFL they are way to far from the plants.

I assume he has grown in this before?

You may want to strengthen up the underside of the tub lid with a PVC stand. That will keep them from falling inward from weight when the Rubbermaid lid gives away.

have "him" at least pickup a 100 watt high pressure sodium outdoor light from home depot for $70. A larger wattage from a hydro store would be better. That's quite a few plants to be growing under CFL.

Yea I understand but I guess we all have to start somewhere. I expect that half of the plants will be male, so in reality it will be closer to 3 or 4 plants. After he gets a harvest or 2 he will indeed get a 400w light, blowers, co2 and the whole shebang. For now, do you think that it will work, at least OK?

Well, it will work, but you won't get alot of bud.

ok, how would you recomend that he improves the setup to get "alot of bud"

Plans dictate a 400w for the flower cycle hopefully.

yes more light would help a lot.. then you will need to make sure you have it vented properly... other than that it looks like you errrr I mean your Friend is off to a good start..:thumbsup:

thanks broseph, do you have any reccomendations on venting? You guys are A-OK in my book.

I would like to say...your friend could've left the roots in the v/p mix and put that into the rockwool medium you have there.

coat the bottom of netpot with the r'wool, place seedling/rooted clone in netpot and fill with your medium.
you might want to consider hydroton, instead(less ph problems) imho, lw

Hobo-Tastic has become a little less hobo and a little more tastic.

My friend has recieved a nice 400 HPS on loan and promptly converted it to remote ballast and hung it up.

Also, he has put in a temp gauge and humidity gauge.

He has been trying his best to control the ph with lemon juice and will be out to get some real ph down tommorow. after about 4 hours the ph goes from 6 to 8. What do you think he should strive for? 5.5? 6.5?

5.2 to 5.8 on the PH. They like that best. Make some white plastic covers for the netpots to keep the algea down. I see it starting in the big one. It can be a plastic bag just cut circles to go over them. Once you get a nat problem they can be hard to get rid of.

I know it looks like algae is growing but its not in real life. I hear ya on the netpot covers though. Whats a good material besides "plastic bags" cause he wants to make this a little less HOBO every day!

What recipe of General Hydroponics should he be using? Right now he is using 2 tspm micro, 2 tspn grow and 1 tspn bloom per gallon.

Any other suggestions, comments or recomendations?

The humidity is at 40-50% and the temps are at 86f.

buy panda plastic...black on one side white on the other.

Anything white and non flamable should do the trick. Get a fan on them to help the main cola. 3 grow 2 micro 1 bloom. I use a NICU bottle in ml. 10ml=1Tbsp but thats just me. Also the pet store sells CO2 tablets that work pretty good put a tiny bit of water in a tray with the tablet set on top of box and close the door.

I would advise using the 3-2-1 nute recipe; Only if you have plenty of room. Itried it, but no longer use 3-2-1, because it ate up all my extra space with useless lower foliage, and abnormal height. Actually, For those of you growing outside, I strongly recommend 3-2-1.

In side 1-1-1 is better, Imho, and for flower with height restriction's, i am becoming sold on the lucas formula, but I modified it, just a bit.

Instead of 0-5-10veg and 0-8-16flower, I add 1ml grow per gallon...so, 1-5-10veg and 1-8-15flower. This is just my crazy Chit'though. Goodluck lw

Anyway, how necesary is it to have an air stone going in the resevoir?

I think they are finaly taking off after being transplanted into the grow cubes

you always want to oxygenate your rez, regardless of what type system you have. the plant loves oxygen, needs it in abundance to thrive. So in answer to your question.
Yes, It is necessary for you to have an airstone, or 2, or 3-4 is good!:D in your rez. lw

how much longer until flower time do you rekon?

they will grow 2-3 times their in height, after you change photoperiods.;) If you are growing in that tub alone...I would flower soon,:) or they will overgrow each other, and your yield will suffer;:( In quality, and true quantity. I also feel you have more chance of 'Hermies' when you get the plants all inter-twined.

Since you are in the production cloner-type system, you will have a more friendly grow,:) if you allow each of the plants to have a little space to breath:D Seriously.:thumbsup: This also allows better light penetration. This is where I believe you make up your quality and yield.

He is weighing his pruning/cutting options at this point.

Most of the plants have 4 sets of true leaves, with the 5th popping out. They also have started sprouting branches at the nodes or whatever. The big one is on like the 6th or 7th set of leaves with full branches coming out. The whole closet is about 4'x2' and 6' 2" high.

Here they are after almost dying! One did in fact die, we have laid him to rest. There was/is some sort of super crazy stem tapering. Here are some pics of the one that died. You can see it looks like it got eaten up by a beaver but I can assure you that no beavers have been in the house. The plants that are doing better have no stem tapering, but the weaker plants have it like this one but not as bad. I think this plant just tapered all the way down until it just fell over dead. There is one more that may go this route but the rest have less to no tapering. Does any one know what this could be?

Should my foaf flower soon or what? He is concerned that the roots arent big enough yet to support good bud growth...What do you experts think about that? (roots on next post)

These are 2 pics of one of the bigger plants. Most of the plants have roots of similar sizes. Are these roots big enough for good bud growth or should the be vegged for another week? The plants are getting so big! Cant wait to see how many are females.

Here they are on day 3 I guess of 12/12 and a nute change to 2tsp/2tsp/2tsp per gallon of General Hydroponics. Amazing I know.

Those ladies look overwatered...get some more air in those tubs(dual outlet pumps are nice) and since you switched to flower put some more PK and lower your N

Yeah really you should cover them with black plastic,tape or sunthin'! I tried the clear poly tubing and it was a nightmare!!!!!!!!! The fungus gnats wre terrible! They get in your medium lay eggs and your all of a sudden have a gnat farm! They love dead rotting leaves that fall or have been trimmed and kept in the room in a bag or what not.Next time use the black poly tubing to to keep the algae from forming inside the tubes and and around the plants base!Just a little info for ya!
