Who's job is it, at an airport, to notice a crack in the windshield?
Is it the pilot's?
They just landed a plane because the pilot noticed the crack. Is it a failure of the groundcrew? Should they have noticed the crack?

I saw this thing on the History Channel yesterday about a plane that had a small crack in the side. Some lady spotted it when she was boarding the plane but didn't tell anybody. Then sometime into the flight about a third of the airplane's roof fell off, taking a flight attendant with it, and they had to make an emergency landing.

i would imagine it would be that of the maintence workers responsibility to notice such things, as that would fall under 'maintenence'... tho, i recently heard about a worker (either baggage handler or maintence worker) who hit the plane with some small vheicle (if it was a baggage handler it was that little cart they drive around, if it was maintence worker it was something else) not even that hard... and didn't tell anyone. later on that plane took flight and came down, and i think (not sure) pretty much everyone on it died...

A small crack in the windsheild might be pretty tough to see. Maintenence crews are going to be looking for big, obvious , things. They don't have time to go over everey thing with a fine tooth comb. Maybe the pilot just caught it in the right light.

i feel for the poor bastard that has to go over airforce 1 with a fine tooth comb.. cuz you know that plane aint leaving the ground as long as the president or someone of equal importance is in it, unless someone has went over that whole damn thing, looking for cracks or anything that could be potentially dangerous... i'm wiling to bet space shuttles about to go into space don't even get as much attention as airforce 1 does...

there's not much that could really happen to you... at most i would imgaine a public intoxication ticket.. so if you're asking cuz you wanna know if you can get stoned before going on your trip, go ahead... just be cool, dont' act stupid and you'll be fine.. it's not like boarding an airplane while high is some federal offense.. or even as dangerous as yelling out "i got a bomb" in the middle of the airport.

I've done it several times before. Once I actually smoked a joint right outside of the airport doors, where the pick up/drop off is. That was pre 9/11 though and security wasn't what it is now. Anyhow, it can be fun, at least at first. But then it just gets boring, especially on long trips. Some things even weed can't make much better.

bet you if they came around with a little cart, a personal disposable pipe and an 1/8 for everyone to smoke on while they're in flight, that'd make the flight better... i'm not sure what the consequences of smoking on a plane (as in health/danger concerns, not that you may get in trouble for it, like if airlines allowed smoking on the plane) would be tho...

yea, try to open that door to jump out... watch how many people grab you before you make two steps and pin you down to the ground... that is of course if they DON'T know you have a parachute... let them know you have the only parachute on the plane when it's about to go down... and you'll be like a kitten in the middle of a pit of 12 pit bulls trained to be killers that haven't ate in a week.... by the time they're done everyone will be holding on to a 1x1'' square of your body and the parachute fabric...

When there's 200 lives at stake I would certainly hope they go over the plane pretty godamn carefully.

yea but car wrecks are waaaaaaaaaaaaay less deadly.. i mean if you look at the statistic of car wrecks to death ratio, then look at the plane wreck to death ratio (even if you just look at a flight and say someone died so it counts as a death or no one died, so it wasn't deadly, that way you're not judging numbers because planes do carry alot more people then cars do) you'll see the plane death ratio is much higher, may be safer flying, but you have a better chance of surviving a wreck if you're on the ground

He's talking about dying, not wrecking. It is a lot safer to fly than it is to drive. However, dying in a plane crash would be just about the worst way to die, so I'll take my chances on the ground. I just got back from a vacation that had me on 5 flights, I won't ever fly again.

Think about it, a plane lands and takes off again in what, 60-90 minutes? Do you know how many people it would take to go over every square inch of the plane in that much time? It would look like a bunch of ants swarming over a piece of food that fell on the ground. I'm sure there is a list of things they check out every time and other things they check out at various intervals. Something like a crack in the windsheild must be pretty rare so they may get the full going over once every 500hrs of flying time or something like that. Just hope your not on the plane on the 499th hr :(

Ha, this all reminded me of one time I was in China and flew on a Chinese airline. I was in the window seat and when I looked up I saw that the plastic trim around the window was held on with duct tape. Sure it was just the trim and had no structural value but it made me wonder what else was duct taped together.

Most definitely did so with marijuana. Leaving Vancouver, returning to school with a friend after we had spent a week there. Got on the plane after having smoked for 4 straight hours (in a smoke bar) and having been high all week. I don't even remember packing, but maybe we had packed the night before.
In any case, it was AMAZING, although there were certainly several times when I was convinced that we'd get caught (the inherent pot-paranoia) because I was equally sure that everybody in the airport knew how high we were. It was a relatively short flight...we most definitely stayed baked the whole time, and had a ball talking about utter nonsense.
Not sure if I would've done the same without my friend there, though...if alone, probably just would've smoked enough to get semi-high, just to make the travel a little easier (as much as I fly, I hate it...we've become cattle!).

Just because I'm a nerd, I want to note that the chances of failure are equal for every period dx. So, there is an equal chance that there is a crack immediately after they check for one and immediately before.
The reason why checking still works, though, is actually because of chance...we're chancing that it's something like 1/1000 flight hours, so if we check every 500hrs we have a reasonable chance of catching a crack in action.

It IS the captain's responsibility to notice such things. When the plane lands, he has to walk around the aircraft and check everything.
And besides, a crack should be easy to notice. Primarily because it is straight ahead of you, and also flight deck windows are tiny.
They could even have hit a bird on take-off. But anyway it wouldn't cause any problems until you reach cruising speed and altitude, where the crack could enlarge, resulting in the window shattering causing the plane to depressurise sucking the pilots out! :D
I don't understand why people are so scared of flying. It is so easy. I have flown real planes, PC simulations and full size simulators.
