Growing with Sand??
has anyone entertained the idea of growing with sand as a medium?? doesn't absorb water, doesn't absorb nutrients.. the roots can move however they want throughout the sand, just lyk rockwool... ideas? comments? now wat about the colored sand they put in those animal shaped bottles!!! then u can get a black light and make ur grow look cool during the 6hr night :rasta:

You will still need oxygen. Not much oxygen in wet sand. You may have luck with peyote but I prefer promix. Try saw dust. Great for the R:S ratio of nitrogen to carbon. Under 20 to 1 promotes good growth.

the wood will absorb the water... so u think it wont retain the oxygen, eh??

Growing with Sand??
No I think it will retain oxygen

thats my fert. company the only one certified with the usda as 100% organic designed for nugs.
Anyway there is some research in there about sawdust as a organic medium for organic hydro and aero as thats what I make.

Growing with Sand??
Good luck with the sand experiment tell me how it works out. Plants with a high oil content grow best in sand. The olive tree 8000 years ago grew over the sahara dessert. The olive tree has twice the oils and half the water content of most trees due to the fact that it has the most complex calcium ion known to earth in its biochemical makeup. This calcium kills viruses that live off the vitamins found in the oil. Just some random knowledge. I wish you the best with the sand. I love growing sand in the warmer climates just not growing in it. NY love

Growing with Sand??
Well sand is alot of things. ethnogarden in canada has sand seeds from columbia if you would like to grow your own pebblets. There are 20 strains you can extract sand from. 18 are legal to grow in the US.

i hear sand is good to mix in with your organic soil mix, but sand alone, in a hydro setup would be kind of messy

Growing with Sand??
Howabout growing with Volcanite? This is high iron fine rock, almost like sand, and you can use up to fifty percent in your soil mix. I have some but haven't used it yet.

Growing with Sand??
I read a forum a couple days ago around here some where that talked about volcanite. I do not think it can be crushed up superfine as it would not have air pockets and the roots may need more oxygen but I here it is good to use in hydroponic apps. I can not say I have tried it my self except to put on the bottom of soil pots to promote drainage. It made them a bit heavy so I stop using them. Just an experiment.

Growing with Sand??
Yeah it's heavy but that's probably because it's been crushed up pretty well.
-
Growing with Sand??
Hmm, I have never heard of using really crushed up stone, but there are a couple threads on this site that mention using lava rock which is the same as volcanite for a hydro medium in bigger chuncks where it still is porous enough to store air in the pockets.
